Seattle: cop learns to hang drywall

*shrug* At least hanging drywall is a reasonably useful skill. I've never seen "street lingo" in a job description.

This sounds a lot safer than hanging shingles on the Death Star.

My cousin worked Oakland PD for a few years, and saw very little "action". He moved to Vancouver, WA, and shot a bank robber within his first 6 months. I know, cool story, bro.

WTF is a prevailing wage? And it is obvious this story did not happen in a right-to-work state.

"Trained as a drywaller"? Trained? wtf. Who the hell needs training to hang sheetrock? Even Mexicans can do it, FFS

Proof we need to get rid of unions.  All they do is keep honest employers like this one from earning a profit!

The cost of living in Seattle is insane as well. A house that would cost me 65 grand in my area would cost 10 times that in Seattle.

You've got to be kidding me. I'm in the building industry and have been for years. If there's two things you don't do yourself it's drywall and insulation - because the people that do it for a living are really farking good at it. Now I've hung plenty myself and I'm actually ok at it. It's not brain surgery. What those guys are is fast as lightning. If I were doing, say a bedroom, those guys would be on the way back to the truck with the second coat drying by the time I got done hanging the third sheet. And don't get me started on the taping. I wish I had a dollar for every hour I spent sanding for a carpenter who though he knew how to tape drywall back in the early days. Rule #1 - make the taper sand his own joints - he will become good very quickly.

When I read the headline I thought: "Oh, getting in with the drywallers to find out where they are getting their meth?"

I used to be amazed at how the various subs and trades liked different drugs - you could almost predict what they'd be doing in the Port-o-San. Masons tended to drink cheap beer and throw the empties under the foundation. Painters smoked pot like it was going out of style. Drywallers and mudders did meth or speed. Roofers were crazy to begin with, and I noticed a high percentage of religions zealots among the roof crews.

Contractors tended to be "handle men" - they drank liquor from bottles with a handle.

FTA: "Representatives said they had received complaints from drywall installers who were putting in 17 or more hours a day, seven days a week and were being paid $50 to $100 a day."

$3 - $6 without overtime on 17 hour days? fark that scumbag, I'd nark on him too.

/Drywall is a biatch.

FTFA: Investigators ultimately deemed Williams one of the most egregious offenders. According to charging papers, he paid workers a fraction of the wages they were due while reporting workers who complained to immigration authorities; two of the men were deported after demanding their pay.

Aaaaaand that's why plutocrats lurv themselves some illegal immigrants, and why immigration reform will never happen.

I've always thought that employers underpaying their workers should be heavily penalized by charging them with evading taxes, specifically the payroll taxes due the government.

There is a mighty truth spoken here. Also: if the plumber's a drunk, he's gonna have a bad time. If the electrician's a drunk, you're gonna have a bad time.

IIRC, Gravino set up some kind of construction business as a method to launder money but ended up enjoying the work his company did, picked up legit contracts, and was quite proud of some of his work.

Yeah I can hang drywall but the pros make me look like I am standing still. Plus I still need dads help. I have been getting better though since I have had to patch the drywall in my place a lot. Stupid pipes!

Huh. Never caught onto any of that, though I'm not surprised at all.
Of course, it wasn't a career for me, just summers during college. And I was sorta the boss's son, my dad was the Realtor working with the money man and hooked me up with the job with the contractor. They always liked me since I'd work my ass off 'cause I didn't want them to think of me as such.
Though at one site, we had a guy on one of the framing crews who used to crap in the house when they finished the framing.

Either that, or some parents are really into giving their kids obscure Bible names. (Dathan and two other Israelites - with their families - were swallowed up by the earth for sinning, during the 40 years in the desert after fleeing Egypt. It's in Numbers, chapters 15-16.)

MrBrownNow: WTF is a prevailing wage? And it is obvious this story did not happen in a right-to-work state.

Prevailing wage is an amount determined by the federal government to be the appropriate level of pay for a job where you're either building or demolishing. It's suppose to be for seasonal employes like construction workers and it accounts for things like health insurance and vacation days, which part time workers don't get. It only applies to government contracts to keep people from underbidding jobs and has severe reporting requirements. So the contractor wasn't paying his guys what he was required too and saying he was, that was a really bad idea. See Davis-Bacon Act.

It was always fun to call up a sub contractor and tell them their bid was too low and that they had to pay their workers more.
