He's mad because the wife dressed his daughters in the dining room drapes and used the money he gave her for dresses on Twinkies.   "Begone bovine biatch and take all eight of your chins with you!"

The dude  never had a chance in hell of winning.

I'm fine with Chris Christie's call to hold a special election after the death of Lautenberg. But here in NJ the Republicans are pissed that Christie didn't exercise his right to appoint an interim senator, which could have created an incumbent Republican senator in NJ when the next regular election is scheduled.

Christie is shrewd for a Fat Guy....he didn't want to be on the same ballot as Booker because he knows it would hurt his chances of being the first Fat-Ass president in over 100 years!

The fun part about all this is there are several conservatives in NJ (ie Paul Mulshine) who are blaming Lonegan's loss on the shutdown.

Because if the shutdown hadn't happened, Lonegan would have won.

Thing is, while that move might have made him good with instate Republicans, moderates and Dems would have hated him for it.  And it would have cost him his reelection.

Not sure what your question has to do with the article. The only Christopher Street I know of was a kid I went to school with from k to 10 until he moved away to have a better chance of being noticed by a college for his basketball skills. It paid off he was signed by the university of Iowa. He was an outstanding player but was killed tragically his junior year when his car got hit by a snow plow at an intersection.

Benevolent Misanthrope: Wow.  That looked even worse than I expected.

I watched the full video, and she kept it up for a full 20 seconds before he did the brush off.  I'm not saying he shouldn't have stopped and just whispered "please stop that" instead of the brush off, ESPECIALLY since he's a damn politician.  It was obviously distracting to him and he probably had a handler gesticulating wildly in front of him that her hand was showing up on camera.

I think I've only done something like that once to my wife - we were meeting with the funeral home director for my sister's burial and she started petting my head like I was a cat because it was such an extremely stressful event for me and for her.  We were going over details about how to handle her body and all I could think was "why is she petting me like I'm a goddamn cat?"  I'm sure she thought she was helping, but it just made everything worse because it made it harder to focus on the task at hand, and even worse it made me think she was deliberately drawing my attention to her instead of the funeral director.

I didn't go for the physical brush off, I just snapped "stop that!" and she didn't talk to me for the rest of the day.

Maybe it comes down to physical touching as a show of support.  When my wife is down she wants some contact, but if I'm in a mood I'd just like to be left alone, or at the very least not touched until I process whatever the hell is bugging me.  I think men are just shades above your typical animal, and if an animal is hurting it withdraws and attacks anything that comes near it.

HOWEVER, there is always the blowjob exception.  You'll note that wasn't in play here ;)

Anyway, I'm glad there weren't cameras around when I snapped at my wife.  Because I'd live on in the internet like this asshole.

It looked like he was going to. The brush-off was bad enough, but the glare made it much worse. His reaction was that of someone being manhandled in a crowd, not a man being comforted by the woman he loves.

I'm sure Lsherm was right, and there was much more to it. But... Man. That was bad.

That said, his daughter is pretty cute.  Was she adopted?

He is.  It's an open secret here in north Jersey.

No, not awkward. It wasn't even a swat, just a brush off.
He's in public, on camera, the whole room is watching him, and he needs to focus on speaking.
A quick pat on the shoulder is one thing, but how would a 30 second massage have looked?
Or 90 seconds? Or five full minutes? Maybe a quick titty suck right there at the podium?

Benevolent Misanthrope: His reaction was that of someone being manhandled in a crowd, not a man being comforted by the woman he loves.

I don't know this man, his campaign, or if he's truly a jerk (then I feel bad about defending him), but sometimes that's an apt description of how men feel when we're being "comforted."  If we aren't ready for it at the exact moment you're offering it, then it's like someone is forcing us to deal with feelings we'd rather ignore until later.

I also didn't realize this:

He's blind.

That changes the dynamic a little bit because that might be his method of non-verbal communication, and he doesn't know how bad it looks.

Lsherm: That changes the dynamic a little bit because that might be his method of non-verbal communication, and he doesn't know how bad it looks.

a little bit?No, it completely changes it.  It goes from a bad moment, to a complete and total non-issue.  He doesn't think about how things "look" so judging him based on how his actions "look" is silly. The appearance of something doesn't mean anything to him  He doesn't anymore conceptualize that dozens of people were watching him, not just listening - and that cameras recorded it for others to watch it - not just listen.

