They got lazy Russians. Don Cherry can fill you in why that's a big problem.

The Oilers are working on a bigger record:  fastest elimination from the playoffs.  They've come close in past years, but this year, they're finally gonna do it!

Honestly, at this point I'll almost be happy if they can win at least nine regulation games.  That way, they won't be the WORST TEAM EVAR.  But I'm not getting my hopes up.

Well, if the intarweb rumour mill is to be believed, Yak may be going to the Sabres for Miller and Vanek, so that's something...maybe.

Oilers are reportedly on Millers no trade list.

Sheesh. You'd think they could afford to show the full 8 seconds. What happened that the Islanders lost possession?

Miller won't go to Edmonton, apparently.  Seems like a crazy trade.  I know he's young, but it's a gamble if he decides to be a one-man show and continues to hate everything except shooting the puck.

This is what happens when you draft a ton of talented forwards, but no d-men.

I don't think the Oilers have had a talented defenseman since Mrs. Pronger made her husband leave town after screwing around with that media personality.

Well, everyone has covered off the NTC situation, but I could not think of a better possible ending to this saga.  For the Oilers to trade a #1 overall pick, in his second NHL season, for two guys are are going to be UFAs at the end of the season and almost certainly would not re-sign in Edmonton would be priceless.

If anything would cause Daryl Katz to get over his boys on the bus, '80s Oilers Rule attitude,  such a trade is probably the best chance.  So the irony would be that even though Edmonton would give up a young prospect for nearly nothing, if it led to Lowe and MacTavish's demise in the Oilers organization, it would be worth it.

I would like the NHL to talk about and market John Tavares more. The guy has unreal hand speed and uncanny vision, and he's every bit as good as Crosby and he gets it done on a sack-sack team with no help. He's this generation's Dale Hawerchuk.

How is that supposed to help!?!? The Oil don't need offense, they need defense.

The last team to get a succession of first overall picks in a row kept NONE of them. They traded them away for the parts they needed. The Oilers ought to do the same, although that might not be possible in the salary cap era. Also, no one wants to play in Edmonton.

/Nordiques got Sundin, Nolan and Lindros
//traded for Lefebvre, Ozolinsh and Peter farking Forsberg
///that's half of your Stanley Cup winning core right there

Edmonton would be crazy to give up on Yakupov so soon. More likely this is all rabid speculation as a result of him being benched - which often happens to young players who aren't otherwise getting the message. That said, the Oilers could use goaltending, but for what? Without a defense they aren't contenders in the slightest. Why waste an asset like Yakupov for help that won't be the difference-maker and more likely than not bolt over the summer anyway? And all that is assuming Miller would even consent to going to Edmonton for the rest of the season, which is unlikely. I don't know about Vanek, though his role in such a trade seems tacked on. Not sure Buffalo could get Yakupov without him included, so they may as well if this ever goes past rumor. A better return for their two big stars going into FA than what they got last time with Briere and Drury.

While I completely agree with you on JT as a player, I disagree with your assessment of the Islanders as a whole.

A few seasons ago you could call them that but not so much now. The Isles made a good run last season and put up way more of a fight against the Pens than anyone expected. Tavares is a great player but he doesn't carry the team on his shoulders. More than a few times last season he's failed to produce and the Islanders pulled out a hard-fought win despite it.

I'm an Isles fan, so I'm obviously biased, but I think they've finally managed to put together a well rounded team that doesn't depend on a single skater. For a long long time they were "rebuilding" and have a very young team, but they've been good at keeping most of their players for the past few seasons and you're seeing a maturing squad really come into it's own.

If they over-depend on anyone is Nabokov. They really need someone who can take over the #1 spot between the pipes.

The Oiler's will ditch Eakins before they trade Yakupov, though I don't think he's the problem either.

Honestly, aside from the Vancouver game (shudder) and maybe the Washington game (I didn't actually watch that), they haven't been playing _badly_...they just haven't been playing well enough. They HAVE a defense this year, or should, with Ferrance, Schultz, Smid, Petrie, and Belov should eventually make the adjustment.

Their goaltending needs to get sorted out really fast, and here I think this is Eakin's doing, threatening to bench Dubnyk after the 1st game of the season.  Way to bolster your guys confidence there, especially with LaBaberra not looking even remotely ready during pre-season.

Eakins is the problem I think; coaching an AHL team made up of hungry kids and journeymen who know they won't make the show is a lot different from (what should be) a team of budding superstars.  They're not buying his 'tough guy' approach; I think he's already losing the veterans, and the kids are following their lead, not his.

I both love and hate all the Oilers threads lately. Good because, yay Oilers, bad because it is too easy to take a swipe at them.

Congrats to Hallsy.

Oh hell no.  I half-heartedly wanted the Kings to win the SC that year because my man is a Kings fan.  Usually I actively root against them, just because of '88.
