Somone buy this mascot, ASAP, if this company won't embrace the opportunity. Merchandise the hell out of it. Plushes. Posters. Stickers, you name it.

The company-an Osaka-based maker of industrial cooling equipment with no connection to the nuclear plant of the same name

The nuclear plant could maybe have used the company's products to avoid this Fukuppy.

What's even more unfortunate is when idiots take a foreign word and try to pronounce it as if it's English. That word doesn't sound like you people think it does.

I misread that as "Fukpuppy" which, considering it's Japan, made me think furries.

Hey, lots of us here speak Japanese and know how it's "supposed" to be pronounced. It doesn't change how it's spelled in Roman lettering.

It is funny, and may be a marketing coup for this company. I'm not quick to assume this was a total accident; you see plays on language like that all the time in Japan.

Some underpaid salaryman is having fear-laced giggle fits this week.

Maybe they should spell it differently in English then?

April 1st all the icons in a major app I wrote will turn to pictures of meme cats for the day...

Every few years some Japanese company does something like this.  I went looking for the legendary Japanese electronics maker who was about to introduce an early pocket computer -- I seem to remember it was Sanyo, but who knows -- and had to be rather pointedly warned by their US distributor not to call it "The Handjob."

Of course now, trying to search for "handjob" and "Japan," you get all sorts of results that have nothing whatever to do with portable computers.

Is that like turning "Whoops" into "Whoopsie" to somehow try to lessen the impact?

This thing reminds me of Togepi. Maybe the name comes from the same place and is just one of those cute portmanteaus gone wrong? Fukushima + pyopyo = Fukupy?
