Lsherm: She said later in the video you can see her husband refer to her and turn in the wrong direction, which demonstrates he didn't know where she was standing behind him.

Called it in the other thread.

I did a search for it and finally found it. Man, that thread is really filled with partisan douchenozzles, isn't it?

I was going use it to go farkie teh stoopids, but now I'm afraid I'll crash the fark servers if I tried to favorite that many people all at once.

I am absolutely positive all of those people will pop in here to apologize for making fun of the handicapped....

I blame gawker.  They made the gif, didn't point out he was blind, and no one watched the full video where it was a little easier to tell the man didn't have any idea who was standing behind him.

I don't have much experience with blind people, but I made an extreme faux pas once on the DC metro system because a blind woman with a guide dog was walking in front of me to the elevator to get down to the platform.  I know those dogs are trained well, but there was a small patch of decorative garden next to the sidewalk and the dog went absolutely apeshiat when he got next to it.  The woman had to stop walking to get the dog back on the job.  Once she got on the elevator, I remarked "he must have smelled something really strong in that garden bed" and the woman went absolutely ballistic.  "WHO THE FARK ARE YOU?  HOW WOULD YOU FEEL IF SOMEONE TALKED ABOUT YOU DOING YOUR JOB?  HE WAS JUST CHECKING OUT A POTENTIAL THREAT.  THAT'S HOW HE WORKS!  HOW FARKING STUPID ARE YOU?"

It was me, her, and about 5 other people in the elevator, and I realized much later that she didn't have any idea why the dog stopped for a detour.  She had no idea there was a garden there.  She had no idea who I was, nor did she have any idea I had been walking behind her for a full five minutes.  Everything I took in while watching her and the dog was something she was incapable of gathering. As far as she was concerned, I was a random threat on an elevator to the subway system talking shiat about her best friend.

So I'll give this guy a larger than benefit of the doubt, especially since he gestured to his wife in the wrong direction later in his speech.  Maybe Gawker can make a gif of that and make fun of him.  It seems to be what they live for.

Lonegan, who is legally blind, believed that he was being ushered by an aide to maneuver him closer to the podium.

That may be so, but he's still a douche.

It does if you're blind and you don't need help at that particular moment from an aide.

Jesus, you people will will go to any length to crap on a handicapped person, won't you?  Maybe we can find a vet in a wheelchair you can piss on tonight.  It might make you feel better about yourself.

I would give him the benefit of the doubt, but he earned the douchebag title all by himself, well before the concession speech.

You'd think even a blind man would recognize his wife's touch, perhaps her smell.

2013-10-20 04:00:18 AM
I didn't post in that other thread, but the thought kept running through my mind why she would want to stay married to him if he treated her like that in public (not knowing he was legally blind - thanks Gawker). I guess that helps explain things, or at least provide some perspective.

That said, I'm still glad he lost that race. It's not like his campaign was based on socialized programs for the disabled. His number one campaign issue listed on his website was being against Obamacare.

I once was lost but now am found.  Was blind but now I -- hey get your fat fingers off me you stupid harpie.

*snert*

Blind douche.

Not to that extreme, no.

My sense of smell is all but nonexistent, but I understand that for normal people, recognizing people by smell isn't unusual.

I don't think being legally blind makes you say all the misguided words that came out of his mouth.

2013-10-20 04:27:44 AM
I didn't know the guy is blind. I just put it down to him being grumpy about losing the election or not wanting to be distracted while making his speech.

It did seem a bit odd but it's not like he turned around and punched her in the face or something.

2013-10-20 05:39:22 AM
If he's legally blind, shouldn't he be in sports officiating instead of politics?

2013-10-20 06:01:24 AM
Well that was awkward.
I did not comment on the story but would likely have said something inappropriate with this new information on context.
But if he would have won...."the blind leading the blind"  oh that would have been regularly used.

Yeah, that level of dickishness would be like questioning somebody's birth certificate after both long and short forms were released.  Like calling him a member of Religion X after he says that he believes in Religion Y.  Like using phrases like "don't re-n*g".

Oh wait no it wouldn't, because the people who thought this guy deliberately brushed away his wife's hand had no legitimate reason not to know that he wasn't deliberately brushing away his wife's hand.

/didn't comment personally because it didn't seem like much of a story to me

Hmm she still sounds like an asshole.  But maybe she just had a bad day, from walking around blind with a poorly-trained guide dog.

He's not blind, he's "legally blind". My brother is legally blind too -- that means his myopia is so severe that he can't do normal things by sight without corrective lenses. But, he sees just fine with corrective lenses. Lonegan is wearing think glasses, so he can probably see reasonably well right what's in front of him. Unlike contacts lenses though, the glasses won't give him any improvement in peripheral vision.

So, yeah, he probably didn't know it was his wife touching him. He probably thought it was a staffer.

So what? It was still a cold thing to do. And again so what? Not everyone loves to be touched. He was probably upset, and some people don't like to be touched when they are upset. Big deal.

It sounds like there are plenty of other reasons to think he's a jerk, not the least of which is his membership in the GOP.

Yeah, I get the feeling I would have jumped the gun and called him an ass if I said anything, but I don't think I posted in there because stopping people from touching you while your emotions are spiking sounds like it could be an automatic, uncontrolled response. I don't know.

Still, who was the original source who wrote the story and didn't do their homework? Smack their hands with a ruler as punishment.

/preferably smack them with a particularly fat ruler, like a certain old US President
//that was terrible; I'll show myself the door

Doesn't he's not a douche. Just not to his wife. At that particular moment.

Meet Steve:

2013-10-20 08:40:18 AM
But she was stroking his back for 20-30 seconds according to what I read, why would he think that was a staffer trying to guide him? If you guide someone you wouldn't be stroking him, that's trying to give assurance.

He might have thought it was a staffer and not his wife but still, bit of a douche bag move and I also fail to understand what his handicap has got to do with this, from what I see in the video she was pretty much behind him so even if he had peripheral vision he would not have seen who it was.

And dude that met the lady with a dog, yeah she was a douche too, reacting like that to such an innocent question...

2013-10-20 08:41:38 AM

So the argument now is that he was being a gaping smelly asshole, but he wasn't aware that he was specifically being a gaping smelly asshole to his wife, and so  Romney gets to serve as VP to Sarah Palin while this douche goes to the Senate and Obama has to spend eternity giving Rush Limbaugh hot oil massages?

Also,

There's only one party that routinely shiats on veterans, and it isn't the Democrats.  Once again, a Republican pulls them into an unrelated conversation, which just goes to show that you guys aren't interested in them at all unless you can use them as human shields.

Hmmm, something about "blind leading the blinder"

2013-10-20 09:02:31 AM
This is such transparent bullshiat. First off, does the motherfarker normally get gentle back caresses from aides? Secondly, even though I see better than this douche, doesn't mean I can see behind my back either. Lame excuse is lame.

riverwalk barfly: My SO is legally blind.   With corrective lenses, etc. she's good.   Legally blind doesn't mean you can't see.  The guy was being a cock because he lost an election.

According to most definitions, legal blindness is either when you have a reduction in the field of vision (such as tunnel vision) or your corrected vision is worse than 20/200. You can't have good acuity after correction and be legally blind unless your field of vision is screwed up.

Some quick googling shows that Lonegan suffers from this:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Retinitis_pigmentosa  so he's not faking the blindness, for fark's sake. Had a friend in college with this - handed him a kitten once, and he thought it was a gerbil. He had a very small amount of his vision left in the very center of his visual field. He also had a tendency to make exaggerated gestures sometimes, so when I saw this article it immediately rang true to me.
