Leave her alone! She obviously doesn't want to be found.

2013-10-17 09:23:28 AM
How would she have been able to find a remote Pacific island without being able to see or hear?

2013-10-17 09:24:29 AM
I  heard she had crabs. Or was it the crabs had her?

That headline would incur the death penalty in several nations for being so bad.

If we can find here, so can the Nazis.

Nevermind the logistics involved in escaping Nazi Germany.

Crazy talk. The Goo rescued her and she lives with the Whaley-boys now.

She was a crappy pilot who was diddling her navigator and an attention whore.  Most over hyped woman ever, makes the Kardashians seem reasonable.

Both of my parents are pilots, and it was my mother, who back in my teen years when they were doing some "find Earhart" show on TV (80's) told me what a crappy pilot she was, years later I decided to do some fact checking and yep, mom was right.

We have to find where she died so we can put up a wreath of flowers for a fly by memorial.

That might be overstating things a bit, but she is overrated.  Jackie Cochran was from the same era and held numerous aviation records at the time of her death.  She was arguably the best pilot of her generation.

Not best female pilot.  Best pilot.  In the world.  But she's not as remembered because we know where her corpse is, I guess.

I've wondered why Cochran is forgotten. She was a true pioneer and excellent pilot. Back in the 60s I watched her stunt an F8F at an airshow at Seymour-Johnson AFB. She pulled a hammerhead stall at low altitude that made even my Old Man (5,000+ hours in everything from PV-1s to F-4Ns) gasp. He had a higher opinion of her than many of the Blue Angels he worked with.

Also forgotten: Bessie Coleman.

You obviously have never flown an aircraft.  Navigation has improved but the basics of low end aircraft are the same. A good pilot from the 30's would be a good pilot now.

But your Momma's opinion trumps all, doesn't it?

\she may not have been as technically proficient as Yer Momma, but she was a pioneer nonetheless

Could she play a mean pinball?

2013-10-17 11:28:54 AM
she did not want to learn morse code even though pilots still need it today.
so when she had trouble with voice(am radio) she could have gotten through with morse code(cw) so the last "words" would have been heard. i thought pioneers did things that were hard and not take the easy way out.
i got a kick when one tv show said she was the first woman to circumnavigate the world....oops.

Heh - we were stationed at MCAS Cherry Point for most of the 60s and early 70s, the Ol' Man had enough pull to stay in one place. We headed up to S-J AFB on a regular basis because in those days, the "dependents schools" on base only played other base schools - S-J, Pope, Bragg, Lejeune, etc., plus the private schools, which in those days were the Catholic schools.

I mention this because it was a common thing for kids to have "unofficial" cheers at those ball games. For you guys it was "Fark Seymour, and fark Johnson too." Plus there was a Catholic school in Jacksonville called Christ the King (now Infant of Prague) so our cheer was of course "Kill Christ the King."

S-J is a ghost town now, I think they only have one fighter wing left. Goldsboro has shrunk as well because of that. Used to love going up there to watch the B-52s fly. And they used to fly down to Cherry Point for "dispersal drill" and park those things on the tarmac outside Officer's Country, where I could see them from out back porch. Always thought those were gorgeous aircraft.
