Hey guys, let's change the state motto to the Amazon website for The Christmas Sweater.

Well, their slogan is "Proud, Positive, and Progressive." So if you remove Progressive, that still leaves Proud and Positive. Which are equally as alarming. "Positive," to the vast majority of people, is shorthand for being HIV Positive, which generally means AIDS, and I don't for the life of me understand why the board would want to imply that. And "Proud" is clearly a reference to gay rights. I think these people clearly need some time with an image consultant.

Good thing they didn't go so far as to include the word science somehow.

You really should contact them about this.  These are important issues.

Next up, changing the University of Kansas "College of Liberal Arts and Science" to "College of Freedom Engineering and God".

They should go with "Republican, Religious, and Round." It would be a better fit for these times.

Right-wing commentator Glenn Beck has made the word a favorite cudgel to use against any person or politician he believes is not adhering closely enough to an anti-government, libertarian orthodoxy

Because we can see how well it works out when banks and insurance companies are deregulated.  It's just like paradise.

Rotund, retarded and regressive?

"Regressive" is a bit harsh.  I suggest "stagnant" .

Amazing sometimes to think the Kansas used to be a hotbed of progressivism.

Sure, you laugh, but the nutjobs that call talk radio believe that a liberal arts college is a place where people indoctrinated (because no one would willingly choose) to be liberals.

I am curious how long  "Proud, Positive and Progressive"  has been used as a slogan for the schools.

Does anyone know?

"Rape, Murder, and 1990" might be available.

Don't they realize it's a word that can be used to mean just about anything you want it to mean? Hell, it used to mean sterilizing the "inferior" and banning alcohol.

2013-10-17 02:50:51 PM
If you think about it, "retarded" can be used in several different ways, which all fit Kansas.

A quick Googling shows no reference to the motto until this hullabaloo. Don't see anything on their DoE site either.

It appears the slogan was created specifically for this post card campaign.

So, after spending the past three decades turning the word "liberal" into a filthy derogatory word, they're all butthurt over the new term "Progressive" and want to try to have that banished as well?

2013-10-17 03:35:59 PM
"Conservative" demagogues like to redefine words so they don't have to deal with facts, ideas or reality any more. It's a five and dime store version of Newspeak and Double Think.

Progressive, an inherently positive word formed from progress, a positive thing, is out because the Republican Party ceased to have any contact with progress in the 1960s during the flip-flop that turned the party of the right wing Dixiecrats over to the minorities, while the erstwhile Northern and progressive bourgeois Republicans purged themselves of moderates and liberals and went South literally and figuratively.

Liberal, which means generous, another word which itself comes from a root meaning "people" in the aristocratic sense, and thus has long represented the qualities of character and mind befitting a gentleman or lady, has been turned upside down so many times by equating it with every evil (including the economic liberalism of Adam Smith and the social and political liberalism of the bourgeoisie versus the reaction and proto-fascism of the aristocracy) that it is almost as meaningless as conservative, which used to mean penny-pinching but means nothing of the sort in Congress today.

Beck constantly rides out on school yard rhetorical hobby horses to do battle with the Windmills of His Mind using the demented and trivial rhetoric of cracker barrel populism as his weapons.

See blackboard for details.

Trashing the English Language is the first step to reducing politics to grunts and squeals that make the pigs of Animal Farm sound eloquent.

The only good thing about Newconservaspeak is that everything goes down the memory hole so fast nobody has to remember last week when the monster threatening America and all good and right things was something completely unrelated to today's terror.

2013-10-17 03:36:52 PM
Glenn Beck is so right-wing he got kicked off Fox.

That tells you how politically farked Kansas is if there's support for this kind of social phobia.

After what happened to to word "liberal," I don' think it'll be quite as easy for them to make "progressive" a universally bad word.

It already has buzzwords like "higher taxes" and "socialism."

They've already farked with it.

So the slogan was created by Republicans so the Republicans could complain about it?

They should just remove "progressive" on principle because the KSBoE is anything but. Their ideas on education are RE-gressive, if anything.
