Either the maker of the stove or the car seat is going to be sued because of this.

Neighbor Duwayne Johnson said he was working on a motorcyclist in his garage Thursday afternoon when heard "somebody cursing and screaming very loudly."

But could he smell what they were cooking?

I call bullshiat on this one. Car seats work (other than in the car) for babbies who are not yet mobile and have nothing better to do than sit there. Eleven month olds want to go go go. Rarely would a babby of that age be content to sit there all strapped in. I suspect babby was given the hot seat as punishment for some terrible babby crime, and stupid sitter lady did not realize how hot it would get.

megarian: Do they make stoves for NOT cooking?

Yes. Stoves are how people heat their homes in East Tennessee (and other parts) when they are too poor to afford to add central heat or buy a house new enough to have that. They typically are gas, but old wood and coal burning ones exist and are still in use.

Also, a stove is the big part you bake things in; the part on top is called a range and is not always attached to a stove.

2013-10-18 11:42:01 PM
It was unclear if child was burned because the stove was turned on or or if the stove was still hot after recently being turned off.

Jesus. F*cking. Christ.

That article is full of fail on everybody's part, especially the 'journalist'.

No word anywhere in the article on whether the baby was injured or it was killed. We're left to assume.

Yeah bud. Most old stoves had a place for a kettle for tea but not necessarily anywhere for food. So the stove part had the wood, the range part (on top) is for the kettle, but there's no oven. Sorry pic is huge.

This happened a couple years ago where I live... Mother got out of the car, went inside, set baby in car seat on stove. Mother went upstairs and not too long after the baby started screaming. Mother came back downstairs and said she tried to grab the baby but it was too hot. Baby died. Mother would rather her precious hands not be burned and instead watched as her baby became engulfed in the flames. AFAIK she spent some time in jail but wasn't charged, either that or bond was set extremely low and she posted it to get out. Hell if that was my baby I think I could deal with some burns to my hands to save a child. If not at least a good kick to the side of the car seat should be able to knock it off the stove.

Good chance that babby was asleep.  Even better chance another babby decided to fiddle with the stove controls when she wasn't looking.  They move quickly.

Happened to my son's mother with her first.  Empty car seat on stove, babby fiddles with controls, plastic melty babby chair.

Plastic Melty Babby Chair!

I use a glass cooktop electric with "touch controls" that are supposed to respond to human fingers.  However they respond to all sorts of items inadvertantly placed atop that section of glass.  I hate the damn thing, but it's a rental so I have to live with it.  Perhaps the car seat was set with one corner atop the controls and it was accidentally left on.  People who have gas stoves it's always obvious when the burner is on.  When it's an electric it's often not obvious, could have been left on at low earlier is another possibility.  The court will sort this out, not a bunch of internet kibitzers.

Oh jeez yeah I know the exact type.  Suckage all the way.

What his Mom learned, and the woman from the article is...always put the damn thing on the floor.  I was always nervous with my babby being up so high in the seat, he always went on the floor.  There was the time I kicked the dog because it almost peed on the babby.  Only a woman from arr would be so instain.

Cooking stove...as opposed to the non-cooking stove?

/wonders who in the world would place a car seat on a stove to begin with
