Peter von Nostrand: College football has been pretty forgettable this year. This week doesn't look like it will reverse that

Last week was fantastic!  Unbeaten  Stanford, Michigan and Oklahoma all lost.  Georgia had control in the East until their loss to Mizzou.  Oregon invaded Washington and came away with 2 wins and K-State didn't roll over against Baylor who up until that game was averaging 69 points.

This looks to be more of the same.  3 games where BOTH teams are in the top 25 and 2 where they're in the top 15.

The SEC is down this year, compared to last year, but the game overall is doing just fine.

Which is why the SEC has a record eight teams in the Top 25 this week, right?

Reality called: the SEC as a conference is stronger and more successful than it has ever been.

Hmm, citing polls where none of the writers watches the West coast games unless USC is involved?  Dubious.

Then to top it off you link to the SEC's biggest cheerleader, who has a vested interest in ginning up interest in the games they're televising.

Pac-12 is stronger than the SEC this year.

Florida Shiat University does not matter, especially since their a-hole of a former coach was handed a record he damn sure didn't deserve.  Of course if Clemson is predicted to absolutely deestroy FSU, then it matters as I like to watch them be humiliated in front of a live national audience.

Even if they win the east, which I don't think they will, there is no way they will get past bama, sorry but UGA couldn't do it last year and that team would have stomped this years UGA team.

Hence why I said that part.

The 90s was the coming out decade for most of the other SEC teams (maybe in part because Alabama was down and left the power vacuum open) that has since led it to become the stronger conference all-around that it is now.

Before that point though, the only SEC team to consistently be a powerhouse decade after decade was Bama.

Do you know what revisionist history is? Those are part of their NC they gave themselves in the 80s while using some formula that didn't exist.

Its a stupid argument anyway, all were good teams but to say they weren't is just trolling at this point.

I never argued that they are on the same level best Bryant made sure of that but are they a traditional power? That is not even an argument, there is a reason they are ranked every year even if they don't deserve it.

Oh well people turn arguments on me so many times I lost track.

Point to you was, until bear they were on equal footing, he shot them above everyone else that's a fact nobody can argue. Still doesn't change Georgia gets ranked even when they don't deserve it which is why people on fark will argue any time traditional power is threatened, its the same reason why they argue Boise St so hard. Which this year I find ironic because if they would have went to what was the big east they would have had an easier schedule this year.

A Fark Handle: that game's important and all, but no one actually thinks mizzou is in the sec or belongs in the sec, so just perhaps they are going with a much more traditional match-up...

Give it time. When Arkansas and South Carolina joined the SEC, the Gamecocks were dismissed much in the same way as Missouri as being an unimportant school with an athletic department not up to conference standards. Many said the SEC only took in SC to balance out bringing in Arkansas. But now they're an integral part of the conference. As long as Mizzou invests in their program to continue its improvement, it'll be fine. I know some think culturally Missouri is midwestern but throughout much of the history of the US it was a mostly rural agricultural state that was similar to southern states. And hopefully it'll inspire some of the SEC schools (don't laugh) to improve their academics. Not every state school needs to be a member of the AAU but there are several non-AAU schools in the SEC that could take that step without too much trouble if it was considered important.

Well the issue is who they have played, let's not act like Tennessee is a good gauge of the sec, at least the past decade or so. If they start calling all defense like this then the sec is in trouble.

Vandy ball, 4th & 4.  Incomplete pass, guy gets called for targeting (terrible call - shoulder to chest).  Ruling is overturned, but it's still an automatic first down.  Vandy scores a touchdown a few plays later.

2013-10-19 03:36:26 PM

steamingpile: rugman11: EngineerAU: swankywanky: you've gotta be kidding me with these targeting calls, especially that one

The tv isn't on so I don't know which call you're referring to but I get the feeling that many of the refs don't like the rule and are trying to enforce it in such a farked up way as to guarantee it's going to be changed when the season is over.

Vandy ball, 4th & 4.  Incomplete pass, guy gets called for targeting (terrible call - shoulder to chest).  Ruling is overturned, but it's still an automatic first down.  Vandy scores a touchdown a few plays later.

Georgia 27, Vandy 14, Refs 7

Its actually vandy 7 refs 14

The first TD was continued on the same kind of bullshiat call when the guy barely tapped the QB.

That one was a little different.  It would have been 3rd and 3 at the Georgia 20 without the penalty instead of 1st and 10 at the 10.  I'm willing to give Vandy this one.

The second penalty straight-up changed possession.

