Denmark misses the playoff by 1 point. The playoff draw is Monday, from what I hear.

I'm sure there are enclaves in Northern Ireland who wouldn't consider that distinction pedantic.

For the second group, you could always hope for the Dutch's Euro 2012 performance and Ivory Coast's 2010 WC performance.

Good for them being ranked 121 in the world, but still have to get through a tough playoff.

What a messed up group - Norway (!) as a one seed, Swiss top the group from the 3 seed (not all that surprising that they are through) and Iceland clinch the play off spot from the 6 seed. You know, the pot with Malta, San Marino and Lichtenstein every single year.

Really, good for Iceland.

2013-10-15 06:24:11 PM

Princip's Sandwich: For the second group, you could always hope for the Dutch's Euro 2012 performance and nearly every Ivory Coast's 2010 WC performance.

FTFY. Nearly every African Cup of Nations or WC they are marked as favorites and fail to win anything. Granted, they have very high expectations, but I kinda hope Drogba is so they can move on.

2013-10-15 06:25:42 PM

JerseyTim: Congrats to Bosnia and Herzegovina on making their first ever World Cup.

With a +24 goal differential. Will be interesting to see how they do in Brazil.

desertgeek: Denmark misses the playoff by 1 point.

When you toss out Malta, they won 2 games from 8. Do you really want to send them the WC?

In other news, Belgium looks reaaally good.

2013-10-15 06:38:27 PM
The Swiss are seeded, can you believe it?  If I remember correctly, the Dutch need Colombia or Uruguay to lose to be seeded and Italy needs both Colombia and Uruguay to lose to be seeded.  Or vice versa, I don't remember.  The US cannot be seeded.

Right now the seeds are: Brazil, Argentina, Germany, Switzerland, Spain, and Belgium.

2013-10-15 06:41:23 PM
http://espnfc.com/blog/_/name/worldcupcentral/id/854?cc=5901

Based on that article and the results today, the Dutch are seeded if either Colombia or Uruguay fail to win and Italy is seeded if BOTH Colombia and Uruguay fail to win.  I think Uruguay just started and Colombia is in an hour.

2013-10-15 06:44:26 PM

Calvin Butterball: Mid_mo_mad_man: If I understand it correctly the third auto bid is Hon's if they tie or beat The Reggae Boys. Panama is in the fourth spot with a win and a Mexico loss? So is there any reason for the USA to try to win?
There's no real incentive for the US to win tonight against Panama. The US already clinched top spot in CONCACAF. A Panama win coupled with a Costa Rica win mean Mexico will have to wait to qualify for Russia 2018.

But if the USA doesn't give 100%, Jeff Gordon gets a playoff spot in the European draw.

2013-10-15 06:48:19 PM
Also for any of you thinking the US should tank this match, that is silly.  These are players who are looking to prove they deserve starting spots or spots in the 23 next season.  Jurgen has drilled into them that this game and the last are the start of training for the WC next year.  The US also has a chance to set the record with most points and most wins in CONCACAF qualifying.  Let Mexico fail in their own right, let's not sully ourselves trying to lose.

2013-10-15 07:11:12 PM

Cajnik: Really, good for Iceland.

I'm happy for Gylfi. Dude's a stud.

2013-10-15 07:15:24 PM
It is very unlikely that Uruguay loses tonight, Argentina has rested pretty much everyone.  Colombia is going for it as well.  I wonder if the US could still end up in Pot 2 if the dutch and Italy don't qualify because I really don't want to be in a group with Brazil or Spain and either Italy or NL

Aren't WC pots geographically based besides the seeded pot?

US isn't going to get a call tonight.

2013-10-15 09:47:45 PM
Interesting thought: If Uruguay lose to Jordan, the Dutch are seeded and 8 UEFA teams will be unseeded, making their own neat pot. If Uruguay wins as predicted, 9 UEFA teams will be unseeded and FIFA will have a lot tougher decision on their hands for how to make the pools.

PANAMA!!! C'mon Costa Rica!

Well shiat.

2013-10-15 10:00:15 PM
Further: Assuming Uruguay win, you have the following number of unseeded teams: UEFA 9, CONMEBOL 2, CONCACAF 3 or 4, CAF 5, AFC 4, OFC 0 or 1.

In 2006 there were 9 unseeded UEFA teams, so FIFA put Serbia in its own special pot, and drew a seeded non-UEFA team into their group to prevent 3 UEFA teams from being in the same group. I assume the same will happen to someone this year, either being placed with CONMEBOL and CAF or possibly CONCACAF and AFC if Panama lose to NZ.

Costa Rica scores! VAMOS CANALEROS

Uh, never in a million years will this happen.  We're getting a top 8 team in a group (Brazil, Argentina, Spain, et. al.); so switch out Switzerland and replace them with either Spain, Germany, Italy, or Netherlands.  I'll say this: NO ONE wants Belgium or Columbia in their group if they already have a top 8 side AND a team like England, Ivory Coast or Japan in their group.

Group of Idon'twanttoliveonthisplanetanymore.jpg:
Brazil

Again, doubt it because Brazil and Holland are probably top 10.  Would love to see a Brazil, USA, Algeria/Burkina Faso, and maybe someone like Greece, Switzerland, Iceland or Romania in that group.

Right now I believe Switzerland's actually slated to rise above the Netherlands in the rankings.  That Dutch draw against Estonia may cost them.

Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, Switzerland, Spain, Germany, Belgium, and Uruguay if they beat Jordan in the play-off. Netherlands get the last seed if Jordan pull the shocker.

Ugh, the potential for Italy AND Holland swimming around Pot #3 for a potential group of death is...disturbing.

So, with 45 minutes left in San Jose, if results elsewhere hold, Mexico is one Costa Rica goal away from elimination. Frightening times in Mexico.

2013-10-15 10:39:25 PM
So let's get this straight right now:

Seeded teams: Brazil, Spain, Argentina, Germany, Belgium, Switzerland, Columbia and Uruguay or Netherlands (if Uruguay loses the playoff v Jordan)

African qualifiers: 5 spots all to be decided between Nov 16-19 in the playoff 2nd legs (which is frankly just plain evil)

Europe non-seeds: England, Italy, Russia, Bosnia + 4 playoff winners

Asia: Australia, Iran, Japan, South Korea

South American non-seeds: Chile, Ecuador

North America: USA, Costa Rica and as of now, Honduras

Intercontinental playoffs: Uruguay v Jordan, New Zealand v (as of now) Mexico

Africa historically seems to like making their qualifying format look as close to a straight-up bracket as they reasonably can. It makes it easy to shuffle things around in the wake of the six or seven countries that have to withdraw every time out.

Because of eligibility issues? Yeah, you're right. But it's still crappy.
