See? We buy them books and send them to school, and this is what happens. This is precisely why you use the correct firearm and caliber and cartridge build for the job. One size doesn't fit all with firearms.

Sheesh.

I would guess the ex-wives, or other family would get the kids.  Definitely an American tragedy, young man with two failed marriages, dies over an argument and leaves three kids with no good problem solving examples.

I love how the stock photo they picked was an FN Five-seveN. Article doesn't say, but I'm guessing the gun involved was more likely something like a .44 or .45, those like to pass through walls and keep going. It'd take a pretty good size hunk of jacketed lead to pass clean through a human skull, an exterior wall, (apparently) two cars, and then go all the way through one of the woman's legs and nearly bury itself in the other one. At handgun velocities, anyway.

Anywho, if you're going to kill yourself with a handgun, do us all a favor and use hollowpoint bullets.

especially with the bullets pictured... the blue tips are made to fragment after penetration. I have some steel core for mine that would go through but I wouldn't shoot myself with one simply because they're about 50 cents apiece.

Wouldn't it be better to aim farther back, just above the throat? I'd imagine the brainstem should be your intended target.

Budd had a massive gun, but seeing the blood pour out of his nostrils I think he had to have been feeling that for a couple of eternal seconds.

I vaguely remember something about Civil War era bullet injuries leading to infections (and death due to lack of antibiotics), largely due to bacteria and such on the victim's skin being carried to the interior of the body from the projectile, but recent bullet injuries don't present similar risks because the bullet travels too fast/ is too hot/ both?

If you actually want a story to hit the main page don't think too hard about the headline and just stick to the "not news... Fark" or the A) B) C) headlines that stopped being funny literally 10 years ago.

My list of greenlight headlines are so much not funnier than my list of redlights. Probably why I don't bother submitting a lot of good stories and spend more time on reddit these days.

If people get knocked out from a punch, I think the hydrostatic shock of a bullet like that guarantees you feel nothing.  I'm even underexaggerating here, because I'm pretty sure that most of your brain gets scrambled instantly.

The round used by the Fiven-seveN was designed to defeat light body armor.

The worst thing during that era was the doctors/surgeons digging for the bullet and thereby introducing germs into the body which caused infections which lead to death.  It's what killed President James Garfield; if they'd just left him alone, his wound would have likely healed, but they kept sticking their fingers into the hole, trying to find the bullet.

These days, I'd imagine that we put gunshot wound victims on a load of antibiotics, which kill off anything introduced into their systems by the bullet or during surgery.

Thankfully I've never experienced gun violence firsthand. The closest I've come is when a couple of kids pulled what may or may not have been a real gun on me last November, then knocked me to the ground and beat me with it when I refused to hand over the 5 bucks in my wallet. That doesn't really count.

But my wife was unfortunate enough to witness a crazy neighbor lady give herself a temple shot with a 9mm when she was 12 years old. According to her Paula babbled incoherently for an hour before the paramedics arrived, and only died a couple hours later after reaching the hospital.

Now I love and trust my wife, but I know her as an adult. I wouldn't trust the 12 year old version of her. The gun may have only been a .22, and it may have only been 15 or even only 5 minutes she witnessed a gunshot victim verbalize. Trauma can damage memories. But still, modern medicine is full of amazing brain trauma survivors.

I wouldn't place too much faith in hydrostatic shock. A lot of people put guns to their heads and fire expecting the lights to go out instantly. Some last days afterwards, some hours, some seconds. No matter how long, I think what they experience subjectively is a lot more than they bargained for.
