It's CONCACAF, subby.

Carrick starts for England in a must win for auto-qualify. Should be good.

If I understand it correctly the third auto bid is Hon's if they tie or beat The Reggae Boys. Panama is in the fourth spot with a win and a Mexico loss? So is there any reason for the USA to try to win?

Netherlands leads Turkey 1-0 at the half.
Azerbaijan came back to tie Russia 1-1.Portugal just beat Luxembourg 3-0. The second goal by Nani was a nice give-and-go inside the area. Portugal will go to the playoffs to try to win a spot in the World Cup.

There's no real incentive for the US to win tonight against Panama. The US already clinched top spot in CONCACAF. A Panama win coupled with a Costa Rica win mean Mexico will have to wait to qualify for Russia 2018.

Pride? I dunno, I'm guessing we'll be tossing in a second string (haven't seen the lineups yet).  All the games are on at the same time, so it'd probably be difficult to throw the game without it being too obvious.  I don't like manipulating the game that way....but I certainty won't feel bad if a US loss means Mexico doesn't go through.

I didn't mean to throw the game. I meant is it likely they just fall back and prevent a loss ie play for the draw

Jurgen's sent anyone home who's had anything more than a deep thought about an injury. Guzan's in goal, Sean Johnson's his backup.

It's not 100% second string, but there's no Tim Howard, Landon, Deuce, Bradley, Jemaine Jones...

It would be much easier if that bicycle kick didn't happen. A draw would've helped Panama more than Mexico. Instead, it's this:

Honduras clinches a WC spot with a win or draw vs Jamaica or a Mexico loss/draw vs Costa Rica
Honduras is guaranteed at least the playoff spot.

Mexico clinches a WC spot with a win + a Honduras loss and the combined margins allow MEX to make up 3 goals in the goal differential. If the differential is only 2 goals, HON advances on goals scored (currently 11-6).

Mexico earns the playoff spot with a win or draw or a Panama loss/draw vs USA.

Panama earns the playoff spot only with a win and a MEX loss. Currently, the GD margin is 2. Unless the MEX match is a high scoring affair and PAN v USA isn't, PAN needs to only make up the 2 goal margin to advance on goals scored (currently 8-6).

The Costa Rican coach said yesterday that the Mexican team has no respect for Central American teams and that's why they're playing for a spot tonight. As much as they treated the US team like shiat for that match last month, no one was saying that about the Americans at least.

Good for them being ranked 121 in the world, but still have to get through a tough playoff.

What a messed up group - Norway (!) as a one seed, Swiss top the group from the 3 seed (not all that surprising that they are through) and Iceland clinch the play off spot from the 6 seed. You know, the pot with Malta, San Marino and Lichtenstein every single year.

Really, good for Iceland.

The Swiss are seeded, can you believe it?  If I remember correctly, the Dutch need Colombia or Uruguay to lose to be seeded and Italy needs both Colombia and Uruguay to lose to be seeded.  Or vice versa, I don't remember.  The US cannot be seeded.

Right now the seeds are: Brazil, Argentina, Germany, Switzerland, Spain, and Belgium.

Also for any of you thinking the US should tank this match, that is silly.  These are players who are looking to prove they deserve starting spots or spots in the 23 next season.  Jurgen has drilled into them that this game and the last are the start of training for the WC next year.  The US also has a chance to set the record with most points and most wins in CONCACAF qualifying.  Let Mexico fail in their own right, let's not sully ourselves trying to lose.

Further: Assuming Uruguay win, you have the following number of unseeded teams: UEFA 9, CONMEBOL 2, CONCACAF 3 or 4, CAF 5, AFC 4, OFC 0 or 1.

In 2006 there were 9 unseeded UEFA teams, so FIFA put Serbia in its own special pot, and drew a seeded non-UEFA team into their group to prevent 3 UEFA teams from being in the same group. I assume the same will happen to someone this year, either being placed with CONMEBOL and CAF or possibly CONCACAF and AFC if Panama lose to NZ.

Costa Rica scores! VAMOS CANALEROS

Uh, never in a million years will this happen.  We're getting a top 8 team in a group (Brazil, Argentina, Spain, et. al.); so switch out Switzerland and replace them with either Spain, Germany, Italy, or Netherlands.  I'll say this: NO ONE wants Belgium or Columbia in their group if they already have a top 8 side AND a team like England, Ivory Coast or Japan in their group.

Right now I believe Switzerland's actually slated to rise above the Netherlands in the rankings.  That Dutch draw against Estonia may cost them.

Rwa2play: Woolwine: Estimating what the rest of the field would look like, here are some interesting groups that could be drawn.

Group of THANK YOU GOD:
Switzerland
USA
Burkina Faso
Iceland

Group of Idon'twanttoliveonthisplanetanymore.jpg:
Brazil
Netherlands
USA
Ivory Coast

Again, doubt it because Brazil and Holland are probably top 10.  Would love to see a Brazil, USA, Algeria/Burkina Faso, and maybe someone like Greece, Switzerland, Iceland or Romania in that group.

Group of awkward/get-your-popcorn-ready/exploding internets:
Germany
England
USA
Ghana

More like Germany, Iran, Ghana, USA.  Talk about awkward...

Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, Switzerland, Spain, Germany, Belgium, and Uruguay if they beat Jordan in the play-off. Netherlands get the last seed if Jordan pull the shocker.

