No, not awkward. It wasn't even a swat, just a brush off.
He's in public, on camera, the whole room is watching him, and he needs to focus on speaking.
A quick pat on the shoulder is one thing, but how would a 30 second massage have looked?
Or 90 seconds? Or five full minutes? Maybe a quick titty suck right there at the podium?

2013-10-17 10:46:20 PM
Lsherm: Benevolent Misanthrope: Wow.  That looked even worse than I expected.

I watched the full video, and she kept it up for a full 20 seconds before he did the brush off.  I'm not saying he shouldn't have stopped and just whispered "please stop that" instead of the brush off, ESPECIALLY since he's a damn politician.  It was obviously distracting to him and he probably had a handler gesticulating wildly in front of him that her hand was showing up on camera.

It was going quite long with the rubbing (I would've been irritated) but he definitely didn't handle it in the best way. But who gives an eff, he lost.

2013-10-17 10:49:35 PM
Yeah she held her hand there a little too long.  I would have done the same

2013-10-17 10:50:19 PM

Benevolent Misanthrope: His reaction was that of someone being manhandled in a crowd, not a man being comforted by the woman he loves.

I don't know this man, his campaign, or if he's truly a jerk (then I feel bad about defending him), but sometimes that's an apt description of how men feel when we're being "comforted."  If we aren't ready for it at the exact moment you're offering it, then it's like someone is forcing us to deal with feelings we'd rather ignore until later.

I also didn't realize this:

He's blind.

That changes the dynamic a little bit because that might be his method of non-verbal communication, and he doesn't know how bad it looks.

"Caring wife consoles politician husband for longer than handlers thought acceptable" probably would've played better than "asshole loser pushes wife away to yell at black man."

2013-10-17 10:51:06 PM
Yeah, blind. Had no idea who was touching him. And the glare? Probably thought he was looking at the audience. Or a bunny or whatever.

As much as I wanted this to be something, like everything else, it's worthless, man. It's not fair, man.

No-one will remember him, so the gay rumors will hardly matter. That really was the action of a guy who flinches at the touch of a female type human.

I did not. But that video in the article was also the first I had seen of him, I'm familiar with him and the Senate race through written articles.

Lsherm: That changes the dynamic a little bit because that might be his method of non-verbal communication, and he doesn't know how bad it looks.

a little bit?No, it completely changes it.  It goes from a bad moment, to a complete and total non-issue.  He doesn't think about how things "look" so judging him based on how his actions "look" is silly. The appearance of something doesn't mean anything to him  He doesn't anymore conceptualize that dozens of people were watching him, not just listening - and that cameras recorded it for others to watch it - not just listen.

Sorry guys, I'm not a big fan of people molesting me in public either... I get a little personal-space-ish after awhile. Yes, personal contact comes with being married, but that was long enough to make me uncomfortable just watching. Besides, after awhile, it's the same as her licking her palm and flattening your flyaway hair.

Like I said, I wouldn't handle like he did, but that woman needs to back out of the bubble.

Barry Lyndon's Annuity Cheque: You bet your ass he knew the touch of his own wife on his shoulder.

that isn't the relevant point.  He didn't give her a "look" - he's blind.  He doesn't conceptualize that thousands of people are now "watching" him on the internet - how something "looks" is meaningless to him, because he's farking blind.  So even if he did know it was her, it still is a complete non-issue.

I wonder how much that prostitute standing behind him costs.  She's obviously a prostitute, who else could be paid to stand there, smile, and pretend to like this douche bag?

What you did there. I see it. :D

And I should also mention that I'm from NJ. I've known he was blind for awhile. I figured it was the type of thing that would be mentioned about him in at least *some* articles.

Being blind on a stage in a crowded room with numerous people on it, I believe it is fair to give him the benefit of the doubt that he either (a) didn't recognize the breathing patterns (lol) of who touched him or (b) had no idea that it looked harsh and dismissive.

He goes on to glowingly speak about his wife and daughters and how he's about to become a grandfather  later in the video.

I'm not even addressing "the look." He backhanded his wife's consolation away like I do with my dog's paw when she keeps putting it on my leg to go out and I'm busy. Regardless of whether or not you're blind or sighted, you know what it means to backhand away affection. She wanted to offer support, and he wasn't having any of it.

That's not something that being blind absolves. He treated his wife like shiat, and I feel bad for her.

I will now actively campaign against him even though I do not live in New Jersey and he's already lost and conceded.

Name_Omitted:  Lsherm:  Anyway, I'm glad there weren't cameras around when I snapped at my wife.  Because I'd live on in the internet like this asshole.

I'm going to say there is a bit of an exception for funerals.  At least I hope so, because I essentially did the same to my wife at my Grandmother's funeral.  Same general scenario, talking with a funeral director, the whole bit.

Still felt like a heel long after she forgot about it.  Still do.  I hope she has forgotten about it...

Guys, that's really mild, especially at a funeral, where one expects some edginess and emotionality.
And I wonder if you're projecting a little.
Seems to me that men get more upset than women about touch rejection. (or that could be just the culture I grew up in.)

True story:
Me: "Argh! Why are you always hugging me from behind? I can't hug back!"
Hub: "'Because the pointy bits are on the other side. This is safer."

I don't think he's completely blind, but has bad enough eyesight to be considered legally blind. He wears glasses, so he must be able to see something. He's just a jerk.

I Havent Killed Anybody Since 1984: If he is blind, why does he (appear to) keep glancing down at prepared notes on the podium?

Because he's legally blind and NOT totally blind.  He's got retinitis pigmentosa, which means that he doesn't have peripheral vision or is able to see in dark environments.  He can still read and see out of the center of his eyes, but not out of the sides.  So, it's not an excuse for being a douche toward his wife.

Explanation of what retinitis pigmentosa is and its effects.

He really ought to be taking into consideration the fact that his potential constituents CAN see despite him not being able to himself.

It's the over and over thing... I think it also goes hand in hand with the fact that although I can be a real Chatty Kathy, when it comes to personal stuff, I tend to be short and concise. Not a real good result ad a kid when I needed comfort and stuff, so I think I adapted... A less is more thing.
