They need to determine if he stumbled onto the tracks or if foul play was involved.  Don't rule anything out yet, subby.

"The train's engineer told police she saw Jacobs sitting on a piece of wood in between the tracks. When she sounded the whistle and activated emergency braking Jacobs looked up, but did not move. "

Yup.  Suicide.

They have to figure out if he became splattered on the windshield vs cut in half, and if cut in half, along which axis.

Back in my contracting days I did a number of jobs for New Jersey Transit.  One of the inspectors/engineers from NJT that was helping oversee one job got his start as a surveyor.  He once had a project where they had to survey/document all the body parts if someone got hit by a train.

They were hoping to come up with a way of double checking / predicting / proving the speed of a train vs. how far the body parts flew.

I think he ended up having a lot on his mind.

This happens all too often in the LA-San Diego rail corridor and it screws up the commute for thousands of people while the police "investigate". Just write "hit by train" on the form and get things moving again.

Jeeze.

Sounds like natural causes to me.

Asleep on a train track, hit by train, naturally, he died.

I've never figured out the allure of drinking and sitting on RR tracks (whether suicidal or not). If the guy wasn't suicidal, certainly there are more comfortable places to sit/sleep.

I think it would be kind of fun to be a medical examiner because seriously who is going to deny you were right about the pile of meat that got splattered by a train?

"So we found this guy split in half on train tracks. What's the verdict?"
"Testicular cancer."

I want to know what a train was doing with a sleeping bag and a bottle of liquor.

2013-10-18 01:58:43 PM
He might've died of a heart attack out of stress and fear right BEFORE the train hit him.

2013-10-18 01:59:23 PM
Yeah subby, it's more complicated than that. Was he suicidal? Was he completely drunk? Was he on drugs?

Jeez, they had this happen next to the house I lived in in Flagstaff, girl was stumbling down the tracks, saw the train coming, kneeled down and lifted up her hands. Not quite quick enough to stop the train, although she gave it the ol' college try... It still required a full investigation, but they knew "how" she died, just not the "why", just like this story states in the first farking sentence.

/My roommate worked for the local newspaper, so we are the ones who found the body while he was getting photos. Threw the girl at least 100 yards down the tracks.

Not fired through a traditional firearm - that one got mythbusted. Maybe a compressed air type propulsion system could work with a projectile made of ice, though.

Oh please.

When the guy walks right out in front of the train it's obviously not murder.
When the guy stands there and looks the engineer in the eye  it's obviously not murder.
When they have their back to the train, iPod stuck in their ears just a mosyin' down the tracks,  it's obviously not murder.

Yet the police "investigate".

I have to answer phones and direct the calls to the correct person. I also have to take regular morning and afternoon breaks, print badges for visitors and look pretty and be friendly all day.

So how certain does the engineer need to be that he saw the person move before they just tick a box on the form and dispose of the remains? What if he was shot and left for dead on the tracks? What if he was drugged and left there to be splattered? There are investigators for a reason. A guy getting pasted by a train is going to ruin your commute even if they don't send the detectives out.

These suicide by train guys annoy the hell out of me, just two days ago we had one on the North Jersey Coast line that did it at rush hour... had 8 of our trains backed up for 2 and half hours. That's about 10,000 people who couldn't get home to their families. Farking bastards. Two dozen this year so far.

The dead can be very useful sometimes. They've helped me out of tough spots more than once.  First, they don't talk. Second, they can be made to look alive if I manage it right.  And third, if you shoot 'em, there's no worry 'cause they're dead already. Understand?
