There are funny black women. Just not a lot. Thus not being a lot that means the chance of there being being black women on one show will be very low.

/I don't find women that funny in general.

I actually watched the Miley Cyrus episode recently because someone on the interwebby talked about how she could act AND sing and I figured with all the kerfuffle and twerk twitterage and whatnot I should check it out.

That is the LAST got damned time I ever take anyone's advice on the interwebby.

Also, this guy seems to just deliver all his lines by yelling them and then putting on this "ain't I cute" expression like some little brat that just screamed out his ABCs.

He's truly awful an has no business talking about comedy.

P.S. I think I just tore something in a fit of pop-culture flatulence.  I'm just pissed that nobody subscribes to my blog.

Why the outrage? Black women only make up about 6% of the population. Why must they have a token black woman on SNL?

identity politics is so much fun!

I think all of this hem and haw is just farking sad. When SNL does hire a comedienne of color she will undoubtedly be treated as an affirmative action hire, whether it's true or not.

and Kenan did not say "black women aren't funny" he said when they had auditioned they "weren't ready." i i know that's not as outrage-enducing as what the press has been saying about this issue but, hey, that's the American press (and the American people, for that matter)

and there are plenty of funny black women (Retta, Wanda, Whoopi, Sherri, to name a few). They may not be your style of humor (or mine, necessarily) but I've laughed at all of them at one time or another.

I always thought Ellen Cleghorne did well when she was on the show.  Some of it was hit and miss, but with that cast, she was one of the least annoying.

Raven Symonewhateverthehell had pretty good timing and ability to pull a face before she tried to go Queen Latifah music idol then disappeared.  Speaking of which, Latifah has pretty excellent understated and deadpan delivery doing comedic work (not quite outright comedy but still).  So that kind of shoots down the 'lololol loud and sassy isn't funny' crap.

There isn't any widespread outrage. Why would you assume that the inclusion of a black female cast member would be a token?

I'm guessing they make up even less if you look only at the population of comedians.  Maybe I'm wrong, but I get the impression that the majority of comedians are male.

Assume that 4% of comedians are female and black.  Then if you take a random sample of 16 comedians, there is a 52% chance that there will be no black females.  The chances are even smaller if an even smaller fraction of the top comedians happen to be both female and black, though I do not know if that is the case or not.

This is, however, ignoring the fact that it may be desirable to make an extra effort to have at least one person from that particular demographic for various reasons (both to inspire young black girls to go into comedy and so the show has someone to portray Michelle Obama in sketches).

It might also be the case that black female comedians are in demand because they are rare, so the good ones already have stable jobs and thus aren't applying to be on SNL.

The idea is that they find talent that is hardly established.  People that are on network television already generally don't want to reverse course(where you go on SNL to get in to TV and movies).  And, realistically, Kenan isn't far off point. Head to a local comedy club or improv establishment and you 1) don't find many women 2) don't find many minority women.  Hell, where's the outrage for finding a Mexican woman?  Asian?  Anything?

EyeballKid: Why would Jessica Williams leave a superior show to join SNL?

You're saying that as if Daily Show is a sketch comedy show.

When this term includes Caucasians, such as Nasim Pedrad, how can it have any meaning any longer?

The security guard on The Wayans Bros. kind of reminds me of her. I never liked her on Amen; but she was pretty funny on the Wayans show. Also, Kim Wayans is pretty funny. Keenan used to bug the hell out of me when he first joined SNL (never watched Kenan and Kel); but his Ray Lewis impression is funny. I think being a female African-American comedian is probably tough because you're so easily pigeon-hold, or more importantly, tempted by low-hanging fruit. Most of the ones I see have the same kind of schtick.