He goes on to glowingly speak about his wife and daughters and how he's about to become a grandfather  later in the video.

I'm not even addressing "the look." He backhanded his wife's consolation away like I do with my dog's paw when she keeps putting it on my leg to go out and I'm busy. Regardless of whether or not you're blind or sighted, you know what it means to backhand away affection. She wanted to offer support, and he wasn't having any of it.

That's not something that being blind absolves. He treated his wife like shiat, and I feel bad for her.

Seems to me that men get more upset than women about touch rejection. (or that could be just the culture I grew up in.)

True story:
Me: "Argh! Why are you always hugging me from behind? I can't hug back!"
Hub: "'Because the pointy bits are on the other side. This is safer."

I don't think he's completely blind, but has bad enough eyesight to be considered legally blind. He wears glasses, so he must be able to see something. He's just a jerk.

I Havent Killed Anybody Since 1984: If he is blind, why does he (appear to) keep glancing down at prepared notes on the podium?

Because he's legally blind and NOT totally blind.  He's got retinitis pigmentosa, which means that he doesn't have peripheral vision or is able to see in dark environments.  He can still read and see out of the center of his eyes, but not out of the sides.  So, it's not an excuse for being a douche toward his wife.

And why bother wearing glasses?

He really ought to be taking into consideration the fact that his potential constituents CAN see despite him not being able to himself.

It's the over and over thing... I think it also goes hand in hand with the fact that although I can be a real Chatty Kathy, when it comes to personal stuff, I tend to be short and concise. Not a real good result ad a kid when I needed comfort and stuff, so I think I adapted... A less is more thing.

Barry Lyndon's Annuity Cheque: IamAwake: Barry Lyndon's Annuity Cheque: You bet your ass he knew the touch of his own wife on his shoulder.

that isn't the relevant point.  He didn't give her a "look" - he's blind.  He doesn't conceptualize that thousands of people are now "watching" him on the internet - how something "looks" is meaningless to him, because he's farking blind.  So even if he did know it was her, it still is a complete non-issue.

It's degenerative and leads to full blindness, and since he was diagnosed at 14 and he's like 60 now, his eyesight is well and gone.

I could count on both hands the number of times I was kissed by them as a child probably. I haven't hugged my brothers in years.

Casual physical touching and affection just doesn't occur to me as a result. It is almost always a conscious effort thing. As a result though my siblings and myself make sure to hug and kiss the wee ones a whole lot, but again it's a conscious thing.

And I can react in the way that he did when annoyed with touch. I'm sure I'm not the only one. I simply make sure I *never* do it with the wee ones. My niece is a cuddlebug, and I'm glad for it. :)

Not when you've just lost a public election, there's cameras all on you and you have to get through a speech without a) crying, b) shouting, c) calling your opponent a racial slur, d) all of the above.

Not everyone copes the same way. He might actually be an asshole, but don't call him one just because he doesn't react in an emotional moment to your personal tastes. By that same evidence (by this I mean: flimsy) we could convict her for picking on him.

People are different. He was visibly uncomfortable and his wife (either by sympathetic error or deliberate act) exacerbated it. Either way I'll save my outrage for another story.

I feel bad for her, too, but I think it's just a matter of different people (women and men) having different approaches in a situation like this. After what seemed like forever while he was trying to talk, he was irritated and wanted her hand off of him. He couldn't stop his speech to tell her, "Stop touching me! Gah!" so he shrugged her away, without realizing how it would look (to us, to the people there, to his wife ...).

I'm female, and I'm sure his wife understands. Women tend to get a little touchy-feely. Sometimes guys really don't want that. Sometimes women need to be a little more respectful of men's preferences.

Wow, this thread certainly didn't take long to reach 'Mitt Romney's handkerchief' levels of stupidity. Being a Republican, he must also eat crackers like an asshole too, amirite?

Mikey1969: Sorry guys, I'm not a big fan of people molesting me in public either... I get a little personal-space-ish after awhile. Yes, personal contact comes with being married, but that was long enough to make me uncomfortable just watching. Besides, after awhile, it's the same as her licking her palm and flattening your flyaway hair.

Like I said, I wouldn't handle like he did, but that woman needs to back out of the bubble.

you must have grown up in a loveless home full of no affection like my dad did. took him 50yrs to open up finally.

