Driving is a skill that can be taught.  That doesn't mean you'll be any good at it.

The training for a lot of stand-ups these days seems to have been "Listen to Bill Hicks' albums and just do that."

I do not understand Leno's huge success, I mean, he seems like a nice guy, and I love cars as well, but how did that guy become so successful as a comedian since he's not funny at all.

Two guys who teach a class on performing standup comedy actually think that people can be taught how to do standup comedy? This is quite shocking.

That's the thing, the guy in the article says at first "I can teach you to be funny" and then "if you use these techniques, you will be funnier"  emphasis mine; not funny, but funnier.

you can put lipstick on a pig and give 'em TF for a month, but you'll never succeed in making a new TMLO.

/.. because TMLO doesn't wear lipstick, you see.

Also listening to a bunch of WTF-podcasts from Marc Maron, so much of the 'deal' with being a pro-comic is not just having tight bits but reading the room and handling them.  Who am I following and what kind of stage energy do they have; do they compliment me or do I need to transition?  Who are the trouble-makers in the crowd and can they be shut down?  Who are the people without arms, maybe I shouldn't make jokes about them not clapping*... stuff like that.

/*that totally happened to that dude.
//he apologized afterwards.

I missed the part where they presented the "research".

So here's the science: A guy teaches a comedy class at a college. Therefore, comedy can be taught. (Says the guy who teaches the class)

SCIENCE!

Agreed. I never liked him when he appeared on Carson's show and stopped watching once he took over. I still check in now and then but am always disappointed. Ellen is another one whose comedy acclaim escapes me. I just never thought either of them were funny.

Leno said something in an interview about having "non-threatening humor" and his success on a mainstream late night show makes sense considering his target audience is near retirement. There is nothing edgy about his humor so it is easy to cast him as an entertainer more than a comedian hosting a talk show.

Well of course it's dumbed down and safe, but topical.  It's mainstream TV, and guests that matter aren't going to want to be on a controversial show.  Carson was no different.  Conan got less edgy as it grew closer to him taking over as well, which is why Conan gets real celebs now rather than Norm every 3 weeks.

Chakro:

Yes, Carson was different. Carson was funny.

And he was successful in an era where All in the Family could grace the airwaves with things people wouldn't think of hearing today without a call to the FCC and when standup comedy took a decidedly vulgar turn with people like Carlin, Pryor, and Dangerfield.  While Carson wasn't vulgar himself, he had a lot more leeway, particularly establishing an audience in an era with a 3 or 4 major broadcast networks in a market.  Leno has wit and humor, but he plays it very safe.  His audience is a reason for that.  If you want edge, you have to wait until Craig Ferguson comes on nowadays, and even that isn't so edgy.

I remember the writers' strike. He wrote his own stuff and his wife edited it. Funnier than the usual stuff on the show, of course.

/He used to be a great standup, but then he "made it" and that was the end of any edge he ever had.

Basically just make jokes in a few different categories, which are:

How much it sucks to fly nowadays
My ex/significant other
My dog/cat
A minority group that is currently culturally acceptable to mock

/Profit!
