For anybody that still wants to kick in the $5 or so for an end of season prize for the predictions league, I've offered to be the person to hold the money and send the gift to the winner. Paypal it to Unfreakable at the gmail dotcom.

This weekend's games look to be really great for neutrals.

And for those of you who might have missed it, Bayer Leverkusen won their game because of a ghost goal that somehow ended up in the back of the net despite never going through the goal mouth.

Here's another video that shows it a bit more:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=44m9ewopBGk. The commentary sounds like Russian, but lots of replays to watch.

Hole in the side of the net. You can see it toward the end of the second video, the defenders show the ref. But he let the goal stand anyway.

I heard about it on the radio, but didn't see it until now. I wonder if the Liga will overturn it. Not only did that win the match for Leverkusen, it put them in first place (pending whatever Dortmund and Bayern do in their matches).

Yeah, but it looked like he dove first when he should have taken a step. It just looked saveable to me. Easy for me to say watching a replay in slow motion, though.

No kidding. Maybe they're all still sleeping.

GERRARD makes it 1-1

If you don't want to give up a penalty and get sent off, you don't farking grab someones shoulder in the box as they're in on your keeper.  You especially don't grab someone like Suarez who IS going to go down.  Newcastle doesn't have a thing to be pissed off about there.  Architects of their own downfall.

Easy call. Straightforward red card, confirmed by the replay. Suarez may go down easy, but you can't put hands on another player in the box, that's Football Defending 101

Afternoon everyone. FFPL report during the 1500 games.

Your team is winning, creating more chances, you go for a widdle and return to 'and Gerard equalises from the penalty spot after the red card'.

Le sigh.

I insured a 2-2.

For Liverpool to achieve CL qualification, they must finish higher than two of the following:

Spurs
Chelsea
Arsenal
MUFC
MCFC

Irrespective of the outcome of this game, which I still wouldn't be surprised to lose [wounds from the mid-nineties still have scars] I can't see that happening.

2013-10-19 09:06:32 AM
I had this 2-1 Reds.  Blah

2013-10-19 09:09:59 AM
There are two cases I can see where they've replayed the match. One in 1994 (1st league) and one in 1978 (2nd league). There have also been other cases where the call on the field stood despite being incorrect. The Deutscher Fußball-Bund (German equivalent to the FA in England) is in contact with FIFA on this as well. One way or another, this is going to lead to a major push for video replay for questionable goals.

Oh wow. I thought I had called Liverpool/Newcastle 2-1, apparently I changed it to 2-2 sometime last night. Hooray for second thoughts (this time)

Also predicted a 2-1 Arsenal win today, but they're playing sort of loose at the moment. Pretty sure the Canaries will sting them on a counter today.

Honestly, it was hard to place a banker this week. Chelsea at home  seemed the most sure but it was only 2x and Cardiff can surprise you. Southampton doesn't concede many goals and Man U has had a bit of trouble creating, and you'd think Man City would be a slam-dunk, but they're unpredictable. There was no clear stand-alone Banker game that I was completely confident about. Everton seemed the most likely.

Eveton should win a game like this.  However, they were lucky to get the goal they got and really haven't created many chances. I would expect Everton to come out strong in the second half and hopefully win.  Hull's defense does not seem too well organized and there will be gaps to exploit.

It is your FFPL report!

img.fark.net

After a two week break and an invigorating 2-2 Toon-Pool game, FFPL returns!

At the top, wynswrld holds onto his commanding lead with his Banker Presidency fully intact. I sneak back into second and nathanjr spoons in close behind in third.

At the bottom, we have three sub-zeroes and two possible zombies. Cameroncrazy1984 has taken a moment out from commenting on the Politics tab to get in gear, but ocirats and okdaddio are smelling a bit off. But as okdaddio supports - squint - Burnley that might explain that.

Top-scorer of the week was Adubs86 with a respectable 145, incorporating a 90pt banker for a cheeky 1-3 prediction on NCFC Vs Chelski. Obamartins dragged in 125 with only two incorrect predications. Rev.K takes round bronze with 120. His total score after 7 rounds now 130.

The_man_of_pa scored a live zen. Page 2 zens all zombies I think. Zombie zens? Ooooooooooooommmmmmmbbrraaaaains.

