I've worked Black Fridays at Penny's. It sucks.

Only thing that really bothers me about this trend is that several of my wife's family works in retail, one of whom works at Macy's - but she's probably retiring at the end of this seasons so there's that.

Other than that, don't really care. I have no interest in Black Friday deals which are rarely better than a lottery draw when it comes to trying to get them, and OMG a 40" crappy plasma TV for $200 except the model in question probably blows.

Really don't understand the zeal. People act like SPEND LIKE CRAZY DAY is a good thing for a society that is terrible at saving money.

My office is closed both Thanksgiving and Black Friday.

/which means I don't get paid, because no paid holidays for hourly contractors

He probably doesn't get holidays off either. But instead off fighting to get holidays off he is the type that will fight to make other people have to work holidays also and cheer when it happens.

Is there really that much to be made on thanksgiving night? Why not push black friday into saturday and sunday?

This is asinine.

Because if they make the sales shorter and more inconvenient, you're more likely to buy stuff before it goes back up in price, not realizing you're STILL overspending on something you don't need.

All they'd have to do is put up more decorations and make sure they sell last minute gifts and food supplies.

I doubt any of them were getting OT. Stores usually schedule it out so they don't have to pay OT and very few of their employees qualify for holiday pay.

Real AmericansTMwho live in Real AmericaTM don't have any stores of note beside Walmart, so they can pretty much do what they want (including the wildly understaffed stores, bare shelves, etc that are becoming their calling card).

A bit off topic, but when did what America spends at Christmas become an important economic indicator?
I've been wondering this for years.

"This year the average American family managed to have $1000 more in savings at year's end. Since this is the tenth year of this happening the average family has $10,000 in savings. THE ECONOMY IS RUINED!"

Hmmm...that doesn't make sense. Better spend our way wealthy.

A good number of them think liberals and Democrats took Christ out of Christmas. They discuss it in front of their kids during commercials on Fox News while Santa Claus sells them Coca-Cola.

You can make the Bible-thumpers believe anything. Just give them something dark-skinned or foreign to hate and you can sell them the lumber, nails, and scourge. Wear a devil costume while you do it. See if they notice.

Good. It's this kind of shiat that's convincing my fiancee that going out shopping on Black Friday is worthless. Years ago, she'd wake me up in the morning. Then, it was midnight. Then, it was midnight but fark that because there's already a line. Now, it's gonna be fark that and just let the booze and turkey take its course.

Meanwhile, I'll probably grab my every third year graphics card upgrade online if I'm sober enough to handle that.

Should businesses be trying to lose money?

If being open for one extra day out of the year is enough to make or break a company, would it be fair to say that they are not particularly good at the business of making profit?

Most of the reason is to keep the competition from making a profit.

I work as a seasonal manager at Brookstone in a mall. Black friday is never the busiest day of the year for us, and I doubt it is for any other stores either. Last year we opened at the buttcrack of dawn and had almost no sales until after 10. If they tried to have us work thanksgiving nobody would bother to show up at the store i work at, including the manager

Worked at Blockbuster for 6 years, from high school and into college, and I think the only holiday we got off was Christmas. I worked every holiday I could for the extra pay. Hell, even at the well paying job I have now I would work the holidays if they were running for the double time. I won't say "If you don't like it, quit" because some folks can't afford to make that decision. I love my family, but I guess I just don't get excited about a big dinner or a night/morning of gifts anymore. Then again, my job gives us holidays off with pay, so who the fark am I to talk.

I feel nothing but pity for people that spend one of the most important of our annual national holidays...shopping.  It's pathetic.  I have no down that these pathetic people could be convinced by a waving flag and the right bible verse that shopping on Christmas day is exactly what Jebus would have wanted.

I've worked the opening Black Friday shift for a store at the mall, 11pm - 7am. The store opened at midnight so I had an hour to set up what hadn't been addressed at the previous day's closing.  I barely remember that Thanksgiving because I spent most of it attempting to sleep. I woke up long enough to eat turkey dinner and watch some football before I had to get ready for work. What disgusted me is that when I parked at the mall, there was already a decent-sized line of consumerist whores.

My SO currently works in retail and had to take a riot-control class last year. He also had to show up early to help set up crowd-control barricades at the store's entrances.

Oh, and someone up-thread mentioned that retail workers shouldn't biatch about working Black Friday but should rather try and obtain a degree and then a better job outside of retail that offers PTO on holidays. Well, when the economy tanked a few years ago, the main industries that were regularly hiring were retail and food service. I, like many others, took that retail job to get off unemployment assistance. After busting my ass in retail for three quarters of a year, I obtained a better job that requires a degree, that closes on federal or state holidays, and that offers a generous amount of PTO.
