Why would the lottery be dependent on the federal government?  It's not a federal lottery, is it?

2013-10-16 12:11:24 PM
There wasn't a human face to this crisis until this very moment.

If lottery winners can't claim their winnings then it's time to strike the barricades and let the overthrow flow.

labman: Why would the lottery be dependent on the federal government?  It's not a federal lottery, is it?

Its probably something more like a Federal office processes or audits the payouts.

2013-10-16 01:48:17 PM
I see no problem in letting the government take a few extra days to pay.  Just think of it like a pay day loan and charge 150%, 200%  annual interest

2013-10-16 01:48:32 PM
It's a real government shut down, isn't it?

If they had just waited a few hours before they hit the publish button this would have been a non-story.

Read up on how the "city" of Washington D.C. works. It's not like other cities. It's a "federal" city, basically.

This is just another example of Obama's failed everything.

I believe the DC city government (including lottery) is basically an arm of the federal government.

It'll give this person a few days to think about how to carelessly blow through this financial windfall.

Make the most of your time waiting to collect: Hire a reputable lawyer, explore your options in investing, make a plan and quit your whining,

In other news: DC Lottery has the laziest slogan ever, we'll have more on this story when the shutdown ends.

2013-10-16 02:04:46 PM
So they have no problem taking your lottery money while everythings down though.

Wait somebody seriously got paid to type:

WASHINGTON -
If you play the lottery in the District and win - you won't be able to collect right away.

D.C. Lottery can't pay winnings until the federal government reopens.

You can still purchase tickets at lottery retailers in the District, you'll just have to wait until Congress can reach a deal to see your cash.

I mean WTH kind of standards do we have that this can pass as an "arcticle".

Which perfectly explains why everything in DC is so crappy: roads, public transportation etc etc etc.....

Would the 30% withheld from the prize cover the admin costs of paying out?

I think reporters are writing stories just to collect ad revenue.

The standards are directly dependent on how many ads can be squeezed between the lines

That's crazy.  If you can't pay out then you shouldn't be selling the tickets.

I was thinking the same and in the back of my head since the shutdown I was thinking since the federal govt is shut down then why the hell should we pay any federal taxes, maybe the lack of money would motivate them to resolve this faster. Its a dream of mine.

This is just further proof that large portions of the gov't are unnecessary and wasteful.   If the most important thing a news organization can come up with is that the Lottery office is closed, something's wrong.

Peter Freuchen was both an Arctic explorer and a journalist. This piece wouldn't pass his standards. The world needs more like Peter Freuchen.