Banker Bonus club showing green shoots of recovery, with Sachbash, tom_servo_bit_me and Adubs86 all waiting on a trip by wynswrld.

Highest climber of the week is Princips_Sandwich who rose 11. Sandwich Gap now at 55pts. Mr_H rises five within the top ten, no mean feat. Dropping 8 is Bolo78, thanks to 6 incorrect predications.

Juicepats clings onto the bottom of Page 2, whilst Dfect is just 5 points behind at the bottom of Page 2.
Our meadian player - Preebs - is scoring 38pts a week.

I highly doubt they will. An official complaint has been filed, but the ruling pretty much has always been that they don't overturn calls made by the ref. Same thing with no-goals that actually did cross the line.

Bayern had something like 80% possession in the first half but it went to halftime at 0-1 against them after a horrible mistake left Mainz with an easy goal right before the half. However, Bayern came storming back and it's now 4-1 (3 goals, one penalty... a handball I believe... my feed froze and I only got a muffled German audio so it may have been something else)

Dortmund got an early goal in and that's all so far. Schalke is still even with Braunschweig.

Or Kagawa. Subbing in Giggs doesn't work anymore.  Back line is terrible, don't know wtf they are doing on that corner.  Everyone just doesn't look that great except maybe RvP, Rooney, Carrick and Januez or however you spell it.

Hey all. Just watched my recording of the Liverpool match (couldn't get up for the 4:30 this time round). Notes:

1) fark you, Liverpool. You can't have an extra guy for 50 minutes and draw with Newcastle. I'm glad you were barely able to at least squeak out a draw rather than lose but the game shouldn't have been that farking frustrating to watch.

2) Sterling should have come on for hendo and 5 minutes eater. Johnson was at least putting shots on target regularly.

3) see point #1

Gotta love the tweets to the BBC:

Jason Eden: If Southampton are to compete for a Champions League place then they really need to be beating these mid table sides.

+80 for me so far, but with my banker still to lose on City

Rev.K: Had the Liverpool game on PVR. Just finished.

A 2-2 draw was a gift. That passing was horrendous. Conceding with Newcastle down to 10? Ugh.

I just finished the same thing and I was going to say the same thing. Just a poor performance and we're fortunate to escape with a point. But I guess that's a sign of a good team, when you get a point when you don't deserve anything.

Norwich played well and was dangerous most of the game. It stayed close until the last 20 minutes and they never stopped threatening--the Canaries have nothing to be ashamed of. I was worried going into the game.

I was thinking of compiling a checklist of things Moyes does wrong most games. Then I thought about the things he does well, things that I like about him. I liked him at Everton, he seemed quite honest and dependable and he did a really good job. I wasn't entirely for his appointment, but United didn't have many options. Mourinho is the antithesis of everything United stands for. Pep (sensibly) chose Bayern, why would Klopp leave Dortmund for United, De Boer will probably only leave Ajax for Barca. I can't really think of anyone else I'd have wanted.

So there were certain elements of Moyes that made sense. Now, I'm trying to think of things he's done so far that make me like or admire him. Nothing.

I'll give him time, but only because I'll give anyone time.

I think all the coaches you mentioned would have trouble with that talent. If nothing else, Fergie deserves extra credit for the magic act he pulled off last season

Solskjaer, obviously. That goes without saying. But he needs another couple of years in Norway, and another few years of over-achievement with another club.

Changing managers after spending so long with the same man is bound to cause a drop in form. The players all knew what Fergie wanted out of them. It'll take time to get used to Moyes' demands.

I actually disagree about the talent, but aside from that, those other coaches wouldn't sideline Kagawa/Zaha, make such negative substitutions, be so tactically inflexible, be so in awe of Rooney, etc.

What you want to do in that instance is promote from within. Take the most promising-looking subsidiary coach on the staff, or the manager's right-hand man, and hand them the reins. It won't be the big splashy name, obviously, but it provides some amount of continuity.

I agree and would add until he retired everyone knew that Fergie was the one person who mattered.  If you did he wanted you to, you'd get your time.  If you didn't, you'd sit or get shipped out.  With a new manager, perhaps there is less certainty about where the power really lays.  That's the tough part of the transition.

It was pretty easy for Moyes to establish control at Everton.  At Manchester United, it will be more difficult.