This is a good year to be a sports fan from Missouri. Cardddddnals going to the WS, Chiefs are 6-0 after arguably the worst season of any team in the history of the NFL last year, Royals managed to not blow a season out their asses, Sporting's got a playoff berth and reasonable shot at the Supporter's Shield, and Mizzou's doing an incredible job with football. Blues aren't doing bad either.

Eh, the Cardinals are the Cardinals. Any gloating on the part of a Cardinals fan (and there's usually quite a bit) can be quelled, as this transcript of an interaction between myself and my girlfriend last night shows:

Girlfriend (a St. Louis native): "Looks like the Cardinals won."

Me: "Does this mean they're going to the World Series?"

Girlfriend: "Yep."

Me: "The Carddddnals? We should go down by the river to buy a soda and a sunduh for a quarrrrter to celebrate. It's right down Rawt Farty-Far. Better warsh up the Buick befar we go."

No because too many people still love him and I don't fully blame him for this loss, those moronic targeting penalties, the fumble, and the muffed snap farked them. Most of that is out of his control, without those plays they win but oh well douchebag gets a win that makes him look good even though their team is average.

Mid_mo_mad_man: DirtyDeadGhostofEbenezerCooke: Mid_mo_mad_man: Missouri vs Florida is meh? You do know that Missouri was picked to be in last place in the East? Now they control the East with a win. Why the heck is Vandy vs Georgia CBS' first game? Poor pick CBS.

CBS read last week's thread about how helplessly crippled Georgia is and are rolling the dice that Vandy will be able to push the Dawg's wheelchair out a 10th floor window.

They also passed on SC at Mizzou next week. That's going to be huge if Missouri wins today.

i ain't that old, but 14 team conferences with 8 conference games is silly. crossover scheduling determines so much.  and it kills basketball too.  a 10 team conference with a round robin is ideal, but it's all about the tv benjamins.  the level of whoring for tv dollars the conferences have decided to go to is sad.  but i guess we can all pretend 16 team conferences are the dream...

And was their biggest pass rush threat, they need to just take the penalty away if the ejection is overturned.

They had two of them and one directly led to a TD.

bionicjoe: rugman11: Mizzou is pretty good this year, but they've been pretty good for the past several years.  Nobody's denied that.

And other teams have gotten a shot at the National Championship.  By my count, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Texas, Oregon, and Notre Dame so far.

I was making fun of the 'SEC Dominance / week-in/week-out tough' nonsense.
I remember people saying it would be a few years before Mizzou and A&M 'caught up' to the SEC.

True, though I'd put a lot of A&M's "catch up" on Johnny Manziel.  Without him, they probably lose to Ole Miss, LA Tech, and Alabama last year, finishing 8-5.  They probably also lose to Arkansas and Ole Miss this year, so they'd be 3-3.

I do think the SEC middle/lower class have been pretty weak the last few years.  And even the top teams this year are showing some cracks.

The actual targeting rule reads as follows:
No player shall target and initiate contact vs. opponent with the crown of his helmet.
No player shall target and initiate contact to the head or neck area of a defenseless opponent

The problem is that it's a rule based on intent.  My interpretation of that play is that the player was not targeting.  It seemed clear to me that he was leading with his shoulder and the helmet-to-helmet contact was incidental.  But I don't know that, and neither do the refs.  But the refs are required to discern the intent of the player and if he was leading with his helmet or shoulder.  It's really tough to make that call, though, as we've been seeing all day.

The way I look at it, if you've got a penalty that's being overturned nearly half the time it seems (though I'd love somebody to get the exact numbers), the problem isn't the officials, it's the penalty.

I think so, too.  But you can't deny that there's helmet-to-helmet contact.  The question is, was it purposeful "targeting" or incidental contact.  I'd argue the latter, but we can't know for certain.

Maybe the problem is that the officials have been told to to err on the side of targeting instead of the side of incidental contact.  I don't know.

Watching the gif, he seemed to lead with his shoulder, but the problem is that he launched himself high and made no effort to actually tackle the receiver, he was just going for the big hit. The way the receiver turned, the helmet got there first. That's going to be called every single time, because there was no reason for him to launch himself like that...if he had his arms out trying to make the tackle, I'll bet the call would have been overturned.

Thinking back to that Eastern Washington game, a white hot rage comes over me. The phantom personal foul that stalled our drive late in the 4th that gave EWU the ball back. Then, the fumble call upheld AFTER review when video evidence showed Jensen was down prior to the fumble.

