Well, that's not nearly as exciting as I thought it was going to be.

So wi-fi everywhere except expensive hotels?

/yes they have it but the more you pay for a hotel room, the more likely they are to charge for wi-fi, have some stupidly complex way of signing on

"We could even use it to monitor fish and marine mammals, and find out how to best protect them from shipping traffic and other dangers,"

This researcher will be disappointed once FishTube gets created with videos of a trout teasing a shark and softcore lobster porn video that also teaches about the dangers of crabs.

A few weeks back I went to a wedding while en route for some business travel.  I stayed at a fair but not amazing hotel for the wedding on my own dime, and then at a hotel that was around 3x the cost for the business travel on the company dime.

Wedding hotel?  Free buffet breakfast, free wi-fi.
Business hotel?  $20 buffet breakfast, $15 a day wi-fi.

Not only was the wedding hotel's breakfast better because it was free, the food was better too.  Other than the annoying dance to get connected at the business hotel the internet connections were about on par.

If memory serves, submerged submarines need to use VLF, which implies rather limited bandwidth. Your cat pictures will be ASCII art.

I thought Wi-Fi was nearly dead--everyone relies on 3G instead, and the only restaurants that seem to offer Wi-Fi are McDonalds.

...recapitulating the essence of God in the story of Jonah and the whale.

No matter how deep you go (God is in the sky, remember?) - or how far away you get...God is still with you.

The moral of Jonah, everyone.
