That's on a relative scale.  If you actually go polcy for policy the Canadian conservatives are about where the Democrats in the US are.

Is this as bad as when the White House wanted to exclude Fox News from the news pool for interviewing "Executive Pay Czar" Ken Feinberg? Reasons why "this is different" go below.

That's not really true anymore. The Alliance-ized Conservative party is pushing right pretty farking hard.

"...a new low for the Ottawa media elite"

Are they trying to sound like the Tea Party? Is that the image the Tories really want to project? Now? Right after the whole US shutdown/debt ceiling debacle?

Hmmm, so this is the type of governing that Ted Cruz brought to the table. Coincidence? I think not.

I haven't been following Canadian politics much but did hear about Trudeau.

Is he finally getting the Liberal Party out of the funk it's been in since that scandal and are they finally in a competitive position against the Conservatives?

I really don't get why they would want cameras in a caucus meeting.  As for the reporters, they'll get lots of opportunities for questions after the throne speech is read.

Turning the media into simply broadcasting what was said is the goal of Conservatives. Just broadcasting what was said is important because it allows the lies to take root and eventually flower. Asking questions, fact-checking, and holding liars accountable for the lies they've said needs to be destroyed for Conservatism to spread.

Just look at what the US media has become the results it's had on the knowledge of the average citizen.

Not anymore. The Tories really are ideologically closer to (and have ties to) the GOP now. Harper has repealed environmental regulations, defunded science, uses "do they allow/enable/provide abortion" as a criterion for foreign aid/NGO funding, wants to expand the military and cut everything else, is rolling back public campaign financing, is incrementally privatizing healthcare, pushed through a crime bill that even some Texas GOP strategists said went too far, declared unionized flight attendants "essential service" workers and ordered them back to work when they tried to strike, has total contempt for First Nations, the media, the UN, and anyone else that dares to criticize him.

Oh, and before Keystone approval got dropped from the list of demands on the House CR, he confidently told a right wing business gathering in NYC that "we won't take no for an answer".

Plan A: Effect a sea change in the public perception of the party, own the Senate scandal and right the ship on course towards cleaning up pork and patronage.  Do so through the media attention given to a throne speech.

Plan B: Ban the media, do not mention the controversy all Canadians are aware of, blame the media and or the intellectual elite, announce that the big news is about cheaper roaming rates for Canadian cell phone users.

The Canadian wing of the GOP believes their own distortions of truth, they are not just trying to manipulate the media anymore, they are crying foul when the "media elite" do not simply accept the bullshiat they are pandering and act as messengers for the part talking points.

There will not be a conservative majority in the house for many years to come.

They already knew that he wasn't sticking around after the throne speech. He had to get ready for his flight to Brussels.

Well it's true.  Go to a doctor in Canada.  Do they ask for your visa card?  Nope.  Can you still get an abortion, and using your provinces health care? Yup.  I have no problem accepting that Harper and many of his ministers would go the direction of privatizing that service if they could. But they don't, because they know it would be political suicide.

Or take gay marriage, when the courts made it legal Harper ran on a promise of putting it up to a free vote in the Commons.  He did that, gay marriage, as expected survived and he's done nothing since to go back and try to eliminate it.

As far as Keystone he knows it will be a long term benefit to the country, for every barrell of oil that goes through that pipeline royalties will be paid.

Would I be surprised if the Liberals took power back in the next election? Nope, but I do hope that they don't go too far to the left once they are in either.  The Conservatives have had a long run, just like the Liberals before them.  Maybe it's time for a change.  Wouldn't surprise me if that Harper is defeated in the next election that Saskatchewan premier Brad Wall becomes the next Conservative leader (most popular premier in the country the last couple of years).

How does the media's refusal to report if they weren't permitted ask questions constitute being assholes?  Because they've refused to be the subservient lapdogs of a secretive government?  I view it as having principles.  And the government's disingenuous spin is par for the course.

I voted conservative in the last election and I regret it.  I have never heard so many half truths spouted by a government as I have from this one.  I am looking forward to their loss in the next election. Harper will be gone and it will be interesting to see how the party weathers a leadership race between traditional Progressive Conservatives like Peter MacKay and Reform Conservatives like Jason Kenny.
