Gotta imagine that'll be dropped to 1 game on appeal.

That's not to say I don't think he deserves 2 games. The guy refuses to play by the rules and he's continuously going out of his way to hurt people.

This. He's a repeat offender. He's just coming off a fine for doing the exact same thing, twice in one game.

I'm a Washington Potatoes fan and I wish the team would cut him: it's not like they have anything to lose this season. Some people just don't get it and will never learn, and I think he's one of  those.

As much as I hate the direction the Pats have gone in the past few years, at least they got rid of him before he could do too much damage.

He was a sorry bastard leading with his helmet. No sympathy.

This is why the NFL will always be a joke, and why I stopped watching after they banned edged weapons.  Don't give me the crap that you can still use blunt objects.  It's not the same.

2013-10-21 09:37:58 PM
Illegal contact to head and neck area? You mean he was actually taking scalps during the game? I didn't think Redskins did that stuff anymore.

2013-10-21 10:07:01 PM
Polamalu is next.

2013-10-21 10:14:25 PM
The Redskins board I read had a thread about him yesterday after the game and it was 80% "What an idiot", 20% "OMG football is so sissified now.  Remember Ronnie Lott?", which is pretty much what I'd expect from most football boards.

I'm firmly in the 'idiot' camp.  He earned this suspension.

\ As if the secondary needed any more impairment heading into Denver
\\ Still as a Redskins fan in Chicago, I'm pretty happy today.

You'd think the league would praise this fellow who consistently uses his head

At least Polamalu is actually really good (or at least was, I don't know if he's since lost a step...or three).

Meriweather sucks. Completely. He has no innate understanding of the geometry involved with lining up at the right depth and taking proper routes to tackle ball-carriers. He's completely incapable of recognizing personnel, formations, and making any in-game adjustments on his own accord. He doesn't have an iota of appreciation and nuance for his position. The only thing he can do is constantly launch himself like a missile at any moving object that comes across his path, without any care or attention paid whatsoever, and all the while displaying poor technique and absolutely no regard for the health and safety of everyone involved, including himself.

He's a pretty good athlete, I'll give him that. Outside of his size and raw athleticism, not a single positive attribute applicable to football exists. Why he is still in the NFL today is a bigger enigma to me than farking Stonehenge.

Polamalu leads with his shoulder, Merriweather leads with his helmet. There's a difference.

And His Hairness was a tenth of a second too fast on a field goal Sunday - otherwise he makes another play they're showing on ESPN for decades.

Yes and then he knocked himself out taking a head shot at one of the Packer receivers. I forget who.

2013-10-22 07:36:08 AM
I've watched closely, and players are modifying their tackling techniques.  They are tucking their elbow's really tightly against their ribs, and then they go in about 1 1/2 feet lower than the ball carriers' heads, with helmet crowns forward, hitting offensive player in the upper chest.  It looks like this can work, and keep the intensity of the game up where people like it.  You skeptics have to admit that, hey, a cheap shot's a cheap shot. Nothing fair about headhunting.  Something, something, cranial nerves, cervical vertebrae, quadraplegia, death, etc., etc......

2013-10-22 07:44:01 AM
Next offense should be a year suspension.

His murderer's trial got underway yesterday.  Only took 6 years, but it is hard to build a case when someone immediatley confesses they did it.

/Or something.

The one player on the team who can tackle gets fined and suspended for tackling.  And people wonder why the Redskins defense sucks.  Pretty soon and we'll have this.

I know, right?! This is so stupid. There is no reason why guys shouldn't be able to tackle with the crown of their chainsaw. Maybe go low with a pike or something. Nothing wrong with literally spearing a guy!

The people that whine that flag football is a bad thing have never played flag football with actual football players.

2013-10-22 08:30:50 AM
I blame the World Wide Leader.

Going for the "big hit" instead of the big tackle. How many times has Meriweather been flagged when he's actually wrapping up on a receiver? You don't make SportsCenter making a big tackle. You do get Lots of "Ohhs and aaaahs" and "he blew him up"s with a big (and sometimes illegal) hit.

It's only a matter of time until the NFL stops allowing replays of such penalty flagged plays. Just like the streakers or other knuckleheads that run onto the field. Stop showing them and the rate of incident will go down.

Well, that and actually teaching tackling fundamentals . . .

That's a fair evaluation, but it really doesn't apply to this case of a player who is deliberately doing things wrong.

Be fair, he might not be doing it deliberately.  It's quite possible that Meriweather is just very, very stupid.

Yeah, it's a little different when you're lining up a 190-210 lb receiver who's eyes are concentrating on making a catch than doing the same with a 240 lb running back with a full head of steam that sees you coming and lowers his shoulder into your oncoming head.

Just have him do the Gus Frerrote Cement Wall Tackling Technique over and over until he can count to potato.  Problem solved.

Naturally, former teammate and current Bears hater has to get in the spotlight by defending him, and saying he's not a dirty player.

2013-10-22 11:00:12 AM
He went for a 3rd spear tackle on McCown (Bears backup QB) last Sunday too, McCown went for a slide and Meriweather came in full speed with his arms tucked and head forward, like a torpedo, aiming for the head. McCown sort of limbo-d under him during the slide and Meriweather just flew inches over the top but it was pretty clear what he was going for.

The good news is that we can always spot "blind allegance to my team" type typing. Now I will not be suprised when you defend a dirty player for being dirty in the future (as long as he is wearing YOUR jersey of course).

He's playing football. The way it should be played. The way it always was until a just a few years ago when a potential massive lawsuit forced the NFL to start pretending to care about safety. These rules are ludicrous. Just about any really hard hit is flagged now, whether they use their helmet or not. it's a collision sport.. And now people have a problem when defenders tackle low. as well. Almost time for flag football.
