The One True TheDavid: AverageAmericanGuy: The 5-0 decision came a day after Sparks resigned from his post as he faced a federal investigation for allegedly covering up a local Sheriff Eugene Crum's prescription drug use.

Maybe it's just my small town upbringing, but this seems like something I'd not be too worked up about.

A lot would depend on whether the sheriff and prosecutor behaved. If they decided that drugs, or even certain drugs, were de facto decriminalized I'd have a better opinion of them than if they were doing what I'm pretty sure they were doing.

I'm proud to have West Virginia as an ancestral homeland -- it's the only state that's completely within Appalachia -- but I'm glad my grandfather decided to move away. Even if he was run out of the state for things we don't mention in public. WV's good for making its neighboring states look better, at least.

Apparently Sheriff Crum was involved in the drug trade, and the judge and prosecutor were covering up for him. The sheriff was shot and killed in April while eating lunch in his car by a man he'd allegedly molested when the guy was a teen (this didn't come out til August). His widow was appointed sheriff. Then she resigned because she "hadn't had time to properly grieve" or more likely because info was coming out that Crum was in fact a drug dealer. Prosecutor (of the guy who shot Crum) stepped down because of a conflict of interest and has since been disbarred for his part in the drug trade in Mingo County. Judge recused himself then later got brought up on federal corruption charges.
TL; DR: Mingo County is a hellhole.
