Worst-kept secret in higher education: GW makes a shiat-ton of money from nouveau riche in the middle east, Russia, China, etc. who want to get their kids 'prestigious' American college degrees.  There are shiatty dorms in Foggy Bottom with multiple $90,000 cars parked outside. Their marketing effort to that demographic is impressive.

/stayed there for a summer program once
//their dorms really are shiatty

So a liberal university is nothing but a lying piece of shiat just like the rest of the liberal establishment, you could knock me over with a wrecking ball.

Yeah, if you wanted a good job in the DoJ for the better part of a decade you needed a degree from a REAL university like Regents.

Thank you.  I'm amazed that only 6.5% of GWU students qualify for Pell Grants.  Is this where all the wealthy kids that can't get into one of the Ivies end up?

I work about a block from GWU. It's not expensive because it's good school, it's expensive because it occupies a large tract of prime real estate less than 5 minutes' walk from the White House in the heart of downtown DC. Take that same school and stick in the hills a couple hours west of town and it's on a par with Hampden-Sydney or Bucknell.

They only get cachet because of the name and location, not because they're worth a damn.

Nothing, other than the fact that it's not very well known and isn't routinely mistaken by the ignorant for being one of the academic titans of the east coast. It's a solid if obscure regional school. GWU should be the same thing, on the basis of its academics.

Pretty much.  That's my alma mater, and almost everyone there in the early 90's was wealthy and from the NE but just not quite bright enough to get into one of the big schools.  I, however, was one of the poors with a full scholarship, which amazed some of my classmates, because poor people are stupid.  My freshman year I lived with an obnoxious rabbi's son and when I went to a job interview right after I moved in, he asked, "You have to work?" like I had cancer or something.

If I had to do it all over again I would have gone to Northwestern.

So, real question here...are any of these full-priced smaller schools any better than Big 10 schools, or even capable regional places like Iowa State or UW-LaCrosse?

As an alum who needed a lot of financial aid back in the 90s I'm not surprised one bit.

My father was a Northwestern alum, I chose Wisconsin.  My father was old school; I had to pay for my tuition myself "because it will mean more to you."  He was right, of course.  Then again, my annual in-state tuition was about $3k, and Pell Grants paid $500 a semester.  Even working PT at $8 per hour (FT during the summer) I was able to pay tuition easily.  Kids these days are screwed.

GW isn't small.

But in re: the small schools, it depends a lot more on your learning style, how you want to socialize and relate to your fellow students, and whether you take advantage of the non-classroom opportunities.  You can be president of your professional society student chapter at Michigan or at Otterbein.  Etc.

So what's wrong with businesses acting in their best interest?  Universities are job creators too.

/snark aside, GW doing this is pretty shiatty.

So how is the student demographic wealth ratio any different than Harvard or Yale?

Probably higher - they actively recruit students from the Middle East who are part of wealthy oil families.
