I love how unabashedly geeked Plait is about this.  I know that this is a smart man and a really deep scientist, but it's fun to see how he just drops all that and says "HOLLY BATS!  THAT'S JUST REALLY COOL!"

Not any more... Radio shack is just a smaller version of Best Buy nowadays, but back when I walked to school through 6 feet of snow uphill and against the wind in both directions while barefoot you could have.

FTA: The detail is incredible.

Maybe if the dude used TIFF-LZW or PNG as his image format.  But the darker areas are suffering from some serious JPEG compression artifacts.

Yep.  And I was one of the people who transmitted to it using Morse code via ham radio.

This was to see if the WAVE experiment could hear the collective transmissions on the 10 Meter band.  I don't know if it was successful, though, because the spacecraft went into "safe mode" during the close encounter.

I first spotted the moons of Saturn on an ideal viewing night, down on the Gulf Coast of Florida.  With a pair of good binoculars.  New moon, no clouds, and not much ambient artificial light.  People thought I was tripping when I said so.  Which may or may not have been true, but this became a moot point when I passed the binocs and advised others what to look for; and exactly where to look.

How timely.  I'm watching Oregon Field Guide (the story on the Mt. Hood glacier caves) and telling my husband that if you were on Mt. Hood you'd look at those boulders and say, "Holy fark, those are huuuuuuge boulders!" but from my house, 50 miles away, you can't even see those boulders...and on the face of the earth, Mt. Hood is but a tiny speck, and in the solar system, Earth is just a speck, and in the galaxy...

He said, "Have you been smoking pot?" and I said, no.

But then this gorgeous photo of Saturn, and man...maybe I ought to go out and find some pot.

/I did have a couple of glasses of wine, though

Do you know that when you look at a planet, and you see that light, that planet's not even there. That's just a light. That's just your neighbor shining a flashlight into your yard. Looking for coons. And he says "What are you doing in my backyard? With that flashlight?". And i told him "I'm shining it in your window to teach your son about the universe". He said "Get out of my yard, and why are you communicating with my son? Why are you in all black, behind my bushes shining a light into my house?" And i said "I'm teaching your son about the universe. I'm shining a light right in there and exploring his room as he's looking out and exploring the universe. I turn the light off and i see your son go to bed. I turn the light back on and do swirls on his wall like a comets tail. I do this every night with your son"
