Too dumb didn't read.

I've been shouting this for a week now. The low information voters- the GOPs base- is going to conflate the roll out snafus with the shutdown.

And as people have another several months to sign up, and the process is working more smoothly, it will seem that the GOP planned the shutdown to coincide with the start of the ACA, just to be petty.

2013-10-17 04:39:00 PM
This will come in handy when the Dems take back the House in 9 years.

2013-10-17 04:42:54 PM
Yup. They went into this figuring that the country would look around during the shutdown and say, "Hey! Look how much better off we are without all this regulation holding us back!" Instead, what they got was a sinking realization that there are precious few people whose lives the government has only a negative impact on- pushing a million out of the US workforce was suddenly effectively out of work and far more simply not getting paid for the duration despite having to work, sending shock waves through the much larger communities that where they live and shop for example. I would guess that almost if not every single person in the country knew at least one person who was either furloughed- be it because they were government employees or in a job dependent on them- or working without pay- and it's much harder to demonize those government leeches when you realize they're your friendly neighbor who helps clear the snow from your driveway in the winter or your daughter's best friend's mother. Even the whole overblown national parks/monuments shutdown circus probably worked as much against them on the whole since all but the derpiest had to realize that regardless of how the GOP tried to paint it as Obama trying to be petty that ultimately they'd have been open were it not for the government being shut down.

Well, "88" is Neo-Nazi code for "Heil Hitler" (H being the 8th letter of the Alphabet)...

Maybe this is some homage to the creator of Dungeons and Dragons, Gary Gygax?

You do have to admit, the more extreme members of the Republican Party do seem to have a gift for tactical timing.

Oh I see what you meant. I thought you meant the forced the shutdown based on Obamacare because the ACA was starting (which also was the start of the fiscal year). Right they didn't set the date, but the did set what they were going to demand because of the date.

You may not like the messenger, but the message is hard to argue with - Cruz not only failed, he handed Obama a huge cudgel with which to beat the whole GOP.

I'd go further and suggest that this is the beginning of the end for the TP as a political force. The GOP at large finally recognizing that TP costs them more votes than they gain, and they have to be squashed.

Whether that means taking them on at primaries, or even sacrificing seats by running vote-splitting Independents, they have to be stopped, or the GOP will be trampelled.

No, it isn't. The Tea Party doesn't think they lost because Obama just outright beat them straight up. The Tea Party thinks they lost because their leaders caved. The message they've taken from this is to be even MORE uncompromising and to actually drive off the cliff.

It's 90 days until the next time the government shuts down. I expect that one to last long enough that agencies have to start RIF procedures.

President Obama played the shutdown masterfully. It was a civics lesson and he showed everyone exactly how much Federal government was really in their lives and how much it affected them. This whole government is incompetent and evil meme the Republitards had going just got beaten down.

I mean if the US government is so incompetent then why are we the richest most powerful nation on Earth? Incompetent governments look like Spain, Italy, or Greece not the US.

2013-10-17 06:11:59 PM
Honestly, nothing will be lost or gained long term from this debacle. Americans attention spans in general are short. Unless there is another government shutdown a month before the next elections this won't be a issue.

I'm sure the Tea Party will try to do that as well. But will the Republicans who ended up voting for the bill yesterday let the inmates take over the asylum again? We can hope, but I am too cynical about how deluded the Teabaggers are now.

I give the Dems two weeks. Three tops.

I think the Tea Party is a mass of closeted something-aruthers wanting to come out to anyone who will pay attention to their emotional needs.
