Those will be some dark entries in his criminal record.

/Get well soon, Peter.

I don't know who he is, but how did he escape hard time for manslaughter and drug use? If he was black, he'd probably go away for 15 years "mandatory minimum sentencing".

I'm guessing he avoided manslaughter charges by virtue of the fact that no one died. First offense for simple possession and DUI isn't going to net you hard time in most states if you plead out.

I'm sure it's cutting him up.

he was sentenced to three years of probation and ordered to attend 45 days of Narcotics Anonymous meetings,

So, no punishment, but he has to become a Scientologist.

If he wasn't famous, he would have been locked up for 5 years.  Lady Justice FTW!

Probably because a) no one was killed so there's no manslaughter charge and b) meth possession in California can be charged as either a misdemeanor or a felony. Assuming it was a small amount as the article indicates and a first offense (and since Murphy can likely afford a good lawyer), it was likely plead down to no jail time.

Either way, he's essentially getting a lighter sentence because he's sitting around and praying to Baal bedpan or the divine doorknob.  And somehow we're okay with it.

CSB

Was sitting at the bar of my local in London, ca 1986. Looked at the guy next to me and asked "Are you Peter Murphy"

He raised his glass and said "Cheers".

Kinda sorta knew the guy I was next to was in Bauhaus, and flipped mental coin and chose that over Daniel Ash, thankfully.

He was driving because he didn't want to fall asleep on the subway again and fall on some knife which would then cut him up and make him have some strange kind of feeling!

Remember seeing him in the 80s and he through a giant handful of X into the audience.

I caught two, to go with the two I had already eaten.

Yeah, I saw Bauhaus a few years back and they didn't Bela Lugosi, Telegram Sam, Ziggy Stardust or a ton of the other good songs.

I wanted my money back.

I thought he lived in Turkey and was leading a cool, interesting life. Now I find he`s driving a Forester on meth in California. WTF?

Oh, wow... I met him many years back. He was on his spiritual kick, and I really did not get a "future meth-head" vibe from him.

I guess I understand now why the Reunion didn't work, now... Though I assumed it was more Ash than Murphy's fault. I think I may have been wrong about that assumption.

I met Daniel Ash in Detroit not long after I met Murphy, and Ash seemed totally with-it and actually very cool, but if I were going to pick one of the two to develop a meth habit, it would have been Ash (sorry, man) and not Murphy. Murphy was giving off the Zen vibe, and Ash was giving off the party-guy vibe.

I guess things change, though.

Yeah... their reunion tour. They wanted to push the new album, primarily, and made a big mistake in letting their infighting stop them from playing classics.

And then they split up again because they couldn't work together.

He left his victim laying In The Flat Field while the witnesses Got his plates with A Minature Secret Camera. He should have gotten more time when His Subaru And Hers Meet but luck would have it that the judge let Murphy do the St Vitus Dance away from the more serious jail term possibly imposed.

I once saw Bowie handle that well.  He introduced every new song with "And now's the part of the show where the artist says 'we're going to play something off the new album'", which made it clear you could head for the concession stand.

Met David J at a club he was going to DJ at. We chatted for a while. I kicked myself later because I should have explained to him why I was sitting down in the front row of a L&R show here in Portland way back (I had torn a ligament in my ankle on the stairs during intermission, though I didn't know that at the time, only that it was agonizing to stand up for more than a minute or so).

If this had just been drug possession, I could agree with that.  That's not what this is,  This is a hit and run, meaning he hit somebody else's car and put every other driver on the road in needless danger because he was high off his tits.  And part of the punishment is for him to go pray to his higher power so he doesn't smoke some meth that day. . .err, get overpowered by the "cunning, baffling, and powerful" rock?  How does that not violate the First Amendment?  His religion and his health are his own goddamned business; public safety is the courts.  If you want to make the case that he shouldn't be in the big house because of overcrowding or that somebody didn't get hurt, I'll listen to that.  But if the primary reason he isn't doing time in PMITA prison is because he's praying and taking care of his health, send the guy to prison.

I actually just started listening to Peter Murphy a couple weeks ago.  I heard a song from his "Ninth" album and it was fantastic so I got the album.  I knew he sang for Bauhaus, and I have their biggest album (I don't know it very well) but man does he have some awesome pipes.  Of course, as always happens with me, I googled to see when he would be in town and he was just here this summer.  Naturally, I didn't see him.

I would love to hear him sing the newer stuff, and don't really know the older stuff outside of a few Bauhaus songs and the Ziggy cover.

I come from Northampton, England and was raised in the early-mid 80s, and I can tell you that everyone that I know has a non-CSB Bauhaus story.

1) Mate of mine's sister went out with one of them.
2) My mate was queueing up at a phone box and David J comes out. "Are you David J?" "Fark off"
3) I worked in a record shop and one day, Daniel Ash walked in.
4) Another mate of mine served one of them in Wimpy (burger chain)

This has the makings of a new reality show.  Call it "Celebrity Justice...?"

Follow the celebrity perp as the judge hands down a ridiculously light sentence, then track them as they do their "community service" whilst biatching the entire time about how terrible it is to do a few hours of "work" (or whatever) when they should be on a yacht in the French Riviera hootin' blow off a stripper's rack.

Then the big finish would be a comparison of non-celebrity perps and the sentences *they* were given for the exact same infraction, and we all know how that goes.  Or better, show the harsher sentences for lesser infractions for non-celebrities.

Will they call hi 'Skinny Pete' in rehab?

Probably no, no ,no.
