Skleenar: Personally, I think the GOP might have won if they had been just a little more conservative on this issue.

Just throwing that out there.  Thoughts?

Agreed.  The GOP failed conservatism here, not the other way around.  I think the RINOs in the Senate and especially Boehner the secret lib let down the true American's like Ted Cruz.  The undercover socialist's fooled us once but we won't get fooled again!

FoxNews.com has gone back to using "shutdown" instead of "slimdown" - now that it's over and the GOP got their asses handed to them, I guess it was a bad thing.

DarwiOdrade: Who would want Boehner as a lobbyist  consultant? He's gotten absolutely nothing of consequence done during his tenure as speaker, unless you count presiding over and losing two debt-limit fights.

FTFY.  Remember, there are no lobbyist anymore.  Just consultants for grass roots advocacy organizations of like minded Americans looking for common sense from Washington.

Ricardo Klement: Weaver95: I think the first hurdle the GOP faces is admitting that they lost in the shutdown fight in the first place. I've seen plenty of republicans who are convinced that the shutdown was a win for their party.

That's not the impression I got from reading last night's posts on John Boehner's FB page.

I think you're missing the nuance of the Republican position on this.  Don't worry, a lot of you libulardos do.  See, this tragic defeat was a huge win for the GOP in that it showed them standing up against tyranny, except for the traitorous scum that run the party.  This victorious tragedy will only serve to galvanize the true conservatives against the American hating Republicans and Democrats and rally real Americans to the cause of freedom under the banner of a Republican party strongly united in the sacred necessity of tearing it apart to get at the backstabbers.

Cyclometh: FTFA:  Will the GOP finally understand that when you touch the stove, it burns?

No. No, they will not. If recent history is any guide, the GOP is totally insane, out of touch with even the most basic facts, and completely impervious to logic.

Given their history, I have no doubt they'll hit themselves in the head with the pan then threaten to toss a couple of aerosol cans in there if they don't get their way.

James!: I saw a former Republican rep on MSNBC last night claiming that this was a win for Boehner because he had to let the teapartiers shut down the government to secure his position.  24 billion is what his security cost us.

Maybe next time this happens, we could just offer him, say, 1/4th of that? $6 billion in-before you lead the world to the brink of a economic catastrophe? If China and Japan were willing to kick in $1 billion each, that would leave us with only a $4 billion tab.

Seeing as how teabaggers are sooooo concerned with excess debt, they will rejoice at this less spendy approach, no?

The GOP's problem right now is lack of message, people are very willing to be against things, but it turns out that "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" isn't actually true. The Democrats quickly realized this when they ran Kerry under the "anyone but Bush" strategy in 2004. They thought it would be enough to not be the disliked guy. They were wrong. People need to see what they are voting for as much as what they are voting against.

So far the GOP's strategy has been "Obama bad" but hasn't come close to vocalizing what they think "good" is. This doesn't work, and they haven't realized it yet. It especially doesn't work when you are stopping people from doing their jobs.

GOP: "This is wrong, we shouldn't be doing this, and I will stop you!"
America: "We don't like everything that's going on, now you have our attention, what should we be doing?"
GOP: "Uh, not this!"
America: "Right. Got that part, but right now you're making it worse. What should we be doing?"
GOP: "Obama bad!"
America: "Yeah, we're done with you now."

The problem is that they, themselves, don't know what they stand for anymore. This won't spell the end of Republicans as some say (they'll retain the name) but I'd be surprised if the party platform doesn't change dramatically in the next decade.

1.  In January, "moderate" Republicans will block the Tea Party from trying this stunt again.

2.  In outrage, the Tea Party will eventually split from the Republican Party.  While that seems like a good thing, it's actually not...

3.  That will create three viable parties, with the Republican Party in the middle, to occupy the "centrist" label. Longterm, it will shift all mainstream political discourse further to the right, putting Democrats on equal "extremist" footing with the Tea Party. To be considered centrist, one would have to be Republican.

HMS_Blinkin: bdub77: HMS_Blinkin: Diogenes: Even if you're against the ACA, if you're intellectually honest, your criticism should be over their farking ridiculous strategy to attack it.

$24 billion+ failed strategy.  Well done, teabaggers.  Really well done.

The GOP/Teabaggers are a football team that just decided to punt on first & goal.  And now they're high-fiving each other for their brilliant tactic.

That is a terrible analogy. So by your logic, destroying the US and world economy is now considered the equivalent of "touchdown"?

I don't think that.  The teabaggers think that defunding Obamacare is a TD.  Get it?  They had this big goal of somehow defunding or repealing Obamacare, which was a stupid goal.  But their tactics were even more idiotic.  They failed to accomplish their goal, they got a worse deal than what they would have gotten if they'd just accepted the Senate's CR back in September, they increased the federal debt (that thing they claim to care SO MUCH about) unnecessarily by $24 billion, AND on top of all of that everyone hates them.

Granted, I'm not sure where destroying the economy falls in a football analogy.  Maybe they have the ball at 1st and goal, but they've threatened to dynamite the whole stadium and everyone in it, including themselves and their own fans, if they don't score their TD.  But instead of running plays, they let the play clock wind down and get called for delay of game penalties and they finally punt, and Obama returns it 100 yards for the TD.

Is that better?  Maybe there isn't a good sports analogy here, but it made sense to me at the time.

Just watch a Purdue football game and you'll probably find a good analogy there. Two words: train wreck.

All I know is, despite the tremendous effort of MSM to paint this as a "both sides" issue, and some serioulsy impressive leaps of logic to further that fantasy, the GOP still ended up losing this, the Democrats still stood firm, and public opinion went the direction that it rightfully should have.

Shame on the media though, for promoting the bothsidez thing through all of this. The fourth estate has completely abdicated its responsibility to the public in regards to accurate reporting and informing. It would do them well to realize that recognizing and reporting the real causes and actors/parties furthering these issues and breakdowns is not biased reporting, it's just reporting. Blaming the GOP doesn't mean you're a shill for the DNC. It means the GOP are acting like a bunch of dumbshiats, and they need light shined on them to prevent them from acting that way. The media as it currently stands are the only ones with that light, and they are just hell-bent on casting equal amounts on both parties.

False. It will create one viable party and two smaller parties fighting over the bigger piece of 47% of the remaining voting population.

In the short-term, yes. I worry how such a scenario would play out over the long-term. After 10 years, I suspect that more would drift to the seeming "middle" choice, marginalizing both Democrats and the Tea Party.

It's too hard to categorize every political movement in sports. The best rules of thumb in sports form I can say are:

- Run with the ball: like I say all the time, politics is momentum. It doesn't matter if what you're doing is fair or unfair, just or unjust; if you have the ball, your job is to run with it until someone stops you. That explains the majority of most political theater, from Ted Cruz to even the PPACA's passage.

- Don't out-kick your coverage: obviously, you can't just run by yourself. Don't throw your allies under the bus and exceed what your momentum will allow.

- Don't f*ck the towelboy: Just don't.

If they expelled the derp brigade, why would that be such a bad thing?  Or does something about having a R next to your name make you intrinsically evil?

if they expelled the derp brigade they'd still be a party that is bad for the poor and middle class, they just wouldn't be insane while carrying it out.
