I'm secretly hoping going into default means we all start over at zero.

the_geek: The Beatings Will Continue Until Morale Improves: There is no mechanism for this and it won't be invented before Thursday when the US defaults. Government debt instruments will be devalued and that will break the credit market.

To be perfectly honest I'm not familiar with whether or not the debt payments take precedence over "mandatory" spending in the budget or not.  That being said, you're silly to think that couldn't and wouldn't be handled by Thursday if need be.

More likely though is they'll continue to pass CRs until a larger deal is made.

Incredibly unlikely is a default.. like unfathomably unlikely.

The Treasury Department has no method for prioritizing payments. They do first in first out. When this issue came up in 2011 the Treasury Department  issued a statement saying that prioritization of payments isn't possible and, even if it was, would not prevent a default. They can't choose to just pay debt payments first.  I know this  is a comforting fantasy for the people who created this mess but it has no basis in reality. Try not to be suckered into a lie just because you want to believe it.

I hear more and more liberals parroting the same nonsense about Tea Party Republicans being guilty of treason, subverting the government or whatever. I realize it's hyperbole and all but it amazes me to hear people suggesting that elected political opponents should be arrested or are "terrorists" for opposing the President's agenda.

Oh...you were serious? Go ahead and point out what criminal law Ted Cruz has broken.

1/10

LOL, I'll take that as an admission you were just talking out of your ass.

Let's be clear, the US isn't going to default on its debt even if we don't raise the debt ceiling or pass a budget.  We take in WAY more money than the payments on our debt.  All that happens is that we rearrange some spending priorities.  It'll be slightly worse than the regular shutdown, most people won't notice the difference.

If the US defaults and Wall Street collapses, tall buildings like the Empire State Building should start allowing people rooftop access for a fee so that they can commit suicide from.  They can, also, charge fees to allow people to park their lemon cars in front of the building so that they can collect the insurance money after a half dozen people fall on it.

I'm just saying.

August11: So our country has been hijacked by a group of mostly southern individuals from some of the poorest, ill-educated, bible-humping regions of our country?

And the future is bleak? Really?

In hindsight, maybe we should have let the South secede

Yeah, yeah.
Crisis, blah blah.

Bush tax cuts for the rich became permanent, that's what happened.
Fark that stupidity.
Time to let the adults run the government.

Quotes from the people who get it aren't scary.  Quotes like these from our legislators are scary:

In an interview with the Washington Post, Rep. Ted Yoho (R-FL) said on not raising the debt ceiling, "I think, personally, it would bring stability to the world markets."

This is because, in his view, "we need to have that moment where we realize [we're] going broke." He firmly told the paper, "I'm not going to raise the debt ceiling." He also characterized the current government shutdown as "the tremor before the tsunami."