At full speed, I don't see how they could not call it. It's a bit less clear cut in the opposite angle shot, but could be shoulder or head, can't really tell. At any rate, it's still stupid to launch yourself head first into somebody.

I think they made the wrong call on this one.

An FCS team (Which is D-I...not D-II), with back to back National championships, headed for a three-peat, and is ranked higher than most of the FBS teams today isn't allowed to be spoken about in the Saturday College Football thread here on Fark.  So only FBS is really allowed to be discussed.  gotcha.

None of that changes that an sec team only has to play 62% of their conference. That's super weak. I can cherry-pick the weaklings out the sec schedule too. On top of that, oregon only has 1 non AQ conference opponent this year. Not a single sec team can say that. 3 pac12 teams can.

Ok, this hit should have been called.  The Lineman saw the ball had been thrown and still targeted the QB for a hit.  The Ref pulled the flag out when he saw the ball was thrown but the Lineman continued full speed at the QB and didn't put the breaks on.   I don't know about targeting, but late hit or unsportsman like?  I'd call it.

Hey, the Ducks play all kinds of powerhouses, like Nicholls State, Virginia, Cal, Wash St, Ore St, and Colorado! It's no picnic, let me tell ya!!!

That's rough.

Not only that, they may actually have to play THREE Top-25 teams this year! OH THE HUMANITY

Poor dears. **clutches pearls**

None of that changes that an sec team only has to play 62% of their conference. That's super weak. I can cherry-pick the weaklings out the sec schedule too. On top of that, oregon only has 1 non AQ conference opponent this year. Not a single sec team can say that. 3 pac12 teams can.

The point still remains, The SEC barely plays over half it's conference. They don't beat each other up.

The SEC could play the HS 5As in their states and play a tougher schedule than the PAC 12.

There's only one way to settle this: VIAGRA BONER CHALLENGE!!

If I had a penis it would be harder WITHOUT Viagra than a PAC 12 schedule. Truth.

Bschott007: rugman11: Wow, just saw this play again.

In the terrible Georgia targeting penalty that WASN'T overturned (as opposed to the terrible Georgia targeting penalty that was overturned), the referee literally has his flag out before the player makes contact, like he's just looking for something to call.

I'd also point out that the other defender who was headed for the QB had slowed down and started to turn away from the QB after the throw but the Lineman who made contact with the QB did so at full speed anyway.  Valid call.

You Pac-12 people are crazy.  It's like you've built up a huge boogeyman to explain why no one else thinks the Pac is any good.  It's always the SEC, too.  Everyone has weak games.  Get over it and enjoy watching the good ones.

Reading comprehension.

The contenders he was referring to were teams like s Carolina...that 12th ranked team that got beat by Tennesee. A team that Oregon put 59 on in 3 quarters.

Yeah, it's kinda of a contrived system isn't it?  If the FBS wants a national title, then do a system like the NFL, FCS, D-II and D-III, high school football....heck pretty much any other level of football...would do for their national title.   The FBS 'title' system is just silly.

True, but wouldn't it be less of a clusterfarked system if they featured a 24-team playoff with the top teams in the FBS's 10 conferences automatically qualify while the other 14 teams are selected for a playoff berth by ranking in the top 12 or top 16 in the final BCS standings.   If it works for the NFL and the FCS, why is it so hard for the FBS to do?

Bschott007: If it works for the NFL and the FCS

The playoffs cost the FCS (and each school that advances) money and some schools would rather not participate, but obviously you'd be a really unpopular administrator if that happened. So no, it doesn't really "work" for them.

Funny thing you forgot to mention is that NO team playing in the FBS has a shot at a National Championship this year.

I think you mean NCAA championship.

Yeah, it's kinda of a contrived system isn't it?  If the FBS wants a national title, then do a system like the NFL, FCS, D-II and D-III, high school football....heck pretty much any other level of football...would do for their national title.   The FBS 'title' system is just silly.

They have a "National Title" it's just awarded by the BCS and not the NCAA.

I still think this is just iamright on an alt since he's the one always biatching that Div II is superior since THEY have a playoff.

Not an alt, this is my main account.  Also, you must really not pay much attention to College football if you keep confusing D-I (FBS and FCS) with D-II.

False. First of all, I like the lack of a playoff. In fact, I was fine without the BCS, back in the days of multiple champions. And FCS is not Division II.

I just troll you with pointing out that my team has won a national championship within memory while your team hasn't because I can, and because you're dismissive of any other level of football.

They'd have to shorten the schedule for one.  FCS teams play only 11 games over 12 weeks, with the first round of the playoffs starting Thanksgiving weekend.

