Fish trifecta in play?

"Everybody for 160 years had been saying there's only one kind of arapaima."

:raises hand:

I wasn't.

Though in the 1880s, four species were reportedly discovered, Albert Günther, a scientist at the British Museum of Natural History, revealed that the four species were actually all one species - Arapaima gigas.

Until last year, no one questioned Günther's opinion. However, when Stewart began a study on the genus in Guyana and Brazil, he was forced to question Günther's theory.

It is really, truly, farking annoying when journalists go around claiming something new was discovered when nothing new was found, they just relabeled the shiat we already knew about.

Yeah, yeah, there's one.  But otherwise, we're solid.

Here's my thing on not eating fish:

When you eat a fish, it's a pretty slippery slope to eating a snake. I mean they swim in the same waters. And what is so different between a fish and a snake? They both have scales. Both swim in the water. Sure a fish might have some fins on it, but they're so similar.

/Cringing because it's time for me to take my fish oil pills.
//At least I can swallow them quickly and don't have to chew.
///Lifelong vegetarian who has been vegetarian so long that eating animals disgusts me more than morally offends me. Yes, I realize I'm not really a vegetarian eating fish oil (hence the disgust trumping morality).

I mean, what animal DOESN'T taste delicious pan-seared with lemon-butter sauce?

"Failure to recognize that there are multiple species has consequences that are far reaching,"

Not really. The only consequence is that someone got to write a paper about it and name the new species.

Most new "species" are about as unusual as two different colors of poodles.

I vote this for the dumbest fark post ever. fish=snake? do they have schools where your people come from?
fark you and the morality bullsh*t. the only reason vegetarians exist is because meat eaters gave them the luxury to do so.
I wonder how long the disgust and moral quandary you seem to be suffering from would last if you were stranded on a desert island with nothing but chickens.

It's just a matter of time 'til you switch from fish oil to snake oil ... if you haven't done it already.

I am starting to think the only two species of fish that live in fresh water are the snail darter and  arapaimas...

I think just stranded on a deserted island with a constant supply of fish beaching themselves would put him in a moral quandary of disgust

/I give him two days before he thanks the almighty sky man for the fish and devours them as they wash up

Hooray primitive fishes!

Though it's not a gar though, so it's not really as cool.

Bourdain ate some arapaima when he was in Brazil for an episode of "No Reservations" and quite liked it.

Snakes breathe air and have lungs.
Fish have gills to extract oxygen from water... Not related

I just did a facepalm for biology

Gars breathe air. It's possible to drown them.

Oddly enough arapaima have a modified swim bladder which functions as a primitive lung. This isn't all that rare, it allows fish to live in water with low dissolved oxygen levels.

Oh goddamnit so much you beat me to this :D  (I swear, if Jeremy Wade were the recipient of a First Nations name it'd be "Fishes for Arapaima" :D  And ironically enough, DNA testing on a scale of an arapaima he caught is one of the bits of evidence leading to recognition of multiple species of arapaima; I expect it's probably as different as largemouth and smallmouth bass, or various species of sunfish.)

And figured it was probably arapaima--which actually HAVE been fished into threatened-species status in some stretches of the Amazon because they supposedly are quite tasty and can also feed an entire Brazilian Catholic family for two weeks or more :D  (There's apparently enough of a market for them that captive breeding and fish farms for arapaima ARE being actively investigated and planned.  And Jeremy "Fishes for Arapaima" Wade does tend to catch-and-release, at any rate.)

/aquariums around here do tend to have arapaima; big farkers
