Several dozen U.S. Army active duty and reserve troops were told last week that the American Family Association, a well-respected Christian ministry, should be classified as a domestic hate group because the group advocates for traditional family values.

Considering these hate groups use the term "traditional family values" in place of "anti-gay bigotry," what's the problem?

There seems to be a correlation between people who don't recognize AFA as a hate group and people who have difficulty with spelling.

They are a hate group.

Precisely.  They didn't say Christians are a hate group, they said the American Family Association is.

And, if our local Fark Christians™ are to be believed, groups like the AFA have nothing to do with "Real" Christians anyway.

So what's the problem?

They are a hate group.  I don't see why they deny it. If you're gonna say gay people are sinners and are going to hell; that you don't want them getting married or teaching your children; that you don't want them having the same rights and opportunities as you; well, then, you don't like them, do you?

It's hard to see yourself reflected in a mirror when labeled like this, but in this case, it is very accurate.  AFA hates gay people  They are a hate group.  The end.

2013-10-14 07:51:22 PM
The Southern Poverty Law Center considers the American Family Association to be a hate group too. In fact they have done so since 2010.

Funny how wide the net is cast when someone wants to show how "Christians" are being persecuted.

Then have some guy named Romney run for President and suddenly what constitutes "Christian" is a much stricter definition.

If I may ask, does the AFA advocate for violence against homosexuals? Do they advocate putting homosexuals into jails? How about forced sterilization?

Well, they're not wrong by calling the AFA a hate group.

Remember when Foxnews said we were declaring war on good Christians in Africa. You know, the kind that pay their child soldiers with rape.

If you've ever served in the military, you know that you are going to come face to face with some serious Christians and even with some of the really, really radical religionists who will be incredibly offended if you don't think exactly as they do because they live in towns of 200 people and everyone shares their beliefs. It's not a shocker.

Hell, even I went to church in Reception/OSUT because it was the only way to get the f*ck out of the barracks. Religion is a rather big part of the Army. I don't see that ending ever. Especially considering the nature of what they do.

The AFA are a bunch of goddamn extremist assholes and they should be classified as a hate group. But to think you're going to get soldiers to not give them money or listen to their radio garbage? Maybe if Top throws him on extra duty and takes his rank? But, then you'd have a religious fight and I doubt the CO wants that.

Yes to the first two---Bryan Fischer supports and has given airtime to the inspiration for the Ugandan capital punishment bill for same-sex activity. The AFA's Fischer has repeatedly refused to answer questions about his own sexuality.

Hey, thanks for joining the thread, cman. One can appreciate a reasonable question of why the AFA is listed as a hate group.  Here's some literature for consideration.

Here are some quotes from AFA leadership, referenced by the Southern Poverty Law Center. They seem fascinated by Jews and GLBTs.

And the AFA's history points to it making outrageous claims about people like Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagan being a lesbian unfit for public office smacks of pure hatred,

The AFA website claims they don't hate homosexuals. But actions and speech indicate they're farkin' hate-filled bigots like the KKK, neo-Nazis and such. Now the AFA hasn't bombed any churches or killed any school aged kids like some KKK members have in the past. However, demonstrating open hostility to Jews and GLBTs doesn't sound like anything Jesus would say to his mom.

I like how the writer threw in Catholics as an army recognized hate group.