Bschott007: Just like the fact that most Bowl game appearances cost FBS teams more money than they make on the bowl game?

Kind of. But it's sadder when you're playing at home stadia and you still can't sell out playoff games.

It ends up being dumb because all the students are home on winter break, so you only get the locals. Then you have several weeks' worth of travel for road teams, if they somehow win, which costs money. So everyone loses money, unless one of the few teams with huge fanbases wins.

Makes sense.  Also I'll go on the record to say that I DO NOT think that the FCS is better than the FBS, I just think if they are going to have a BCS national title, they should simplify it and make it based on the W-L record and have a one and out playoff system like the NFL or any other level of football.

I'll also point out that there are FCS teams that are stronger than FBS teams.  Just because a university can't afford or has made the decision not to hand out a bunch of scholarships doesn't automatically mean that they should be ignored or laughed off.  When Appy state three-peated the FCS championship and beat Michigan in their own stadium, should that team have been laughed off as a joke since they weren't an FBS team?   The only thing they needed to do was hand out a few more scholarships and be invited by a FBS conference.   That's what irks me about 'fans' like SteamingPile.  They are small-minded and have an overly simple view of the world.

False.  The FCS teams were in Division I until 1978, when the Division I-A teams split off.  Divisions II and III are completely separate.

Division I-AA was never called Division II because it never was Division II.

FCS has a selection committee as well. You have to when you have a large playoff field since it's pretty much never going to work out where the best teams have the best records and there's a perfect cutoff point between, say, 9-4 teams and 8-5 teams.

I get that.  I'm the same way.  Sagarin has ND State rated 43rd right now, between Penn State and Iowa.  They are not a second-class team.

cameroncrazy1984: The only way two teams could be "equally good" is if they had the same players.

Incorrect. Let's pretend it's like Coke/Pepsi. Is either one really better than the other? People will argue to the death for their side, but basically they're the same damn thing with a different "uniform" on. Similarly, some teams you could watch them play 200 times and each would win 100. Just because one team happens to win the game that happens doesn't mean they're better.

Or, like conference championship games where Team 1 beats Team 2 in the regular season but Team 2 beats Team 1 in the championship (or LSU/Bama from a couple years ago)...which one is better?

rugman11: IAmRight: And I know they have a selection committee because I remember in our championship year, we were ranked No. 1 at the end of the season and got the 5 seed. It worked out that everyone higher ranked than us got upset before we faced them until the championship game, so we still ended up at home each week, but still, that's asinine. How the f*ck do you put the No. 1 team in the fifth-best slot?

Eastern Washington?  No idea.  For what it's worth, Sagarin had them third among AA schools, behind Delaware and Villanova.

Okay, looked at it closer.  You lost to Montana State, so it makes sense that they ended up higher since they were conference co-champions and won head-to-head.  EWU also only had one win against a ranked team, whereas Delaware and William & Mary had four and App State had two.  App State had only one loss in FCS to the team that finished ranked 5th.  And that was a 7 point loss versus EWU's 23 point loss.  It's not 100% obvious, but there are arguments for the other teams.

Still no excuse for a 5 seed. I assume that some of the seeding was based on keeping travel expenses down and maybe increasing attendance. Kudos to the few crazy fans who made it from Villanova all the way out to Cheney. NDSU was the only team that had a good amount of fans show up.

/f*ck, I think we had more people show up in Texas than showed up for any of the playoff games

rugman11: steamingpile: cameroncrazy1984: IAmRight: False. First of all, I like the lack of a playoff. In fact, I was fine without the BCS, back in the days of multiple champions. And FCS is not Division II.

Well, we know your handle is a lie.;

Yes because he's just arguing semantics, Div II is still just I-AA and people called it Div II for years since its a level lower than real football.

No offense to Michigan fans there....

False.  The FCS teams were in Division I until 1978, when the Division I-A teams split off.  Divisions II and III are completely separate.

Division I-AA was never called Division II because it never was Division II.

In your world yes but in everyone else's world it was Div II, I caught shiat from my cousins after talking to holy cross about going there on a partial years ago.

It was considered a step down from big name programs and I took shiat, which is why I laughed when he only got offered partial from Hillsborough community college.

Yeah, dammit, that was the other game where Jones got injured and missed.

The point I was initially making, anyway, is that the FCS playoff field is selected by a committee. It's not a matter of just taking the top teams and putting them in a playoff. Can't do it in a division with so many teams with so few games between them.

