Mostly because it was being scammed.

Never really played the football version but I LOVED Mutant League Hockey

Looks like they were releasing it on too many platforms. They should have just had iOS, and made the goal 100k, with stretch goals for other platforms.

"$70,000 in business expenses such as licensing fees."  It's a zombie/mutant football game what are you licensing?  $325k in salaries!?  How many devs do you need fulltime for this game?   Sounds like a scam, $150k and you can't make a PC version?

2013-10-17 09:54:47 AM
I'd totally buy that. Mutant football was about the only football game that wasn't dreadfully boring.

So much for my idea of a kickstarter to remake Brutal: Paws Of Fury with the AKI wrestling engine.

Oh, and needing $145k for "fees"? Something's wrong there.

Have you ever made a game in your life?  iPhone was a dumb choice, kickstarter games section is infested with pro-PC people, but programmers and skilled 3d artists are expensive as heck.

That's because the football game was based on some shiatty engine like Joe Montana QB Club '94 or some garbage.

ML Hockey was based on one of the greatest hockey videogames of all time, NHL '94 ('95?) and as such, it rocked face.

ML Hockey is right next to X-Wing/TIE Fighter on my list of games that need a reboot.

Because all games have to be AAA titles right?  I've played some decent looking indie games that I'm sure didn't cost much to make.

If people can show me exactly what they're going to be needing and why, I'll consider it.  Assorted "fees" and bloated salaries don't get money.

\reminds me of the FARKer who wanted a few thousand bucks to write a book

AAA titles cost 8-9 figures, but sure, keep complaining about 6.

They could easily make the game for 300k, but they put up a goal of 750k which made most people assume there is no way that they will get the funds so why invest when you are going to get nothing in return.  Then they choose to make it for just about every platform out there which is silly.

When i see things like this i have to wonder how many people involved in most game development take way too long to do what they're supposed to and demand thousands of dollars a week. Something is definitely a bit off.

Yeah I thought about that after posting that it was probably for an older madden engine since it would be stupid to develope their own.

THIS!

I've been using Unity since 2008 and it's just a total joy to work with.  Just released my 2nd game a week ago and it's #53 on the Google Play Top New charts today. Yehoo!

I loved MLF when I was a kid.  I didn't even know there was a Kickstarter for this.

BUT, even if I did, I'd have been wary of it. Shadowrun Returns was asking for $400k, which was a hefty goal (that was broken in a day), but that franchise had a history behind it with a big fan base.

$700 seemed like an awful lot.  I agree with others that there was some scamming involved.

I loved that game on Sega Genesis. They really need to make a game like that. And, by that I mean: Based on American Football, not rugby like Blood Bowl.

I would get it, but that $1500 for the pro license is too much for me, and I'm not interested in subscribing for $75/mo.

You don't need PRO at all.  The free version supports PC, Mac and publishing to all the mobile platforms.  The only thing it would cost you would be the developer fee for the app stores ($99 for iOS, $25 for Google Play, Free for Amazon, Free for B&N Nook, Free for Blackberry, Free for Windows (Metro and Mobile).  Price is absolutely not a barrier.

I own PRO licenses for all those platforms and sometimes I wonder why I bothered.

While I can't wait for Ghost of a Tale, that's kind of an outlier. Lionel Gallat used to work for Dreamworks and Universal Studios animation, maybe you heard of Despicable Me or SharkTale or The Lorax. He's insanely skilled at what he does, and he's been doing it for a decade and a half. That doesn't excuse this horrible excuse for a kickstarter for MLF though.

Sometimes hundreds of people can't produce quality as fast. Still seems like there's a lot of dead weight.

And there are games out there being solo developed by amateurs which aren't too shabby.

2013-10-17 11:22:56 AM
They really didn't get enough publicity for it, which is a shame.  I put in $5, which is what I'd expect to pay for it in a Steam sale, so if it falls through I won't be mad.

/they should have stuck to Steam and mobile platforms, then worried about console platforms

Just checked and the banished guy isn't quite so amateur. But still, i don't see how it would be possible for one person to so easily do what takes large teams of people to do, unless the people on those teams are really, really, bad at their jobs.

I, too, will THIS these comments. Nothing more satisfying than blowing up the demon gate goalkeeper... or just slaughtering the entire team to make a permanent 5 on 3.

It really does feel like a throwback to the days when 2 guys in a garage could make an entire video game. Unity and all sorts of middleware have brought it full circle and it's probably the best thing to happen to gaming in a while.

I don't know why SEGA didn't continue the Mutant League franchise into other sports. Mutant League European football, basketball, etc. But nope... They stopped and never touched it again.

This was the first I head of this project, and I might have considered it. However, a lot of comments here make sense--- That was an awful high goal, and it seems kind of full of shiat.

It was an American thing. Sega tried to get away from that before becoming the worthless company that they are.

Yeah, first I've heard of this. If I recall correctly EA looked into rezzing the franchise several years back but said there wasn't enough interest to continue. And like many of you, I agree, 750k seems like a bit much, considering Shadowrun Returns wanted 400k initially. And way too many platforms.

Mutant League Football was fun, but only a challenge if you had fatalities ruin your active roster. Mutant League Hockey was alright; its best moments were looking at the spoof of the real-life names of players (Eric Desjardins on the Canadiens = Desfarten on the Cadavers).

Games that need reboots: Interstate 76, TIE-Fighter franchise, Crusader No Remorse, and since someone here mentioned the Jane's games ... I'll go older and say Strike Fleet or Red Storm Rising.

/subby, and it's my 50th greenlight out of 200 or so submissions ... yay me.

150k will get you two average devs or 3 new ones, tops. That's not including anything but just having them in the building. Forget licensing, ads, etc. 1 excellent dev would easily take the lions share of the 150k for 1 year salary
