If Harvard, with an endowment of $30 Billion can't fork over more money then screw em. But don't burn them.

McDonald - who recently sold just two of the documents for $52,000 to the University of South Carolina, where Greener also studied and taught - is threatening to torch the rest unless Harvard offers him more cash.

Wonder where he learned that tactic?

I hate to be all 'there oughtta be a law', but in the case of historical documents... there oughtta. Destroy them in anything other than a really obvious accident, jail for at least a year.

So he can sell just two of the documents for $52,000 and is insulted with $7500 for everything else including the diploma (which I would think would be a centerpiece of the display).   Yeah.... I'm going to have to go with burning the damned things before letting those greedy bastards even touch them.

Gee, I wonder who taught him being an insensitive, selfish, mean-spirited prick with no other concern but the bottom line was a sound business practice, and that holding history hostage instead of appreciating astonishing value for its own sake and that of his children was a good negotiating tactic?

Who indeed?

Reaaaaally? Burn them all. So if you had a car worth $52K and were selling it and somebody offered you $7.5K for it you'd burn the car? You wouldn't.... oh I don't know... look for another buyer? Hold onto it until someone made a more reasonable offer? You'd just torch your car because someone tried to low ball you? That's really what you would do?

Ghastly, darling, the prevailing attitude in America these days, if you haven't noticed, is no longer "F*ck you, I've got mine," it's become "You want what I've got and won't meet my price? Then watch as I destroy what I've got JUST TO SPITE YOU." The correct answer is not only would this fool torch a $52,000 car because the first buyer wouldn't give him more than $7500, he'd put his own kids inside and the deed to his own house just to watch the "greedy" buyer cry harder. It is, after all, the New American (pat. pend.) way.

I think you're getting a little too worked up over this. Noone is killing children. The guy in TFA wants to send his children to college.

I think it's messed up that he can own these documents after finding them on the job, but if they are legally his, there's no point in getting all outraged at someone who wants to destroy his own property. It would be extremely stupid to burn them, for several reasons (best thing would be to preserve them and pass them on to his kids), but I don't see anything wrong with holding out for a fair price. Hopefully it's just an empty threat.

That's actually a smart tactic.  Play the caveman/Hulk smash angle,  those academic types WILL believe the uneducated working class anti-intellectual would do something that brutish.  They'll crumble and offer what that stuff is really worth.

The only real flaw in that plan is those papers might not be worth as much as he wants.  Then he's stuck, unless some other party comes out of left field and offers to pay him, for the PR benefits.

No, it's not.

If you have something of value, declining to sell for low offers is one thing. But threatening to destroy letters of historical value just because they won't give you enough money? That's retarded and just lets the whole world know you are too.

You see, your goods for sale are only worth what the market will give you for them. The price for some black guy's stationary is $7500, too low? Don't sell. But I guarantee you you'll never get no $7500 for some paper ashes. Not even if you slurry it with vodak and get a master tattoo artist to give you a traditional tat with them.

Meanwhile, the University of South Carolina is encouraging him to burn them.  Their papers will double or triple in value for being that much more rare!  And thus, this dude will probably demand further compensation or else he'll burn down the college or something