That's the face of a woman who has understood for a while that her husband doesn't love her.

She still tries, but she's not important.

Lifetime movie right there

He and Booker have something in common. They don't appreciate the loving touch of a woman.

2013-10-18 07:42:38 AM
Honestly, not that big of a deal. She was distracting him with the rubbing while he was trying to get a speech done, there isn't any other way to handle that really than a quick 'nope, don't do that'.

His wife should have really known better not to do that on camera, but in the end, it's not that big of a deal.

Plus, I totally don't see "the look" that everyone is on about it. Don't get me wrong, Lonagan is a douche, purely based on his teabagging platform, but c'mon guys. Character assassination over this little shiat is the kind of stupid hysterics Freepers get up to.

Historically, there have been many Republican politicians who aren't assholes.

OMG, I agree.

This was hard to watch, because I've been in her shoes.  My ex would have behaved the same way in such a situation.  Always trying to get away from me in public.

This scene could have really energize the Tea-Party base if it had happened before the election.  It would have made a fantastic TV commercial.  First show the brush off, and then the voice over, Steve Lonegan: His pimp hand is strong.

Nothing says "Get you biatch ass back in the kitchen and make me a Sammich" like that public gesture.

The correct response would be pause, give her a hug, and say "Ladies and gentlemen, this is the woman that makes life worth while."

Response B would have gotten him quite a bit of sexy time.

Since he went with response A, for the next few months he's stuck with a bottle of lotion and the current issue of Glamour on the end table. Or a rent boy, IDK.

He's got to be the most unluckiest farker in the world.

The vote happened right at a moment in history where everyone in the country knew what dicks the GOP has become since 1980.

2013-10-18 09:37:30 AM

IamAwake: Barry Lyndon's Annuity Cheque: You bet your ass he knew the touch of his own wife on his shoulder.

that isn't the relevant point.  He didn't give her a "look" - he's blind.  He doesn't conceptualize that thousands of people are now "watching" him on the internet - how something "looks" is meaningless to him, because he's farking blind.  So even if he did know it was her, it still is a complete non-issue.

So you're saying that blind politicians are too stupid to be able to consider how things look?  Or just this particular blind politician.

Lsherm: Maybe it comes down to physical touching as a show of support. When my wife is down she wants some contact, but if I'm in a mood I'd just like to be left alone, or at the very least not touched until I process whatever the hell is bugging me. I think men are just shades above your typical animal, and if an animal is hurting it withdraws and attacks anything that comes near it.

My husband and I are the same (only reversed). I fell down on the ice one year and he reached down to help me up and I snapped at him "Don't touch me!". I had to explain (repeatedly) later that when I've hurt myself, I need to remember where my body is, and adding more parts confuses the heck out of my stupid brain. He (and our son), on the other hand, want instant touch. It's cool, just hard to get used to.

Honestly I don't think there's enough in the video to make any real judgments. Maybe he's an ass (well actually he probably is, but YMMV), but most likely that was a horribly tense moment and both he and she acted sub-optimally for that time, place, and emotion. I'm not going to judge them based on that.

//oh, right.

There's a shortage of sane women. Sorry.

I'm all for equal rights and I think women are capable of great things, but on the whole we seem to have been socialized to be farking crazy. I keep trying to think of a woman I'd introduce to two of my guy friends who are awesome... And I come up blank. Every interesting single woman I know is crazy. Every stable woman I know is married (interesting or not). So it MAY be that you're mean, smelly, and boring, but I doubt it...

I don't think so. I think he's more likely just a cold jerk who never likes any physical contact.

grumpfuff: The fun part about all this is there are several conservatives in NJ (ie Paul Mulshine) who are blaming Lonegan's loss on the shutdown.

Dude, the thread already wound down. You're a little late with your threadshiat.

Because, you know, we're clearly mocking him for being blind. It couldn't possibly be for the disrespectful way he handled that, instead of a calm "Not now, honey."

Right. He clearly didn't he was surrounded by his family.

And by the way, if you had bothered to read the thread, you'd see I was one of the people who pointed out he was blind, and that I didn't think it was that big a deal. A bit rude, maybe, but hardly anything worth getting upset over.

But please, go on assuming you know exactly what I think.
