Debbie would really like a story about a girl with Down's and cancer. Not so much the homecoming queen part, though.

This trend will grow and grow until it becomes the standard practice in homecomings. Then the busybodies will get butthurt about the practice because it is a cruel form of exhibitionism meant to mock disabled and LGBTQ students as part of a school-sanctioned public display.

I guess that kind of honor should instead go to someone more deserving because they're attractive or popular.

I think this is the kind of moment most of the students will remember fondly.

Anyway, is it dust in here or pollen? I need a tissue.

and as is said in every other thread about this, come Monday, she will be invisible to the regular kids, and some will be back to mocking her behind her back.

this makes the student body feel good about themselves without having to really do or sacrifice anything.

these special ed kids only exist to the normal kids around homecoming and prom time, or when community-service work is needed and then the normal kids will volunteer at the Special Olympics and get credit for pushing all the tongues in for the team photo.

Dust. Definitely dust.

I'm not sure I understand the farker thought process some days. One day, it's "you're all assholes for bullying the handicapped kid," the next it's "you're all assholes for making the handicapped kid feel cared for by the community." Your logic simply does not compute to anyone with more than one working brain cell, but I know: welcometofark.jpg

The reason this sort of thing is annoying is because we've been seeing it more and more lately, and it smacks of condescension and a false sentiment; The girl isn't being honored; She's being propped up and used to make everyone else feel good about their own inclusiveness and understanding.

The same thing happens when people die. Suddenly, the least popular kid in school is the guy everybody liked. He's the guy who was "so sweet" and people who only a week ago were giving him wedgies and calling him names are now referring to him as being able to "brighten the room when he was there" and that he "taught everyone about friendship". Suddenly, the guy everyone treated like crap is the guy everybody rallies around, now that he's dead, and it's not because those folks have decided he truly was a sweet guy that they all liked. It's because by joining the committee of people forcibly tugging on the community's heartstrings, they validate their own behavior from earlier encounters with the fellow.

No doubt: The Homecoming committee that voted this girl to the top spot spent a good few hours/days patting themselves (and each other) on the back in congratulations for being such open-minded, keen, understanding people. And no doubt every single one of them look at this girl and think, "I'm glad I'm not like her." And I have a strong suspicion that every single one of them teased her or at the very least made fun of her behind her back at some point during the previous years of knowing her.

This is their attempt to make themselves all feel better about the shiat they've said/done in the past. Not just to the girl in question, but to every other misfit and outsider. They do this one thing-- elevate a sick, mentally disabled girl to Homecoming Queen, and they can all sit around and talk about how very good they all are to do such a thing, and deny their shiatty natures for a while longer.

I've known and analyzed these sorts of people, and I'm pretty sure I know the way they work. This is nothing but bullshiat condescension and forced (probably false) show of emotion to elevate themselves; Not her.

$10 says every one of the committee members refers to this incident as "proof" of what a decent human being they are in the future.

And some of us can smell the stink of condescension and false empathy a mile away.

*wall of observations*

My class of 87' had our dead nerd over the summer, just before the start of the eleventh grade (1985).

He was pretty much the guy who endured so much that you describe and suddenly everybody loved and had some connection to after finally hearing of his death (some 2 months earlier).

Lucky for him he didnt die jerking off with his belt around his neck, or some such.

Instead, he went out by breaking his neck after crashing, pulling a hard carve while slalom water skiing behind his parents boat.

That's probably one of the cooler ways to die and he transformed from nerd to athlete just like that.

This isn't caring, though.  This is a lie.  This is feel-good nonsense, the alteration of one meaningless ritual just to pretend you are a better person than you really are.

Your "dust" bullshiat gets old too.  Few things are less worth saying than "Dust in here or just me?".  Another lie, another false affectation.  This doesn't touch you enough for you to weep.  This is just a small stone in the black pit of your soul, barely making a splash as it sinks into the well of all the other meaningless moments of your life.

If you're crying, acknowledge the thought that spawned in directly.  If you're not, and I know you're not, because this story is extremely shallow, don't pretend you are, and somehow a better man for it.

Yeah, but they usually can't. Us "normies" can go to prom get wasted, laid and have all sorts of hedonistic fun that will likely start to get displaced by better memories 3 semesters into college. This will stick with her for the rest of her sheltered life and give her a great memory of growing up and smiles in the future. At a loss to absolutely no one.
