If you don't know where you are and don't have a compelling reason to plan on staying in the area why shoot a 80+ lbs creature. Unless you have a bunch of salt on hand or are suprisingly good at making smokey fires the meat will just spoil in about 36 hours and hualing it around is a lot of work. As long as you have a reasonable amount of ammo a 2 or 3 lbs rabbit or squirrel is way more convienat.

MrHappyRotter: He didn't have enough energy to shoot the deer?  What?  Was he hunting them with a taser?

Possibly a bow. Like people actually do.

He may more have meant he didn't have the energy to deal with it after he shot it, though, they do kind of take some cleaning and all.

i think its even more embarrassing that he was found within 3 miles of where he went missing. what a great search party.... searches for 4 days but cant make it to the 3 mile mark...

sawzallz: It seems like a sound idea but I have no idea if it is true.

My experience is to kill the younger bucks and elk or the larger ones out of the rut.  Killing a big bull/buck in the prime of the rut is going to reduce the taste of the meat.

haemaker: I'm not sure I understand.  Was he lost?

From TFA's report, Apparently he wasn't sure so he decided to to assume he wasn't and stayed where he was.
