middle aged?   are these broads going to live to be 120 years old?

What I worry about with expressions like these is that it further commodifies the "African" culture industry. I think the artist's attempts at opening a dialogue are misguided. Where does actively understanding begin? This seems to be simple voyeurism.

It wasn't pretty before, and it isn't pretty now.

And why only women? If you're going to go uni-race neutral, why not go uni-sex too. And uni-age. Put them ugly cornrows on old balding men.

Cornrows are ugly on anyone, regardless of gender or race.

Beyond safety reasons, who gives a ----? Hair styles and prejudices that they give rise to, have always seemed a true indicator of the observer's level of intolerance. If someone wants to be stylish or ugly (many times they're the same thing) it's their right.

And find a few men who only date women with processed hair and let them feel some chemical burns on their scalps for 45 minutes.

yes it is peoples right to have stylish / ugly hair, yet there are workplaces and schools where they get called out on it. that's the point of the linked article.

I like cornrows & braids on most women and some men.

What I don't like is that so many black women still get their hair straightened or go around with "good hair" wigs & weaves a la Beyonce. Granted that might sound odd from a middle-aged white guy, but it's another example of the gains of the '50s, '60s & '70s being nullified and rolled back.

For 2/3 of my life the quality of society has been steadily declining, to the point where the Obama presidency ("the first Black President!") has been a sick joke. And gay marriage, gay "troops" and letting a couple states legalize marijuana should have happened as no big deal 30 years ago instead of being a few corn kernels in a shiat sandwich, and Wall Street shenanigans like those leading to the 2008 crash should have long been punishable by death if not made structurally impossible.

Age of Aquarius my ass; it's more like the Age of Tiberius.

When I was in high school, several white & Messican girls had their long hair braided in cornrows à la Bo Derek after the movie 10 was released. They actually looked pretty good.

Women can get away with just about anything that's not sexually explicit, and by that I mean anything at the other end of the spectrum. Stretch pants, wacky hair, it's all good, especially if the woman is not "young" anymore and particularly of color or ethnic.

It's the office version of baggy saggy-assed pants.

2013-10-18 12:34:26 PM
I was going to say this project doesn't point out the racism in the corporate world. It just points out cornrows are stupid and no one should have them if you want to make above minimum wage.

Ok. I was confused. I know my favorite baseball player ever has been bald for quite some time and couldn't figure out what those ridiculous hairstyles might have to do with him.

2013-10-18 01:38:28 PM
So the project confirmed that those hairstyles are inappropriate for the office regardless of who's wearing them, meaning that offices can now ban the hairstyles without being racist?
