(Politico)   The GOP story of angry WWII vets "Storming the barry-cades" at the WWII memorial has one tiny flaw: it isn't actually true. Park Service employees have had instructions, since day one, to move the fences and allow veterans access to the monument   (politico.com) divider line 85

Why didn't the GOP storm the closed MLK monument across the street?

2013-10-16 12:10:35 PM
If there are park service people working there then why even have the fence in the first place?

2013-10-16 12:12:05 PM
When has not being true ever stopped the GOP from saying anything?

BiffDangler: If there are park service people working there then why even have the fence in the first place?

Likely because they are a skeleton crew and cannot maintain the place against regular levels of tourist traffic.

BiffDangler: If there are park service people working there then why even have the fence in the first place?

Because Veterans of a war are assumed to not wreck the monument with garbage unlike the tourists that normally come through.

You mean to tell me that it was all staged political theater by the party who was responsible for closing the memorial in the first place?

Are you also trying to tell me that the people who actually believed the "OMG Obama closed it because he hates veterans and wanted to make republicans look bad" narrative are complete idiots?

You don't say.

But, but... I heard from a guy who knows someone who once worked with this dude with "connections" that there's a document in place that is a directive from the President himself to make life as difficult as humanly possible for the citizenry.

Oh, well, if the Politico says it isn't true, it must not be true!  Because the Politico is so unbiased and all...

I really love this argument: Obama is required to shut off all non-mandatory or non-emergency spending, but the fact that public entertainment locations aren't considered mandatory and emergency in his mind is proof he's just putting the screws to your average American. I mean, I can understand if they were pointing to SNAP cuts as evidence of Obama "punishing" people for the shutdown, but somehow that isn't a problem since the people making these claims believe food stamps are a scam used by moochers and not Real Americans (who all regularly plan vacations to national parks in October, I'm sure.)

2013-10-16 12:32:05 PM
Yes, but that kind of narrative isn't going to get checks written to SarahPAC.

Clearly Obama is going to use his Time Machine to go back and stamp "APPROVED" on Hitler's application to the Vienna School of Art so there's never is a World War II -- that's how much he hates veterans, he doesn't even want them to exist!

Who are the Republicans going to exploit in 20 years when all the WW2 vets are gone?

2013-10-16 12:42:58 PM
I'm so sick of all the crocodile tears over vets possibly being barred from these closed monuments. Even if it had happened, so what. Yes, it's sad, but there are about a million priorities more important in this whole catastrof*ck than a vet not getting to see the WWII monument.

But..  But.  I was told there was a memo instructing all government workers to make this as painful to the public as possible with orders for park rangers to push any veteran they see on crutches to the ground.

2013-10-16 12:52:41 PM
But the important thing, subby, is that they feel that it could be true.

It'll be fun to see how successful the GOP will be in spinning their cutting of vet benefits over the years as something the Democrats did.

Meanwhile VA personnel are being cut but dammit those tourist attractions are important!

2013-10-16 01:18:49 PM
I still think the President should have held a press conference at the memorial as soon as the whining started. Give a passionate speech about how the shutdown impacts everyone and these veterans are denied access to something that honors their sacrifice.

Then look at the barricades and proclaim, "Mister Boehner, tear down this wall". They would absolutely lose it and the entire debate would shift into how disrespectful Obama is and the veterans would figure out that the GOP only wanted cheap political props.

The GOP story of [right_wing_outrage] has one tiny flaw: it isn't actually true.

When is this not true? My derper uncle re-posted an infographic on Facebook this morning that claims we're in 3 wars. ??? I know he didn't put it together, and I'm not going to argue that gas is more expensive now than it was at the beginning of Bush the Lesser's first term, but come the fark on, man.

I normally don't say anything, but I actually asked him what the other two wars were. He has yet to respond.

So tired of the outright goddamn lies. Spin is one thing, but these are just raw lies being repeated often enough to "become" truth.

Or maybe the explanation is the one that's blatantly obvious to anyone who has worked anywhere that serves the public. You know, that they had a skeleton crew there to deal with bare minimum keep-sh*t-from-falling-apart maintenance, but not the staff to responsibly function while open to the general public.

But whatevs.

Suddenly? You should have just started out assuming we'd screw the pooch on caring for them, history proves this to be the far less disappointing and realistic attitude to have :(

As a disabled vet, I would have much rather had them close down every vet memorial with chains, padlocks, and barbed wire, if we could have gotten a guarantee on benefits payments during shutdown/default.

I haven't heard of many vets bemoaning memorials being closed down.  Myself, and many other vets have had quite a few sleepless nights wondering if we were going to be able to pay rent next month.

Coco LaFemme: Wellon Dowd: Who are the Republicans going to exploit in 20 years when all the WW2 vets are gone?

Oh, they're already exploiting Vietnam vets. And 'nam vets aren't exactly young. The youngest possible 'nam vet is about 56 years old today (The war ended 38 years ago, an 18-year old soldier then would be around 56 today), and based on the ones I know personally, a majority of them are a good ten years older than that. In 20 years a Vietnam veteran's average age will be around 86.

By then they'll be exploiting the Iraq I and II vets.

2013-10-16 01:44:43 PM
NPR had a story about two weeks ago that an exception to the closure was for free speech us and that the vets were already classified as being a free speech activity.  But it made for some mighty fine outrage

Dude does that actually mean something? Hell, I created my account just a couple years ago don't know exactly when I'm sure you'll find out, but I've been reading the site since about 2002. Never understood why people think posting on someone created their account some great riff, anyway of my two cents.
