I didn't see Steve Vai, but I heard guitar notes akin to what he plays.

Yeah the fat guy in the sunglasses is definitely NOT Steve Vai, but some of the quick up-and-down runs in the intro were Vai-esque. Also doesn't really seem like Vai's guitar tone.

Also, the electric guitar that can be partially seen during the solo does not appear to be an Ibanez Jem.

The fat guy is Billy Sherwood, prog-rock guitar-for-hire, session player, producer.

If it isn't obvious, The Shat is in it for the lols at this point.  What is he?  80 at this point?  I hope I have his sense of fun and good health at that age.  This is almost as funny as George Takai leading the chicken dance because someone said, "we love you and would like for you to join us" and without having any idea what was going on he said, "for love, I'll do it!"

This is why trek is awesome.  Smart people are funny.

It was 50 YEARS AGO this month that Shatner starred in Nightmare at 20,000 feet, written by Matheson and directed by Richard Donner.

From Guitar World magazine:

Former Star Trek and T.J. Hooker star William Shatner, 82, has released the music video for "Ponder the Mystery," the title track from his new album, which was released October 8.
Although the recording features Steve Vai on guitar, Vai does not appear in the video. The guitarist (and background singer) in the video is Billy Sherwood, the album's producer.
Besides Vai, Ponder the Mystery, Shatner's fifth album, features guest appearances by guitarists Al Di Meola, Vince Gill and Robby Krieger of the Doors.

Has been a favourite for some time.

Vai is one of those virtuoso guitarists who can play incredibly complex material while still making it enjoyable to listen to.

To this day, one of the coolest things I've ever seen is Steve Vai and Billy Sheehan trading solos live during Ladies Night in Buffalo (when they were both playing with Roth). If you haven't seen it, do yourself a favor and look it up.

This is what I was talking about:

Song is really good, but the solos get incredible starting at about the 4 minute mark, and then SHIAT GETS REAL around the 6:30 mark.
