Obama's made multiple speeches comparing the GOP to extortionists, petulant children, hostage takers, etc. He's not wrong, but this article is spun from whole cloth. The dynamic it talks about doesn't exist.

I applaud the Democrats for standing firm.  Obama finally gets it, Reid showed real leadership, Pelosi kept the pressure on, and Biden hung out in Bermuda for a few weeks drinking mai tais.  Good job all around.  Oh, and Speaker Boehner...

Credit where it's due- Mitch McConnell showed that, when he absolutely had to do so, whether or not it's what he really wanted, at the point of a bayonet, that there are some GOP legislators still capable of acting like statesmen.

As was pointed out by someone yesterday, the Senate is a totally different animal than the House. Senators have to (FSM forbid!) listen to all their constitutes.
The House, through dirty tricks and taking advantage of natural population distributions, can effectively ignore most anyone of the other party. Most of these incumbents will be reelected with 60+% of the vote, so the minority in their districts don't matter. Only if someone from their party attacks them in the primary for not being X enough.

Can they remove his speakership before the term ends, or do they need to wait until the next Congress (post-2014 election)?

I like how Weiner  is evil because he resigned of "sex scandal" (where he never even had sex). I wonder how he feels about the Republicans who had actual sexual scandals who never resigned because of them.

TEA PARTY REPUBLICANS Never start with the head, the victim gets all fuzzy. He can't feel the next-
TEA PARTY REPUBLICANS See?
OBAMA: You wanted me. Here I am.
TEA PARTY REPUBLICANS I wanted to see what you'd do...and you didn't disappoint. You let WW2 vets down. Then you let people get no public services. Even to a guy like me, that's cold.
OBAMA Whant to make a deal?
TEA PARTY REPUBLICANS Those fools want you dead so they can get back to the way things were. But I know the truth: there's no going back. You've changed things. Forever.
OBAMA Then why do you want to shutdown the government?
TEA PARTY REPUBLICANS (Uncontrollable laughter) Shut it down? I don't wanna shut it down. What would I do it? Go back to ripping off old people? No. No. No! No you- you complete me.
OBAMA You're garbage who sells themselves for money.
TEA PARTY REPUBLICANS Don't talk like one of them, you're not. Even if you'd like to be. To them, you're a freak. Like me. They just need you right now. But as soon as they don't they'll cast you out. Like a leper. Their morals, their code; it's a bad joke. Dropped at the first sign of trouble. They're only as good as the world allows them to be. You'll see- I'll show you. When the chips are down these, uh, civilized people? They'll eat each other. See I'm not a monster, I'm just ahead of the curve.
OBAMA  Wand to approve the healthcare reform?
TEA PARTY REPUBLICANS You have these rules, and you think they'll save you.
OBAMA I have the Constitution.
TEA PARTY REPUBLICANS Then that's thing you'll have to break to know the truth.
OBAMA Which is?
TEA PARTY REPUBLICANS The only sensible way to live in this world is without rules. And tonight you're gonna break your one rule.
OBAMA I'm considering it.

palelizard: Can they remove his speakership before the term ends, or do they need to wait until the next Congress (post-2014 election)?

Yes, but . . . (source)

A Speaker may be removed at the will of the House, and a Speaker pro tempore appointed.

A resolution declaring the Office of Speaker vacant presents a question of constitutional privilege, though the House has never removed a Speaker. It has on several occasions removed or suspended other officers, such as Clerk and Doorkeeper. A resolution for the removal of an officer is presented as a matter of privilege.

There is, however, a catch. Speaker Boehner may presently be the highest ranking Republican in Congress, but speakers are elected by the entire House - not simply the majority party. A resolution removing Speaker Boehner - most likely because of a Tea Party revolt seeking to replace him with someone even further to the right - would require either overwhelming support in Boehner's own caucus or collusion with the Democrats.

Boehner led a coup attempt against Gingrich that failed.

Sarah Binder of the Brookings Institution says the closest any speaker came to getting yanked out midterm was Republican Joseph Cannon more than a century ago.  And that failed.
