(Telegraph)   You know you're going to a pretty cool middle school if the teachers let students smoke on the playground because it helps keep the kids from sneaking off campus to smoke   (telegraph.co.uk) divider line 35

Yeah, destygmifying is half-way to dealing with addictions appropriately.  The other half is required counseling for those who those who suffer from them.

If "dealing with addictions appropriately" means "increasing addiction" then, sure.

No, really, it doesn't.  People don't respond to punishment by giving up things they enjoy.  Especially when the limits of that punishment are being kicked out of school, which rebellious kids hate already.

My highschool had a smoking area and had for years and years before that.

We had open campus too.  The during school hour keg parties were awesome!

Intentionally taking the less sensible parsing of a sentence is not cleverness.

How badly does it date me that my high school had two smoking pits... One for students, and one for teachers?

We had a designated smoking area in high school. Of course that's been awhile..

Shadow Blasko: How badly does it date me that my high school had two smoking pits... One for students, and one for teachers?

Yeah, we had two as well - the teachers' was inside. Ours was out back of the cafeteria.

But it was where I hung out even though I didn't smoke because it was the one place the teachers really left us alone. You could play music on a cassette, chat with people from other classes, etc.

Thinking back, middle school did not have a designated smoking area, we had to go across the street. Teachers would join us for a smoke..

2013-10-18 11:07:49 AM
We used to have a smoking tree at our high school, it was 1978 or so but it was one of the huge trees that was out in the open, no hiding, and before school, lunch hour and after school it was surrounded by long haired boys and girls puffing away.
Sometimes the uptight police state society that we've become just pisses me off. Think about all of the decisions we were capable of making for ourselves before the government came along and told us they knew what was better for us.

Graduated HS in 1996... English teacher would randomly give someone an off campus pass to go buy her smokes. And we also had student smoking areas.

Mine freaks when I tell her when I was a kid we had to get up and walk over to the TV to change the channel.

/also had smoking areas in both Middle & High School

I spent six months in Newfoundland, Canada.  The 7th/8th grade school there had a student smoking area.

I guess that makes sense in a "completely giving up" sort of way.

About the same time, myself. You could have a quick puff between classes by walking outside between any of the unlocked doors to the building, by which I mean any door to the building.

Looking at today's paranoia, it's amazing we weren't all kidnapped or killed.

I'm more curious about how 11 ~ 15 yr old kids are able to legally finance such an expensive habit.

THIS IS HOW IT WAS when I was in school. In middle school the "smoking wall" wasn't an official thing, but all the teachers knew about it and didn't do anything about it. In high school, the same sort of designated smoking area was semi-officially sanctioned. If students smoked anywhere but that zone-- when on campus-- they were warned to go to the "wall" if they wanted to smoke.

It worked for all of us. The non-smokers didn't have to put up with smokers in any other areas. The smokers got to indulge in their gross habit. The faculty didn't have to deal with write-ups and punishments for smokers.

But then, this was an era when family restaurants had cigarette vending machines in the front lobby. If you were underage and wanted cigarettes, you could walk into the front area of a Howard Johnson's, Big Boy, Sambo's, or local family restaurant and just pay the vending machine. No one checking ID, no restrictions being enforced.

Honestly, younger people have no idea how easy it was to get tobacco back then. Of course, we have a trade-off today. Tobacco is much harder for minors to get, but nude pictures and porn are infinitely easier to acquire than the were back then. Jeez... In those days it was the Sears catalog or lucking into finding a stash of Playboys, and that didn't happen often.

2013-10-18 12:23:39 PM
Yah, mid-70s, we had smoking areas in HS.  Had to have a permission slip signed by a parent.  Mom signed mine.

/no longer a smoker
//if it wasn't bad for me, though...damn I'd like a 'boro now!

I went to an alternative High School about 13-14 years ago and they had the same policy;  They said it outright: "If we don't let you smoke here, you'll jump in someone's car to drive and have a cig, and well, once you're gone man... You're gone."