/then next year injuries f*cked our chances at a repeat, as basically every single top player except our QB got hurt

IAmRight: Bschott007: I just think if they are going to have a BCS national title, they should simplify it and make it based on the W-L record and have a one and out playoff system like the NFL or any other level of football.

FCS has a selection committee as well. You have to when you have a large playoff field since it's pretty much never going to work out where the best teams have the best records and there's a perfect cutoff point between, say, 9-4 teams and 8-5 teams.

Thinking on what you said, I would agree that it would need a selection committee since that is a large playoff field.    Almost becomes like March Madness in a sense. My first thought was based on a combination of the FCS rules and the BCS rules, but even something with a 8 or 10 team playoff would be better than the current system.  I'm not sold on the FBS 4-team playoff system setup for next year.

rugman11:  I get that.  I'm the same way.  Sagarin has ND State rated 43rd right now, between Penn State and Iowa.  They are not a second-class team.

I wouldn't mind an 8-team playoff, I just think beyond that it gets a bit unwieldy.

Thanks for that, rugman11.   SteamingPile can troll as hard as he wants but the facts are these:

As you said, Sagarin has NDSU ranked #43 as of last Saturday, which places them over Vanderbilt (#48), Rutgers (#53), Duke (#71), Minnesota State (#77) and so on.   In fact NDSU ranks higher than most of the FBS teams playing today.

NDSU has won two FCS Championships and are favored for this years as well. Only Appalachian State has ever managed to do the Three-Peat, and that team beat Michigan.

NDSU moved up to the FCS in 2004 and were eligible for the playoffs in 2008 . It says something about the team if they can go from D-II to D-I and within two years of being eligible, they make the playoffs and within 3 years of being eligible they take the championship....then take back to back championships...and are now aiming at a third.

NDSU's win over Kansas State was the fourth straight victory over an FBS team since they made the move to FCS.  The Bison are also 7-3 against FBS teams with 2-1 records against both the Big 12 and Big Ten.

NDSU hasn't lost on the road since 2010.

Talking about records, the Bison have a current Division I record of 88-29 and are currently 35-2 since the 2010 season.

The have had only 3 losing seasons since 1964.

But since they are an FCS team, people laugh.

I heard you put em in your mouth

Ha ha

I'm really torn now since I have to root for bama to beat the shiat out of Mizzou since they talked so much shiat the past few weeks. They got lucky to join the east in a down period, any other time in the previous decade they would have gotten their asses handed to them already.

I feel dirty cheering for bama

You may as well jump on board a winner seeing as how Richt has pulled a classic Richt this year.

I would argue except you're right and I can't provide a counterpoint.

We would save a lot of time if you'd just keep that I'm mind ;-)

veedeevadeevoodee: CONAN, WHAT IS BEST IN LIFE ?

TO CRUSH THE AGGIES, SEE THEM DRIVEN BEFORE YOU, AND HEAR THE LAMENTATION OF THE REDNECKS

Not just rednecks but the dorkiest rednecks.

IAmRight: Bschott007: NDSU hasn't lost on the road since 2010.

WOOOOO GO EAGLES!

/was at that game
//have a bunch of great photos from it, too

Well I cheer for the Eaglets and NDSU but obviously I'm mainly an NDSU fan.   Nice to see another fan of an FCS team.

PluckYew: melopene: Krymson Tyde: melopene: Krymson Tyde: Blocked FG by Bama. Still 21-0

At the rate this is going, I'm going to have to change out of my houndstooth after the game before heading to a party. Somehow I don't think all the Razorback fans around here will appreciate my jokes about their 'NeverYield' hashtag.

Might be a good idea, but it would be fun not to.

Since the people at this party are an unknown to me (I'm going with someone else and don't know any of these people, and it's apparently at a tattoo/piercing studio or something strange like that), it's probably best for safety reasons.

At least you warded off the days shenanigans.

SHUT UP DONT YOU JINX IT.

*runs to find more houndstooth*

Watch out for roofies. Tattoo rape is a thing.

Do guys really have a problem with jeans "cutting into" them if they're not Wranglers?  I haven't.

ScouserDuck: Rent Party: Dear Sark,

If you lose to ASU, you should be fired.

Sincerely,

Rent Party

Unfortunately it seems as having Stanford and Oregon back to back has turned Washington's D into warm butter.

And the O-line is still has more holes in it than swiss cheese.

And this will be the third year in a row with a three game losing streak.

It may be time to entertain the idea that Sark might not be the wizard we hoped he was.  This team went from really bad to consistently mediocre.

Well, they're not very comfy when they're made with knife blades.
