U.S. military officials say removing the roughly 51,000 troops currently deployed in Afghanistan by the end of 2014 will be a major logistical challenge.

Translation: We'll be leaving billions of dollars in equipment there. Just like Iraq and Vietnam.

I love logistics.

So Romania caved to the US on another issue. First the missile shield and now an air base.

Leave it in Kyrgyzstan or move it to Romania to have it stolen, your choice.

Umm....call UPS?

And why not send 2 girls, a guy, and their librarian to Romania to deal with it? A hell of a lot cheaper

Someday there will be no reason to worry about posting troops anywhere or having a missile defense system someplace or having to ignore ongoing ob-horrid govt. waste because of logistics because we will all be living in peace and sharing all we have with each other not having the fear of possible communist plots to take over our precious democracy or the threat of some as yet unknown worry from some as yet unknown group because peace will be the word of the day.

Humans will be gone from the planet of course but that is just gravy.

When I hear about Romania I always think about how in some European countries the Romas are hated even more than racists hate blacks in America. I understood that in a central and eastern European countries they really discriminate against Romanians.

Send Reb Brown instead, he'll kill Werewolves there... or Vampires, whatever they are!

Interesting. There already is an American base at this airport, so it's more of an expansion. (Arrived at this airport (civilian part, of course) when I went on holiday in Romania. Very small, a bit run down. Even the x-ray-scanners weren't bolted to the floor, they just wheeled them in place when needed.)

Roma != Romanians. Roma are gypsies, not even well liked in Romania. Not to say that Romanians (who really are named after the Roman Empire, unlike the Roma) are really loved by everybody, but the hatred against the Roma is not on a comparable level.

I know what the exact quote is, but the article doesn't involve the no longer extant Czechoslovakia.

We had to retire the cargo canoes when the birch bark got moldy. We have a plane now with propellers and everything!

This is the big advantage the US has over other countries,  we have an unlimited budget for making logistics shifts.
And the free training for the Romanian F-16 pilots sweetens the deal also.

Definite advantage to having no debt limits.

Indirectly. It uses natural gas produced by moose.

In both cases to keep them safe from Hitler, who helped the Iron Guard get rid of their country's Jews.
And I've read they hit peak oil in 1976 and have little left. The USSR was a thirsty biatch.