So, with 45 minutes left in San Jose, if results elsewhere hold, Mexico is one Costa Rica goal away from elimination. Frightening times in Mexico.

So let's get this straight right now:

Seeded teams: Brazil, Spain, Argentina, Germany, Belgium, Switzerland, Columbia and Uruguay or Netherlands (if Uruguay loses the playoff v Jordan)

African qualifiers: 5 spots all to be decided between Nov 16-19 in the playoff 2nd legs (which is frankly just plain evil)

Europe non-seeds: England, Italy, Russia, Bosnia + 4 playoff winners

Asia: Australia, Iran, Japan, South Korea

South American non-seeds: Chile, Ecuador

North America: USA, Costa Rica and as of now, Honduras

Intercontinental playoffs: Uruguay v Jordan, New Zealand v (as of now) Mexico

Africa historically seems to like making their qualifying format look as close to a straight-up bracket as they reasonably can. It makes it easy to shuffle things around in the wake of the six or seven countries that have to withdraw every time out.

No kidding. I'm pulling hard for Iceland and Ethiopia to win their playoff ties and add some easier sides to the competition (And Jordan, obviously). Seeing Ukraine and Romania make it over Portugal or Croatia or Sweden would also be nice, else that UEFA pot will be terrifying.

I'm just glad the US didn't draw.  If we won, Mexico made it, but at least we won with our B+/A- squad.  If we lost then Mexico was out and I was still happy.  A draw means the US doesn't win and Mexico advances.  We got the win off of some great goals and service by the wide players and even though Mexico is still alive, they have to play NZ just to get there.

If anyone has twitter, read @ussoccer because they are trolling Mexico right now and it is hilarious.

But Northern Ireland isn't part of "Britain," it's a part of the United Kingdom and the person I responded to said "brits"

/Geography pedantry is best pedantry

Northern Ireland is part of the British Isle so it depends on whether the "Brits" used is referring to the political entity, the largest island or the island group. So even someone from the Republic of Ireland can be referred to as a Brit (as in someone from the British Isles)

Plus if you want real pedantry then GB was correct to refer to England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland until the last couple of decades, hence why the UK olympic team is under the Great Britain name and not the United Kingdom.

"It is because of the USA that we are being placed in the playoff ...BECAUSE OF THEM , NOT DUE TO YOU..NOT ANY OF YOU in the green shirts ....IT WAS THEM!!.NOT YOU!..THEY DID IT!!!!!NOT YOU! remember this forever..... KEEP THIS CLEARLY IN MIND FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIVES! ....
"IT IS A FAILURE.....and UNDESERVED -to go through to the playoff- WE HAD NO ARGUMENTS to earn the playoffs, THE USA, WITH SUBS , WITH MANY SUBS as the visiting team shows us once again what the USA is all about ....how to play the game with dignity, how to approach the sport..MExico is a horror, just terrible....A FAILURE....
......
THE USA HAS SURPASSED US ..They are better than Mexico in SOCCER ....THEY EVEN HAVE THE LUXURY OF PLAYING THEIR SUBS and KEEPING US LIVE.... I hope our coach wears the pants and resigns..He has failed as coach...."

And every Mexican media outlet was venting anger at the Mexican team for being in that position. Every single one of them.

The Mexican soccer association should be beyond embarrassed. Their team was a joke from start to finish this year. And when you get right down to it, that bicycle kick on Friday saved their ass. If that ball doesn't go in and the match ends in a draw, assuming Tuesday's results stayed the same; Panama would've still been in the playoff on goals scored.

But instead; they're thanking Uncle Sam, Orozco is on some newspaper covers and everyone is wondering if they really can beat the Kiwis in the playoff. How the once mighty Mexicans have fallen.

To think: before the Hex started, everyone was raving about how good Mexico had been in the Olympics and the U-17s.  How that crop of players would begin to blossom and show that Mexico had kicked it up a notch.

Now?  Many are impressed with the US' showing and how Mexico struggled...badly.

But instead; they're thanking Uncle Sam, Orozco is on some newspaper covers and everyone is wondering if they really can beat the ...

As a Mexican, I really hope New Zealand wins. The Mexican Soccer Association failed, the coach failed, the players failed, and I think that us, as a country, have better things to think about right now, than to think about the World Cup.

So, what am I supposed to do w/ my El Tri jersey? Wear it just to piss of my fiance (as noted above, she's Mexican and hates the Mexican team).?!!  Well, she does love all things Kiwi (Flight of the Conchords, NZ music, etc).  Ok, I'm rooting for the All-Whites (that's NZ's knickname, due to their uniform, as opposed to their rugby's, 'All-Blacks').

That's one, also note that Mexico has been playing well this year, although that might give you more 'sleep on the couch' chances, so maybe not :p.

If NZ's team does a hakka before the game, right infront of El Tri, that would be epic XD.

Sadly, the Kiwi soccer team doesn't generally do hakas - something about it looking ridiculous when a bunch of skinny whitefellas try it. (Rugby being the national sport, NZ have a different definition of "skinny" to the rest of us.)

The haka works well with big, burly rugby players. I don't think it would work as well with smaller soccer players. Maybe they could recruit the rugby team to do it in support of their fellow countrymen though.
