Good luck getting anyone to sign there in the offseason if Schiano is still there. Who would want to play for a coach who will throw you under the bus?

"The only thing I can say to the fans is, if they can hang in there, we're going to be good," Schiano said Monday. "If they can't, we're still going to be good, and they're welcome back. I'm not being smart; I mean that."

Why does he still have a job?

He also said "Everybody. Yeah. Quit playing games with my heart. As long as you love me, I'll never break your heart. It's the shape of my heart that makes me larger than life."

For fun, go pull Tampa's Franchise Index page on ProFootballReference, and look at the defensive rankings through the  years. From '96 through 2008 they are consistently Top 10 in both points and yards allowed, having only one hiccup in '06 (21st and 17th respectively). Since then their defense has pretty much fallen off a cliff.

Schiano is qualified to coach Florida International, and that's about it.

He was 28-48 in conference games at Rutgers.  It's amazing that NFL franchises continue to hire mediocre college coaches like Schiano and Marrone.

Surely there still talented players Greg can send north, Talib has improved the Patriot D immensely and Blount is a nice pickup but I'm still not satisfied.

Come on Gregg, punish a few more guys by sending them where the are crashed in the victory formation instead of getting to be the crasher

And Rich McKay as the GM. Since he got run out of town by Gruden they haven't had one draft where they've picked up a player the caliber of Lynch, Sapp, Barber, Brooks, or Alstott. And nice to know you're paying Revis a king's ransom so that you can start the season 0-5. I wouldn't let Dominik manage a Taco Bell let alone an NFL team.

You'd have more luck getting Cowher than Dungy at this point. Tony ain't coming back to the sidelines.

But, I agree. Schiano needs to be booted from the ranks of head coaching....he's bush league at best and a coward to boot.

/Maybe Marge Schott will rise from the grave, buy a team and move them to Tucson. It would be an improvement over a guy who refused to pay for a stadium, let alone a weight room.

I think it was someone on Dan Patrick's show yesterday that said it best (and it could have been another show to be honest)..

Schiano's problem is that he is a bully. You cross him, and he wants to make you look bad. He goes out his way to humiliate the guys who don't buy into the program.

Bellichek is no less of a hard ass, but if you cross him, you get cut. No humiliation, nothing like that. He just cuts you or ships you out.

Players respect the Bellichek method a hell of a lot more than the Schiano method.

For even more fun, go through their Franchise Index page and see how many distinct 5-games losing streaks you can count in the history of the franchise. I tried on Monday and I wound up with 22 including streaks that spanned multiple seasons, and not counting 10+ game losing streaks as multiple streaks.

I honestly don't get why this team doesn't get as much grief as the Browns/Lions/Bills.

This is the team that made Bo Jackson take a pass on football to play for the Kansas City Royals.

This is the team that nearly made Steve Young give up football and go back to Law School.

This is the team that once accidentally amputated the left middle fingertip of their star wide receiver.

This is the team that has had at least 3 starting quarterbacks leave the team and go on to win a Super Bowl, and at least one more on top of that make it to the Super Bowl.

This is the team with the worst winning percentage of any active franchise in the NFL.

And now this is the team that infects its players with a flesh-eating disease and leaks information on former star players on their way out the door.

God I hate this team.

Nice.

That is my favorite funny football quote, by far.

//The rants (Playoffs, Dennis Green, etc.) are overall funnier, but that has to be one of the best responses to a reporter's question I have ever heard.  The only one I can think of that I like more is Tommy Lasorda's "What did I think of Kingman's performance?" and that is much more the inflection of his voice than the actual words.

See also: Todd Haley. There are a ton of other guys I could mention who fall into that camp, but Haley and Schiano strike me, because they don't have the skins on their wall to justify the behavior.

They won a Super Bowl, it's as simple as that. You win it all and you'll never be known as the "worst" again, so long as there are other teams that have not won it all.

2013-10-15 02:16:10 PM
So, while we're talking about really, really bad teams....

Say the Giants keep playing as bad as they are and end up with, oh, 4ish wins and top 5 pick. Lets be real here folks, only the bottom-of-the-barrel-hand-me-a-shovel play of the Jags keeps Big Blue from being far and away the worst of the worst.

Does Reese keep his job? Coughlin?

How big a discussion do you have about that pick?

Do you take a QB?

Reese will keep his, Coughlin will be back for one more year if he wants to be.

I think their talent at the skill positions and upcoming cap room allows them to seriously consider trading down to address areas of need (OL, LB) in what is apparently considered a deep draft.  I doubt they'd consider taking a QB that early when they used a pick on one last year and hopefully still have at least 4-5 more years from Eli.

Schiano's NFL career seems to be heading in One Direction since he can't seem to get his team N'Sync. For that, his coaching seat is about 98 Degrees. So much for being the New Kid On The Block as soon the NFL head coaching ranks will have a New Edition.

I still think Schiano could make it as a head coach, actually.  What was the name of that one school from the gulf coast that made some noise in the cbb tourney this past year?  Do they have a football team?  Maybe they could use a coach.  And he might not even have to move.

Honestly, as a longtime Bucs fan, I feel that the 2002 team had likely the softest route to the Super Bowl ever.

They lost to Aaron Brooks and the Saints twice.

They won one regular season road game against a team with a winning record (Atlanta @ 9-6-1).

They played (and beat) 4 non-divisional 10-loss teams.

They got the fantastic fortune of playing against Mariucci, Reid, and Callahan in the playoffs, and of having their already great defense developing ball-seeking magnet gloves with 13 turnovers forced in the 3 playoff games.

They then came back the next year with the same coaching staff and players and went 7-9, with no major injuries or departures. All it took was slightly worse luck to finish behind Jake Delhomme & Aaron Brooks in the division.

Seems like just taking on more risk since a shotgun snap is riskier than a snap under center.

studleystudstutterson:.They then came back the next year with the same coaching staff and players and went 7-9, with no major injuries or departures.

Would disagree with that statement.  They lost Kelly and Alstott pretty early in the year (with the Kelly injury combining with the refs not understanding kick off rules leading directly to the Colts huge comeback on Monday night)   By the end they also didn't have 2 of their top 3 receivers.  Along with a few other starters/contributors that ended up on IR by the end of the season.

2013-10-15 07:54:19 PM

studleystudstutterson: They won one regular season road game against a team with a winning record (Atlanta @ 9-6-1).

Also, while that particular stat seems like it would be telling it means nothing.  Ravens last year?  0 wins on the road vs teams with a winning record.  Giants the year before?  1 win.