2013-10-20 11:35:44 AM
Both Spurs and Villa are going to be in massive trouble for that flare hitting the linesman.

At a major soccer ground, you chuck a flare, it might as well be. There's a reason there's so much security at soccer stadiums: specifically to catch guys that do that kind of shiat. They will find the guy and he's going to be lucky to be allowed to set foot in a stadium anywhere in England, let alone Villa Park, ever again.

As a competitor, I've called Fergie a whole lot of foul and unrepeatable names, but that's only because his teams have consistently been tough to beat. He's well known as a dressing room motivator, instilling his teams with confidence and pushing them to always give their full effort to every game. Even at his advanced age he was full of fire and fury. He might protect his players to a fault in front of the cameras, then rail on them mercilessly behind closed doors.

Moyes just isn't like that. He's got a temper in him, but it's early and he doesn't want to lose the team. By comparison with Ferguson, he's analytical. For the existing team, with all those veterans, it's going to feel like the pressure is off. They've still got tons of quality, but Moyes isn't pushing them the way Fergie did. We'll see if the players step up.

As it should be. Otherwise you get stuff like Dida's incident, where fans started throwing bottles and flares onto the field, hitting the man in the shoulder and giving him first-degree burns.

Flares? Oh, yeah. Flares show up in soccer stadiums all the time (though not all stadiums allow them). Often they're a major part of the supporter groups' tifo displays. The thing is, though, they are supposed to be for display purposes, not for throwing purposes.

He's got a bald cat that he stashes in the back of the net for good luck.

Mr_H: I'm somewhat surprised they managed to smuggle a smoke bomb that size into the stadium.

/ban'em for life

For Premier League games its not that hard any more. The days of pat downs before you can go into the stadium have been over for a number of years. It would be easy to smuggle in an entire bottle of wine under a coat.

Word on the wire is the guy that threw the smoke bomb is being dealt with by security.

Wow, last time I went to a Columbus Crew game here in the states I got a complimentary prostate exam.

The only stadiums i have been to recently is Carrow Road (no history at all of crowd trouble) and Wembly (for a rugby match so again no corwd trouble expected) so you might want to take that with a grain of salt. Non of them have been Millwall vs anyone games.

And that was by a stranger in the parking lot.

He got hit in the chest and he's clutching his face?

Nice flop there Walker. That elbow didn't even reach his neck.

Benteke alert.

Bentekkers!

HERE COME DA MAN

Aw, so close. Just too high for Benteke.

Villa goal is imminent

2013-10-20 12:23:48 PM
Villa just notched up a few levels. Spurs getting swamped right now.

2013-10-20 12:26:32 PM
Villa's gonna give Benteke all the touches they possibly can.

2013-10-20 12:27:11 PM
...that.... that, ummm... that complicates matters slightly.

2013-10-20 12:27:15 PM
I mean Spuds. Spuds goal is imminent

2013-10-20 12:27:32 PM
Poor Villa. Every time they look like they're dominating, they concede. 0-2 really isn't fair here.

2013-10-20 12:27:57 PM
Perfect in play.

2013-10-20 12:28:01 PM
That was impressive...a bit against the run of play.  Was thinking Villa might level it...not now.

Well, them's the breaks. Only stat that matters is the score. We either put it in the net or we don't. All we can do is put it in the net or shut up.

Aston Villa can score one and I'll be very content with that scoreline.

Predictor site FINALLY back up for me. Just in time to see me sitting on +130 for the week, +140 or +160 with a 2-1 Spurs win.

+155. My best week ever I believe

100 more than me.

btw guys, I split both lips and chipped a tooth getting in a fight with a sidewalk last night.  Needless to say, I'm still in bed, wondering if my brain will explode out of my skull.

Did you at least mess up that sidewalk or was it a one sided affair?

The sidewalk will be forever marked by the blood of my ancestors.

I'd be upset if I came back from the bathroom and Jose Mourinho had stolen my seat.

For me:
Sweden, France, Greece and Croatia.

It would be quite funny if France didn't make it.

SmackLT: Anybody watching the Crystal Palace/Fulham game? Sick goal by Kasami

I don't know that I'd put it on the level of the tiki-taka goal from yesterday like the announcer said, but that was a hell of a shot.
