False. Korn was never relevant.

2013-10-17 11:59:38 PM
Actually saw them live once. A friend worked with a guy who had a box at the Rose Garden, so I got in for free even though I wasn't really a fan. We were so far from the stage that there was actually a noticeable delay between the time I saw a snare hit and the time we heard it. Can't say I was all that impressed. Plus: bagpipes? WTF?

I feel like Korn was responsible for Limp Bizkit.

Therefore, Korn may never be forgiven.

The cycle used to be bubblegum pop, rock, back to pop, then rock - about every 4 years.  This latest incarnation of pop has lasted 11 years because they're smedling everything together.  When's the last time you heard a bona-fide guitar solo?  These days they just use them as riffs or a hook for some harlot to sing over.  Even the hip-hop and rap crossovers are ceasing to exist because they're just being co-opted into pop song interludes.

Meh.  Get off my farking lawn.

I stopped listening to music about 1998.

well...about every 2-3 years I'll bust out my copy of The Best of the Pogues. but that's it.

You don't curl up and die just because a genre gets played out.  Even when it gets really played out.

I think I dropped out of mainstream music around the time bands started to be named after food products. Korn, Smashing Pumpkins, Limp Biskit, Red Hot Chili Peppers, etc. I was more comfortable with bands named after random nouns. The Beatles, the Rolling Stones, the Animals, etc.

Yes Korn sucks and nobody likes them because they are poopy heads. Yet somehow everything they put out sells and they manage to make the top 10 on Billboard. It's almost as if some people like things that fark music snobs do not.

You guys are worse than douchy hipsters in music threads.

2013-10-18 06:28:17 AM
Some of Korn's stuff wasn't too bad.  Sounds like they're going for shock value in this new video, but I can't watch it at work.

2013-10-18 06:28:52 AM
Saw them on their last "small club" tour when I knew only a few songs by them. Great show. Attended an arena show a few years later with Rob Zombie opening. He was better. Now? Not interested in either. Lawn..../have 20 somethings at work who play teen spirit, no rain, and rooster on a loop, and believe this encompasses 90's music. Fools

That sounded a little like old school Korn for a bit right up till the stupid as shiat vocal effects at 1:02...    Korn and Life Is Peachy were decent little albums for the genre..  After that they just tried way to hard and all the music was entirely too clean and over produced..

Bieber, Miley, Britney, do I have to list all the really really shiatty acts that sell enough records to chart?
News flash: a lot of people like really shiatty things.

That doesn't make them not shiatty.

Well they were one of the top bands a decade ago when I was in middle school, and they had some good songs. I guess it's cool to hate them, but then again Fark hates all music, especially if it came out after the 80s (aka the worst decade of mainstream music).

Want to know my favorite thing to do about bands I don't like? I don't listen to them.

Seriously, I will never understand why people get so worked up over music they don't like. Last I heard no laws have been passed forcing you to like them, so why does anybody give a shiat if a band they don't listen to puts out a new album or goes on tour?

Pretty much this. Just listened to the song. Sounds like other Korn stuff, and I like Korn, so I'm enjoying the sound.

Checking my library for Korn, there's a few assorted tracks.

Freak on a leash
Falling Away From Me
Tear Me Down
Here To Stay
Did My Time

They're all alright, though I've not deliberately sought them out in a while.

2013-10-18 07:55:04 AM
In my early teens, my stepdad was figuring out how to send an email attachment. He sent me an email of a Korn video and wrote, "Korndogs Rock!". I cringed for a good five minutes, and never listened to Korn again. Not that I really did, but Freak on a Leash was a fun song.

'Hit me baby one more time' came out in 1999. Britney's career is coming up on 20 years. If you count her start was the Mickey Mouse Club which was 1992 then she has been popular for over 20 years.

I saw Korn back in the day on their debut album tour. I really liked their first two albums. Not so much there newer stuff.

But hey, if it weren't for Korn i would never have heared of Deftones from the onset. So, that's a positive in my books.

The Deftones are farking awesome.

I kinda liked it. I've never been a huge Korn fan, but I've always liked what I've heard. They're definitely not like "the greatest band evar", but still not worthy of all the hate getting posted here.

Rock is basically a niche market now. It's time of mainstream dominance is over. As the older generations that were its main consumers die off, it will continue but more in the way that jazz has, with a much smaller devoted fanbase.

Korn's take on Another Brick in the Wall is the only good thing they ever released. Worlds better than even the original.

'Hit Me Baby One More Time' isn't my cup of tea, but I don't whine on fark on how much I hate it and act like I'm above it all. To be honest its a pretty good song. Let that song and others like it play when there's a room full of women getting their drink on. I'll be the guy watching them dancing and kissing each other. The rest of you sound like you would be the smug hipster that aint gettin' laid.

It's all music people. Hating on the tastes of others does not make you cool. It just makes you a dick that acts like you're better than everyone else.

/likes Korn in small to medium doses
//The older stuff is better
///The new album is not terrible

Lsherm: When's the last time you heard a bona-fide guitar solo?

I have heard numerous times that Nirvana and grunge killed the guitar solo, and I can see why some would think that.  The instrumental and/or solo part of the song just really doesn't exist anymore.  Once in a while you get a somewhat long 'breakdown' in a kind of song people would dance to but that's certainly no solo and more often it's some kind of robotic voice like that new-ish daft punk song.

I am sure there are still more obscure bands who rock out a blazing solo every song, or even dueling solos iron maiden style, but that kind of music just is not popular in North America right now.  It is amazingly fun to play when you're part of that band though.  Even if you're not the solo player you can get so lost in the groove in those parts of the songs (I'm a bass player).

There are few songs that benefit from a guitar solo in metal.  Most of the time, they break momentum or otherwise change things up just to say "AND LOOK AT OUR AWESOME GUITARIST" who then tweedledees for a few moments before they get back to where they need to be.  I think of Behemoth's "At the Left Hand of God" as an example of this.  There's a lot of talented musicians in metal; they just tend to jam in solos where they don't need them.

\black metal tends to avoid guitar solos just to keep the momentum
