Submitter, this article is already out of date. This was yesterday before the Baggers torpedoed their own House bill. They couldn't even make a bill like that for their own House to vote for, much less the Senate.

Not Rafalca!

Tea Party:  O RLY?

"I am," Fleming said when asked if he's willing to forgo raising the debt ceiling without a delay to Obamacare. "Technically, it's not possible to default because there's always enough revenue to cover the interest. If we defaulted it was because the president chose to default, not because we ran out of money."

"Defaulting is no big deal, but if we do it's all N0bamma's fault!"

Fark you, Debt Ceiling Truther.

I guess he has a point; you can't refuse an offer that is never made.

As everyone knows, Rafalca is an anagram for "a la FARC" aka Las Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia, a leftist paramilitary group famous for funding itself through kidnapping for ransom.

Rafalca is thus clearly a not-so-subtle slap in the face to all True Conservatives, for what could be more ridiculously socialist than a dancing horse named after a Colombian leftist drug gang?!

Ann and Mitt Romney clearly were liberal plants from the beginning, which brings me to the truly insidious nature of Obamacare (née Romneycare!) in that this bastion of probortion, death-panelled faffery will truly inflict the greatest harms possible to our beloved nation, ending all freedoms forever.

Study it out.

Yours in Christ,

Senator Ted Cruz

There's an actual interesting question here - given the very serious problem with HealthCare.gov, what kind of actual offer could be made to entice Obama to delay the mandate a year. There's a plausible offer to be made there, I think. I just doubt the GOP will ever make it.

Increase taxes on the 1%, stop obstructing bank regulation and confirm all outstanding appointments.

That would get you an extension of the registration period to the end of June 2014, or three months after the major bugs get worked out whichever is longer, so people don't get nailed for something that isn't their fault.  Oh, and they have to have created an account, plus submit a trouble ticket that couldn't be resolved.

Delaying the individual mandate is actually never on the table except when offered full single payer, with the government covering insurance industry losses until the single payer program is up and running and the primary medical insurance industry is shut down.

Yes, also perhaps immigration reform.  Josh Barro had an idea like this a few weeks ago for a huge grand bargain which would be deficit neutral:

Here's what Democrats would get in my version of the grand bargain, with 10-year deficit effects in parentheses:

Public option in the Obamacare exchanges based on Medicare rates. (-$150 billion, per CBO score estimating -$15 billion per year as of 2020.)

Limit the value of tax deductions for high earners, along the lines of previous Obama Administration proposals. (-$423 billion)

Comprehensive immigration reform. (-$197 billion)

Use the chained consumer price index to set tax brackets, with the effect of imposing a modest across-the-board income tax increase. (-$110 billion)

Partial rollback of sequestration spending cuts (say +$500 billion, but adjustable.)

Government reopens and debt limit is raised substantially.

And here's what Republicans would get:

Repeal most of the tax provisions in Obamacare, including the medical device tax, income and capital gain surtaxes on high earners, fees on insurance premiums, the tanning tax, and the employer coverage mandate. (+$666 billion).

Partially offset this by replacing the Cadillac tax on expensive health insurance plans with the Bipartisan Policy Center's plan to limit the tax exclusion for employer-provided health insurance (-$262 billion).

Note that the individual mandate stays, as it cannot be repealed without hampering implementation of the law. Increase child tax credit by $500 per child per year. (+$300 billion)

Romney-Ryan-style Medicare reform: Have traditional Medicare and private insurance plans bid against each other and require seniors to take the lower-cost option or pay extra. You can think of this as a "private option" in Medicare to offset the "public option" in Obamacare. (This is the most difficult provision to estimate as the Ryan Medicare plan has never been properly scored, but my placeholder figure is -$300 billion. Other Medicare-cutting approaches can be added if the target isn't met.)

Use chained CPI across various spending programs, with the effect of modestly cutting Social Security benefits and various other programs. (-$216 billion)

Thank you for that serious view.  One thing I note is that the Democratic Party "goodies" result in a decrease in government spending of several hundred billion over the period while the Republican side increases spending.  I find their message and reality has diverged here.

Now we just need a truth in political advertising law.  I know, I know, I must be mad to think that will happen.

If any of you don't know, Mario Lopez did NOT write The Godfather.

It was written by Mario Cuomo.

Wait. No. It was written by Marco Rubio.

If you were satisfied by Ann Coulter's head, you're either the first, or the only one who lived to tell the tale afterwards. Either way it's nothing to brag about.

These are almost universally bad ideas.

Increase child tax credit by $500 per child per year
yay costs a lot of money and only helps people with kids, and would have no real impact on low income families who already don't pay any income taxes.

Have traditional Medicare and private insurance plans bid against each other and require seniors to take the lower-cost option or pay extra.
This is among the most terrible ideas in the history of ever. All this would do is give 'free market' companies a chance to offer the shiattiest plans at the cheapest cost, get the seniors on those plans because they don't have any choice, then jack up the rates sky high. farking stupid

Repeal most of the tax provisions in Obamacare, including the medical device tax, income and capital gain surtaxes on high earners, fees on insurance premiums, the tanning tax, and the employer coverage mandate.Partially offset this by replacing the Cadillac tax on expensive health insurance plans with the Bipartisan Policy Center's plan to limit the tax exclusion for employer-provided health insurance (this is particular damaging and awful. seriously, wtf)
Scrap all of those ideas and replace it with a removal of the cap on employment tax liability

Limit the value of tax deductions for high earners
Sure, but only if you make capital gains taxed as income

All in all I'd have to say that that would be a non-starter for anyone seriously policy minded on the Dem's side of things. It's some OK things coupled with a bunch of truly ridiculous bs.
