One theory is the weather and flora and fauna changed so rapidly that the Neanderthals couldn't adapt their stubby, short bodies to pursuing fast moving game in grasslands as opposed to stalking it along the edges of forests.

The fact that no intact Neanderthal skeletons exist might help explain their extinction, too. Along with their tasty goodness.
