(Adweek)   "I'm concerned about the blueberries" billboard on I-69 puzzles Michiganders. Some say it's a drug reference. Others think it's about school funding, bees, the ACA, or a Banksy thing. And quite a few think it has something to do with blueberries   (adweek.com ) divider line

2013-10-19 05:42:19 PM
The goal was essentially to make people see the world from the perspective of others. While vacationing in Alaska, Shaltz met a young tour guide who, when asked how things were going, said, "I'm concerned about the blueberries." Specifically, he was worried there wouldn't be enough rain for the state's blueberry crop.
At first, Shaltz felt like the 21-year-old was naive to be worried about such a specific issue, but he began to respect the young man's perspective and found himself wishing that others could be motivated to think about what's concerning the people around us. "We all go through the day and we see people who have blueberries-their own issues-and we don't do anything. Even when it's not about rain, when it's something we can impact, we show just how desensitized we've become. We aren't as helpful to the common man in even the small things in life."

I'm actually kind of okay with this.  I guess.  I assume he's got an agenda or something he's pushing.  But if I'm wrong, um, okay.  Better than a regular billboard I suppose.

I thought it was about the large blueberry farm using child labor they busted in Michigan a few years ago.  Which oddly enough came up in conversation a few days at work.

http://abcnews.go.com/Blotter/young-children-working-blueberry-field s- walmart-severs-ties/story?id=8951044&singlePage=true

So I'm waiting on my Michigan Blueberry Trifecta, I guess.

Seriously, can we talk about *those* blueberries?  Because it's pretty f--ked up that that f--king happened.  They had a six year old picking blueberries sold to Walmart and Kroger. Even if it's busted now, Jesus.

But I guess more farm inspectors = socialism, even though the number of field inspectors has grown under Snyder as far as I know... and the comments under that story that we're stifling work ethic are depressing as all hell.  Working on your parents farm != working with your seasonal labor parents on somebody else's farm.

I kind of like it. It's an ad that makes you wonder what its about, and when you make the manual action of looking it up, it has a nice message behind it.
The key is making the person look for what it means, I think. Takes a passive "help thy neighbor" message (in the general, not necessarily religious sense) which people would tune out as they pass by, and turns it into an active action of going and trying to figure it out or look it up. Not sure, but I think it might have a greater impact than a generic PSA ad, especially as knowledge of what it means starts to spread, and people like to feel in the loop. All in all, nice message, help thy neighbor, and an interesting way to get people thinking about it.

Michiganders?

"Michigander" was a derogatory term originated by Republican Abraham Lincoln to describe the Democratic presidential candidate (Senator Lewis Cass, from Michigan) in a speech on Senator Cass's view on the doctrine of popular sovereignty.  "...Goose-like candidate".  Most people from Michigan call themselves Michiganians.  The present governor started using the term when he came into office (all the previous governors never used the term except in jest).   It is being popularized by the Detroit Free Press, but the Detroit News still uses the term, "Michiganians".

Not so excited to be from Detroit, but proud to be a Michiganian.

I've always had a fantasy that if I were ridiculously wealthy to the point where money was no object, I would put up ridiculous billboards and run nationwide commercials with no point, solely for my own amusement. I suppose in retrospect it would be like advertising a tweet: "The good thing about an electric toothbrush is that when it's out of batteries, it's still a toothbrush," text overlaid on the picture of sleeping puppies.
