Batter it, put it on a stick and deep fry it. It'll sell, at least at state fairs.

Okay, three things:

A) Is this really a step-by-step, picture accompanied set of instructions on how to smear bread with mayo and slice bananas?  Really?!

2) Could be good, especially with the sweeter mayo.

iii) Your blog sucks, subby.

In Washington we call that a Royale with mayo....

Never will beat a nice mustard and marshmallow on rye.

I came across a recipe for peanut butter sandwiches, circa 1917, that included lettuce and mayo. People have been making odd choices for things to put between two slices of bread since the invention of the bread knife.

I had one I called the "Thanksgiving" using potato bread, sliced turkey, and squeezable cranberry jelly. Put that in the Foreman grill or panini press.  Salt and pepper to taste. I haven't done it in a long time because I got bread out of my diet, so I don't know if you can still get squeezable cranberry jelly. I guess you could use some other berry jelly.

Um, this sandwich can be found all over the Southern US.

I often find that when I put a banana in a roast beef sandwich, the roast beef ends up being filled with mayo.

My mom used to send us to school with those.  It's actually pretty tasty. It wasn't until thirty years later that I realized why eating Thai food reminded me of eating in the school cafeteria.

Very true. A friend of mine loves it and convinced me to give it a go. It's pretty good. Nothing I'd eat regularly, but good.

I grew up eating them because my dad was a big fan. I went to a tiny liberal arts college in New England and everyone in the dining hall thought I was a terrorist when they saw what I was making. I couldn't even convince any of my friends to try one. It's clearly not culturally acceptable outside of the south.

Their loss.

Yeah, I've been eating them since I was a kid. And no, you don't need to use the sweete mayos.

What can't you put in a sandwich?

1. Large amounts of liquids. Though you can do things like add a small amount of wine as long as it doesn't make the bread too mushy and fall apart.

2. Live insects - unless you include a sauce that is viscous enough to keep them trapped.

3. Things hard to bite through. Beef jerky sticks in a sandwich will normally pull out when you try to take a bite. Then again you can roll your jerky up in a piece of bread and call that a sandwich.

Yeah, but they eat pig guts down there too. I mean fried right out of the bucket, not ground up in their scrapple like normal people.

I grew up poor so pretty much anything could be made into a sandwich. Tomato and mayo sandwich, cucumber and mayo or when there was nothing else just plain mayo. Banana and mayo was a treat and is pretty damn good eatin.

Yep, it's the standard banana sandwich around here in GA.  Don't put anything else on it though.  The sweet and the salty go well together.  Sometimes Peanut Butter instead of Mayo.

I grew up eating dill pickle and peanut butter sandwiches.  Yummy.  Got some of my Japanese coworkers to try it with Meh~Not Bad reactions.

I remember making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich in the dorm kitchen and some Japanese exchange students thought I was crazy to eat something so sweet.  Turns out peanut butter is not terribly common in Japan but "peanuts cream" (a super sweet honey butter like spread) is eaten occasionally.  I try opening their horizons with salty peanut butter but most are unwilling.

Corn and canned tuna mayo pizza?  Oishii!!
Rotten bean slime?  Umai!
Deep fried chicken cartilage?  Oooh, with mayo please!
A slimy goop made of fermented squid guts and salt? Oh god yes! And a whiskey chaser, thanks.

A salty paste of ground peanuts?  Um...no thanks.  Can I get a second cup of bean slime?

we grew up on peanut butter, bananas, and mayo sandwiches.

for variety  use apple, pickles , or pears in place of the bananas

// grew up all over the world, first remember eating those in southern Alabama
// still make peanut butter and X  for lunch once a month or so.
// 50+ years later and they still taste good.

Mayo and Banana?  No.

PB and Banana?  Oh hell yes.

My Mother-in-law got a letter from her son's teacher asking her to quit sending peanut butter and raw onion sandwiches to school.

/As a kid I ate mayo and raw onion sandwiches w/ a little salt and black pepper. I sometimes quartered a banana and popped it in, but usually saved it for dessert.
//Hellmann's Mayo is for sandwiches, Miracle Whip is for... salad (deviled eggs, but only if you add a shot of 10 day pickle juice - nectar of the Gods).
///I've tried a few other mayo's - Duke's comes to mind - but always return to what I grew up on: Hellmann's.

Same here, grew up in North Alabama.  My mom would coarsely mash the banana and add peanut butter and mayo to make a spread then make sandwiches with it.  Good stuff.

Stereotype much? or do you just reserve your bigotry for one region of the country?
