DarkVader: partially blown up in the 1950s (terrorist attack)

I for one would love to know that story.

Or the highway every other mile post where there seems to be some memorial cross for somebody.....

Giltric: Barry Lyndon's Annuity Cheque: Massively Multiplayer Addict: Are they really demolishing it just because a gunman went on a rampage there and put some bullet holes in the walls? Or did it need to be replaced anyway?

The school was built sometime in the fifties or sixties, if I remember right. I don't know the usual timetable on replacing schools, but after fifty or sixty years it was probably due for an upgrade anyways.

An upgrade from brick mortar and steel to carbon fiber?

I live in a 200 year old stone house.

We have granite countertops, copper plumbing and central air/heat.

We didn't have to tear down the building to upgrade.

We even have 'lectricity and the interweb wired in every room.

Are you a lobbyist for the school construction corporation?

Or maybe one of those people who leases a new car every 2 years, buys a new cell phone every other month.......

Or, like Mitt, tear down a $12M seaside mansion to build a $30M one...

/don't worry, he's one of us, I promise...

octabeck: It won't be long before the Alex Jones types show up to complain about how this is evidence that the shooting was a "false flag," and that this action is clear proof that "something" is being hidden.

Saw the story on today.  Story is pretty much what you expect but the comments section is where the real nectar is.

Not to digress, but note the Fark-ready headline below the Newtown article: "China's Rich and Powerful Love Them Some Animal Penis".

George Babbitt: DarkVader: partially blown up in the 1950s (terrorist attack)

I for one would love to know that story.

It was the 1950s, the school had recently been desegregated.  The attack happened at night, no one was hurt, but quite a bit of the building was heavily damaged.  The terrorists were never caught.

Why is it being torn down to start with?  Suppose it's not torn down.  Future students will be too young to understand what happened.  I don't see how classes there would be traumatic for them.

DarkVader: You've got to remove it if you tear it down, so you get no win there. If you don't tear it down, you can leave the asbestos in place if it's not degrading.

After 40-60 years, it's degrading. We had a school in my town that had a music room where touching one of the walls would get you a suspension because of the asbestos behind it.

/demoing the entire building is cheaper then pulling out asbestos and re-insulating the building, as well as fixing the roof, the boiler, etc.etc.etc.

fluffy2097: demoing the entire building is cheaper then pulling out asbestos

You have to remove the asbestos before demo.

Asbestos abatement has to be done regardless.
