FTFA: "Hard to sell for $1 per wing when we still have the Dollar Menu"

McDonald's entire marketing campaign was based on a wing and a prayer.

Principal Clarinet: FTFA: "Hard to sell for $1 per wing when we still have the Dollar Menu"

This.

That's a big part of it, but the bigger question is, why even offer this product?  If I'm going to McDonalds, it's for some sort of burger or sandwich.  If I want fried chicken from a fast food place, I'll go to KFC or Popeye's.   These aren't even really buffalo wings.  Buffalo wings are usually unbreaded (though breaded ones can be good to) and covered in some sort of hot sauce.  These aren't covered in any kind of hot sauce, so they're just friend chicken wings.  I don't want buffalo wings I have to dip in the sauce, I want buffalo wings covered in a sauce so hot its almost painful which I can dip into blue cheese dressing.

Though, back to the original point, no way in heck I'm paying close to $1 per wing regardless.

2013-10-16 02:30:35 AM
I'd rather have four Chicken McNuggets for $1 than a single wing. If I'm going to McDonalds it's for cheap, if I want to avoid mechanically separated beef or chicken I make my own meals.

2013-10-16 04:05:59 AM
I enjoy chicken wings with beer and televised sports to watch, not with a Diet Dr. Pepper and kids melting down over the wrong Happy Meal toy.

It's just a Cheap Trick.

My very unscientific research concludes that something like 90% of McDonald's business is in the drive thru.  Who the fark actually "dines in" at McDonald's?  Bone-in chicken wings just don't make sense if you are driving.

Let's see. Shall we eat at that famous establishment where they hire people with no skills who have ot be reminded of basic sanitation habits, or at that not so famous place that relies on its reputation as being spectacular in its portions, presentation, and variety?

Mickeees is for losers.

To be fair, though, they certainly couldn't compete on the service side:

Nobody should eat at McDonalds.

2013-10-16 08:07:01 AM
Sounds like the operators are smarter than the executives (usually the case).

90+% of people going to McDonalds are going to buy one of their "staples" (standard menu items)... I doubt many are enticed by some new menu item to come in, outside of McRib devotees who watch out for that coming back.   And it isn't like McD's is some brand that need's to get their name out there, although I guess you can't rest on your laurels, as there are list's of ubiquitous national brand B&M's that have died out.

Campaign? They didn't have one really, they just were like "let's wing it".

I used to be a McDonald's swing shift manager. You are pretty close. DT is about 70% of sales at most locations.

Mighty Wings suck. We had them temporarily in 2002 when I worked there. They used to made us cook them to order only because they were so expensive... The owner was afraid of the cost of food waste. Customers hated waiting 5 minutes for them. They didn't taste that good. And the sauces were not great for dipping.

Most people who use the drive through don't actually eat in their car.

I was surprised by how good McDonald's wings are, and I don't even like breaded wings. They were meaty and just spicy enough.

2013-10-16 08:33:03 AM
As fun as it is to bash McDonalds, I have to admit that after trying the Mighty Wings one night in desperation they were pretty good.

2013-10-16 08:34:47 AM
They weren't terrible, but they're priced way too high for what they are, especially at McDonalds.

2013-10-16 08:34:50 AM
Here's where I say, smugly, that I didn't even know McDonals was selling these barely edible pieces of congealed connective tissue and ground bone encased in congealed high fructose corn syrup laden goo.

Came here to say this.  McD's knows their business pretty well.  Wings are not a particularly portable food.

"If it doesn't have hot sauce then it is just a piece of chicken. It's running less than 2% of sales," says one owner who says the wings only account for 2% of sales

Mighty fine reporting there, Lou.

Maybe the solution is to add beer to McDonald's menu or get rid of the Dollar Menu.

It is very hard to compete with loss-leaders, ask any "mom-and-pop destroyed by WalMartWallyWorld.

Wings at $0.25/each, Cost is $0.47/each, Net ($0.22)
Beer at $2.00/glass, Cost is $0.50/glass, Net $1.50

Eat more hot wings....drink more beer.

It is a Win-Win.

I can get better wings from a local place that makes everything from scratch, but he's not open at 2 AM. Ah well. Good bye, better than expected McDonald's wings.

If you want a "Good Hamburger" served in less than 2 minutes and costing less than $10.00 then you fit in to McD Business Model.

If you want a great burger you will have to get out of your car and pay > $10.00.

Or (GASP) spend < $5.00 on ingredients and make one your self...

//Sorry, 5-Guys and Red Robin do not count as "Great" Burgers.

I was excited that they might be as good as their spicy McD wing cousins sold in China, which are quite hot and delicious.  Instead what I got were overpriced KFC clones, what a disappointment.  If you want to taste how good McDonalds can be try it in China, the food is fresher and much better prepared than in the US (maybe because the people there actually value their fast food jobs and take pride in their work?).

And can be replaced much more easily.  It's better as a consumer but rough as an unskilled worker.

Nearly $1 / wing, they don't have blue cheese available, and they can't fit into those McNugget-compatible dips. Yeah and bone-in pretty much limits them to take-home.

They honestly aren't that bad. Better than anything I ever got at KFC.

You all need to remember that there a lot of towns in the US where this is really the only place you can get wings without going into a bar and sitting down.

Not great, but you're buying wings from McDonalds; you get roughly what you'd expect.

/wish they'd bring back the salad shakers

Not sure, when did they open?

Some folks prefer huge meatloaf style burgers drowning in toppings. Others prefer thin burgers with lot's of surface area and browning.  I am in the latter category.
