Quite an oar deal.

Waddington said Santana dragged the fish ashore because 'she said, "nobody will believe me".'

"I once caught a fish *this* big... help me out here, my arms aren't long enough."

There used to be (maybe still is) an oarfish preserved in a display case at the natural history museum in LA.  When I was a kid I loved looking at it--it was horrifying and fascinating all at once.

Man...I wish I could go back and be a kid visiting the museum again.

I spent part of my childhood in Virginia Beach, Virginia, and there was a place called the Virginia Marine Science Museum. It was awesome. Lots of hands-on exhibits, very local focus, etc. I went back there a few years ago as a side trip on honeymoon, and found that it had changed completely. Mostly an aquarium, meant more for tourists who were out of state. Kind of sad. I know exactly what you mean.

But if you're ever in Norfolk, Virginia, visit the Chrysler Museum. Amazing art collection I definitely could not fully appreciate as a child. Right across from the Montessori School I went to as a wee child. That brought back memories, and made up for the previously mentioned disappointment.

Yeah, I dig these guys at the Monterey and Long Beach (I'm pretty sure I've seen them there, little foggy). They are just so ugly it's awesome, like they had a really nasty battle with a shark and survived.

/Aquarium of the Pacific is awesome because you can pet sea anemones, sharks, and the like. I have a few mildly autistic traits and being overly tactile is one of them.

Sorry, but the Candiru is the fish of nightmares...

Oarfish are harmless. Call me when you're wading along a quiet beach and stumble across a sea krate, or a beached but not dead mako or tiger shark.

The Chinese walking death fish yawns at your nightmares.

Since the article link no longer works, it was referring to the Snakehead, an invasive species harmless to humans but lethal to everything else which possesses the ability to breath air and move across land.

It only took 17 civilians and a dog to do the same.
Seals, meh, going soft.

Was just checking out some video of these oarfish. They're pretty amazing to see how they move in the water.

The guy's voice in the video is annoying, but the footage of the oarfish is pretty cool (I think).

Lighten up, Francis. Snark aside, she doesn't look all that bad looking other than her weight.

No shiat.  It seems like every farking year we see a story about "Sea monster washes up on beach!  Public scared and confused!"
And no one seems to recall the same story a year before when the last oar fish was found.

18' is tiny, by Oar Fish standards - one variety gets up to 56 feet long. They also seem to favor very deep water - if they were likely to take a nibble on you, you were probably drowned, depth-crushed, and dead before that point. The rare ones seen in shallow water have usually been sick or dead, like this one.

Nope.  Oar fish is no sea monster.

That title belongs to the Bobbit Worm.

(Ok, stone fish is pretty awful to given that you'll likely not make it... )

Spoiler alert

I spent my childhood and the better part of my early adulthood swimming, skiing, tubing, snorkeling, fishing, etc. The older I get, the more terrified I become of bodies of water. Some friends love to cruise, but there is no way I'm going out into the middle of the ocean. I'd be a basket case.

Jeez man. I know what those are quite well but don't tell me seeing one (dead or not) while snorkeling wouldn't scare the piss out of you. Assuming your job isn't "snorkels with giant fish all the time".

This.  Although, if you encounter one of these fish while snorkeling, you should really consider a career as an Olympic swimmer since oarfish live very, very deep in the ocean.
